I LOVED YOUR POST!! the transformation from a middle class family with distinctive characters to a MAD house is evident.
to me, archu's character is the one with a drastic change, so i am gonna put my two cents worth:
archu's transformation started when she HID manju's kartoot that caused sachin's death. anyone remember her bhashan when she was to marry satish? "mere maan mein sirf manav hai", there itself her furstration was showing and she was cracking, when she fell for manav, she fell HARD.
then, i saw that she was one CONFUSED woman, didnt know which way to lead her life TRAPPED in the makings of her own decisions that lead to the divorce.
till then i sort of enjoyed her character, she was walking from her cocoon.
but after the divorce; ervything else went downhill for me: her backless blouses irked me (i thought what a tease), then her OBVIOUS partiality to manav,and her CONFUSION, her inablity to control herself infront of manav. it takes two to tango, and that woman enouraged manav. for example; when he was injured in a fight, she helped him, declared herself his wife, slept on his arm (in his house at that).
again, she was confused but now mixed with the tempation of the forbidden. VERY dangerous. it was very clear, she wanted to fling herself on manav and never let go but her mind knew they were divorced and he promised to another.
i agree with you in that, archu was ITCHING to RUN. satish was JUST an excuse. if an orphan told her to RUN, she would taken that as "bappa" message and RAN. in that way, i liked manav better, he didnt leave shravani till she came forth to do so.
but in my opnion, that was one of the biggest FLAWS of archu.
1) she shouldnt have divorced manav, gave false hopes to shravani, only to RUN
2) she should have shown half her NEUROTICNESS, in discouraging jay and being firm with her parents.
3) convinced her parents of Jay's kartoot, then she would have a leg to stand on, for not going through with the marriage
4) or just GOT MARRIED to JAY.
post marriage, her manav craze INCREASED ( i thought it would level offf, but no), she was willing to KILL herself for his pride and go through proverty willingly through her SICK health. but why couldnt she go to the ones like ajit, satish who would help them? is thre any mahanta in dying for pride? seem familiar: yes, she went through divorce for manav's Vaada. what BS
she became a YES-WOMAN to alll of manav's decisions whether right or wrong.
she forgot about sachu, whose mother she left high and dry.
she was JUST A WIFE, a NEWLY wed, who loved ONLY her husband, anything else, or anyone else is NOT important, or simply came 2nd.
beyond this, archoo has become neurotic and crazy.
varsha: has always been self-centred, never expected anything out of her. atleast her character is the same. does mistakes first and repents later. LEFT the house in anger, came back crying. ABORTED the baby in anger, came back crying. she has always been let loose by archu, and by turn her aai. mano, thought her daughter to be differnt, never thought to control her. RESULT: varsha.
vaishoo: she was the one,who neever had any worldly experiences: not like archu, with responsiblites, nor like varsha, a rebel and experienced in the ways of the world. she symbolised the colour white ( not for purity, but just, untouched). then comes dharmu, and after their sham courtship, and then marriage, she wanted to please him, and became like him. just how white mixes with other colours and becomes just like it.
