Ek Ladki... to replace Jassi Jaissi...
By: Chaitanya Padukone
November 14, 2005
She has been wooing telly-audiences with her endearing screen presence in a dozen ads, including Santro cars, Sangini diamond jewellery, Johnson soap, Clearasil, and Wheel detergent — where Gaurav 'Nandu' Gera is her co-star.
Not content with modelling, Kanchi Kaul now appears in a television show, Ek Ladki Anjaani Si — a daily serial to be aired on Sony, from Nov 21.
Channel sources say the serial has been allocated the premium Jassi slot, which will result in Jassi shifting to another late evening slot (which will be decided by the channel on Wednesday).
But showbiz is not alien to Kaul, who debuted with the period film, Woh Tera Naam Tha, directed by Kuku Kohli and produced by business magnate, Vijaypat Singhania.
In an exclusive to hitList, Kanchi Kaul speaks about the pressures of winning over viewers hooked to Jassi with her character, Ananya .
Why did you choose to be a one-film wonder?
"I was game for more Hindi films after Woh Tera Naam Tha, but somehow, I was not excited with the offers which came to me. Either they were multi-heroine set-ups or the sleazy types.
Since I was already busy with prestigious modelling assignments, I did not want to grab mediocre stuff. Meanwhile, I was offered very good movies down south; I have acted in half-a-dozen Telugu films, of which three are superhits. There came a time when I became homesick and returned to Mumbai.
Do you feel you should have waited for a better Hindi film debut?
It's no use crying over spilt milk. When we heard the original story of WTNT, it was quite different from the final product. But I guess it was a fabulous learning experience working under Kuku Kohli. Although WTNT was a fiasco, it did boost my career to a certain extent. Besides, it was the first film project from the esteemed Singhania business family.
What was it that made you plunge into television?
Thanks to my modelling, I was being offered dozens of TV serials. But I was not thrilled about doing the usual saas-bahu genre. So when Prime Channel approached me for the author-backed title role of Ananya, I instantly accepted. It's a different kind of love-story, adapted from the immensely popular Spanish TV serial, Juana Le Virgin. It is directed by Ashish Patil, who was also associated with Kyunki and Jassi.
Why would audiences want to switch over to an "anjani ladki"?
Let the telecast begin, and you will know why. The anjani aspect is from the hero's perception of this 18-year-old college girl. My character drives a motorbike, plays basketball and has a devil-may-care attitude. But she has her set of values and is a peppy blend of the modern and the traditional.
They have cast Shakti Anand as the romantic lead opposite me. After every episode, viewers will be craving to know aagey kya hoga.
Stepping into the famous Jassi slot — isn't that a challenge?
In fact it's a compliment, that our serial has been considered worthy of it. Since Ek Ladki… is unique in its own way, we are sure of appealing to audiences with its content, characterisations and slick treatment. Maybe I should say anjani Ananya jaisi koi nahin!
