Akshara's Column: Financial crisis in the family

Hi friends, the week began on a good note with Naitik and me celebrating a perfect Valentine's Day. I was glad he loved my surprise and even appreciated the effort I had put in to make the evening memorable.

However, the rest of the week was filled with tension as there was a business problem for which Naitik held himself responsible. The family was in urgent need of money and I suggested that Bauji could lend us the same. He could help us in this hour of need. Dadaji refused to consider my idea and I felt hurt. I believe that times have changed, today in-laws shouldn't feel embarrassed to seek help from their daughter-in-law's family when in urgent need. After all, one only asks the closest relatives for help in times of crisis.

The women in the house were very excited after Shankaritai informed us about a prospective groom for Rashmi. Dadaji entrusted me with the responsibility to ensure no one finds out about our family's financial crisis. It will be really difficult for me to hide the tension, pretend to be happy and join the preparations at home but I cannot let Dadaji down, so I am putting in my best effort. Even though I am worried I am trying to do everything I can and preparing for the prospective groom's visit.

I hope that none of you have to go through such tough times and here are my suggestions for financial planning for young couples that may be useful:

Try to control your expenditure and stick to a certain budget every month. Learn to save some money every month and invest diligently.

Do not always use Credit Card. Try and use cash instead of your credit card wherever possible. This way you can keep tabs on your expenditure as most people who use credit card are later shocked to see huge bills.

Last week I had told you all that it is necessary to keep the romance alive by planning surprises for your partner. However, you don't need to buy expensive gifts to impress him/her. Watching a movie together at home or a handmade card or maybe collection of photographs of special moments spent together would be perfect too.

Entertainment plays an important role in today's times. But it's not wise to spend thousands of rupees every month on it as the same money can be used for a better purpose. Try and avoid going at multiplexes which charge a bomb for tickets and food. Or try to catch a morning or afternoon show.

Do not hesitate to seek advice from elders in the family regarding money issues whenever necessary. They are more experienced in such matters and will have valuable advice to offer.

Be supportive towards your partner and make sure not to discourage him/her in hour of crisis or when they attempt to save money.

These are few suggestions and I know that you all are my well wishers so any advice from you is always welcome.
