CHAPTER 5
In Rajkot the search was on and in Mumbai Gopi was getting educated as well as she was getting the polish on becoming worldly wise. After the first week, Gopi started working in Dhawal's office, to know how to deal with different kind of people and was becoming stronger every day. And Dhawal being a fair employer paid her wages as per her caliber and performance. But she didn't want Ahem to accept her just because she was strong or she was educated. She wanted Ahem to like her for herself, an uneducated, simple and nave girl. Though it had been a couple of weeks but she didn't want to go to Modi Family.
Sometimes Kinjal used to call Koki to ask forgiveness but Kokila keeps ignoring her. At such times Kinjal finds solace in gentleness of Gopi, who is willing to do everything in her power to help her.
A month has passed like this and it is Holi, the festival of colours. Modi's are planning to call Kinjal and Dhawal for Holi celebrations, since it was Kinjal's first Holi as a married women. At first Kokila tries to find some excuse to keep Kinjal in Mumbai itself. But at insistence of everyone and also because it is tradition, Kokila finally relents. Baa asks Kokila to call Kinjal and invite her and Jamai babu to celebrate Holi at Kinjal's Maiyka . All but reluctantly, Koki calls Kinjal and invites her, but refuses to talk to her regarding her previous behavior.
Now Kinjal was in a dilemma as to what to do.
Kinjal wonders - Would it be good to go with Dhawal to gauge the situation as to how Gopi's absence has affected the whole family or to take Gopi along with me? Wouldn't it be good not to inform Gopi, what if nothing has changed there and everyone is ready to exploit Gopi again? How to put this in front of Gopi?
But Kinjal trusted Gopi to make a good decision about her stand, so she put forth her doubts. Kinjal also told Gopi about Ahem's call, which she had received as soon as they reached Mumbai.
Gopi – Kinjal ben. With both your and Dhawal Bhai's guidance I am becoming into a different person, the like of whom Ahemji prefers. But I want him to accept me as I am. Also, I am not yet ready to face the family. I may have got a bit confident, but that much is not enough to face the family. I guess it would be good if you and Dhawal Bhai go together.
Kinjal – Theek Che Gopi Bhabhi. Whatever you feel is good we will do. But in that case, I have a few preparations to do.
Gopi – Like what?
Kinjal – to get you a cell phone and make sure you don't have any trouble and in my cell phone I'll feed your name as Anamika, so no one gets suspicious at home and you can still speak to me if you have any trouble. Till today you insisted that it is not necessary, but I believe it is necessary now. So, please don't say no.
Gopi (Smiling) – Whatever you believe is good, let us go with it.
Kinjal – Ok then, while we are in Rajkot, Sandhya will help you make small decisions for the restaurant. And you can always call us for any suggestions.
Gopi – But Kinjal Ben, I still can't understand legal terms.
Kinjal – That is why Sandhya will help you. She is trustworthy and both of you go as house on fire. You are becoming more of her friend than mine, Bhabhi. I am getting jealous.
Gopi can't bear the pouting face of Kinjal and bursts into peals of laughter.
Gopi – But Kinjal ben. Where do you have the time for me? You just keep thinking of your Dhawalji.
Kinjal – I do not.
Gopi – you do too
They share a light bantering session and later go ahead to finish off the rest of the tasks, so they can go shopping for Holi. Kinjal makes arrangements for a dinner party for just them three, so Gopi doesn't miss Holi much. Kinjal also buys a beautiful, peach coloured satin lehenga choli with Gold and silver embroidery for Gopi as a gift. She also buys Ferozi colour (I guess its teal in English) Sherwani for Dhawal. Gopi buys Kinjal a beautiful Red Sari with full work on print. Gopi also Gifts Dhawal a Sherwani, which is combination of Gold and Buiscuit color. Dhawal does something totally different. He buys both of then a Gold Necklace each. After that they shop for gifts for the whole of the family.
Back in Rajkot, though everyone was still worried about Gopi, they were also excited about Kinjal and Dhawal's visit. Preparations are being done and Koki as usual is running Mani ragged with her instructions for the event.
The day of Kinjal and Dhawal's arrival has come and Ahem and Jigar go to pick them from the Railway station. Modi's want them to stay at Modi Mansion so Urmi can't pull the strings and create new problems. But Dhawal atleast wants to meet his Phui once. So Koki decides to tell him what Urmi and Rashi were doing all along. Dhawal is totally shocked. Though he knew his Phui was no good, but he didn't expect her to be so unscrupulous in spoiling someone's life and that too, of her own niece..
Though Dhawal did go and listen to prattle of Urmi and her bad mouthing Modi's since they sent back her daughter and divorce proceedings are all but final. He didn't stay there long and was back to help his wife at her house.
At Modi house, everyone was very happy to have Kinjal and Dhawal home. But Kinjal was not unaware of the tensions and undercurrents in the family because of Gopi's disappearance. But what could she do when Gopi wanted to stay away from the eyes of Modi's. But she could do one thing and that was owning up to her mistakes. One day when the whole family was in the drawing room
Kinjal – Maa, I have to say something.
Koki – If you want to talk about your mistakes, then don't say anything.
Kinjal – No Maa. You already told me not to bring that up and so I won't.
Koki – Then what is there that you want to tell us.
Kinjal – It is about Gopi Bhabhi.
Ahem – Gopi??? Did you see her somewhere? Did you see her in Rajkot?
By now everyone knew that though Ahem might still be in denial of his love for Gopi, but he cared for her immensely and was truly worried for her. Kinjal doesn't know what to say. How to get her Ahem Bhai off her case? She didn't want to lie anymore to her family, but she can't betray her Gopi Bhabhi too. Dhawal is looking at her as if to warn her to think before speaking anything and not to give Gopi away. Kinjal decides to be evasive.
Kinjal – It is not about that Bhai. I wanted to talk about what you all thought of Gopi Bhabhi. Before I loose my nerve, don't interrupt me and let me complete. Gopi Bhabhi was never a Gold digger. The Necklace that was ordered in Bhabhi's name was done by me.
Koki – Kinjalllllll…. How could you?
Koki – I didn't want Ahem Bhai to suffer without his love and thought if everybody thought bhabhi to be money-minded they will get rid of her. If I did some things wrong, I am also guilty of knowingly ignoring other autocracies done to her.
Koki – What else was done to her?
Kinjal – Rashi did the other things. Like cooker incident, did you all ever think how a girl who has been cooking since she was very young, forgot to put water in the cooker??? Because she didn't forget, Rashi opened the cooker and threw all the water away. I saw her doing that, but since what she was kind of doing was kind of helping me, I kept quiet. There are many other incidents. The only mistake of Bhabhi was to believe Urmi Kaaki and Rashi Bhabhi.
Hetal – Hey Kanhaji. How can a sister do that to her other sister? How could Rashi do this? Didn't she understand that others could get hurt too.
Koki – Now you know Mota Bhabhi, why I was always after Rashi and not Gopi?
It was the day of their return to Mumbai, and since they both had resolved their issues, Modi's wanted to visit them in Mumbai and see their daughters home. Kinjal was stuck speechless, as to what to do and looks at Dhawal for help, who is as much in a soup as herself.
Kinjal – Maa, our house is but small, how will you all manage?
Koki – Why are you worried? We will stay in a hotel and just come to visit.
Kinjal couldn't say anything to this.
Kinjal – Theek Che Maa. Let us know when you are planning on the trip. So we can take vacation and delegate out job to others in the restaurant, so we can spend the whole time with you.
Jigar – Hey, we will come there, but it might be a business trip as well. We will let you know whichever plan works for all.
Kinjal smiles and nods. They take their leave and go back to Mumbai. They have to figure out what to do if the family comes to Mumbai as well.
Dhawal – Why do you worry Kinjal. We will figure out something when they plan to come to Mumbai.
Kinjal – We might not be able to solve it on moment's notice. I would rather be ready for such a situation, than wait for the bridge to cross it. Atleast we will be assured that we are doing our best.
Kinjal looks with hopeful eyes towards Dhawal and Dhawal sees the logic and says that they will do as she says.
Urmila is not too happy that even Dhawal has refused to acknowledge her. She fumes mad at everyone who comes in front of her. Seeing this even Rashi started avoiding her.
Urmi – What will I do with this Girl. I found her a house which was rich beyond imagination and this girl doesn't even know how to do 1% of Kalakari's I do, even remotely well. Let alone being perfect in them. I even got that gawar out of the house, so this girl could rule there. But she had to get caught. What use is this kind of a daughter who can't fulfill her mother's wishes. Now I have to start searching for another party soon, who would be my in-laws. How will I do shopping and go to Spa without money…
Rashi is hearing this ongoing prattle of Urmi and is upset that her mother just sees her as a commodity to barter. She thinks of Modi family, about her mother-in-law who always supported her whatever she might have done. Who never asked for anything in return and bought her more things than her mother ever had. What if her mother-in-law had simple tastes and not so showy as Koki Kaaki. Atleast she loves me more than Koki Kaaki loves her vahu. Even Jigarji used to love me till he thought me a good person, though I broke his marriage. But what could she do now. The train had already left the station and the flight has already taken off. She thinks of owning up to her mistakes and begging for forgiveness from Modi family. But how will she achieve that? She is worried but has the assurance that where there is will, there sure will be a way.
