Hello everyone
I was encouraged by the response to my write up on the gala so heres my take on the April 11th show:
In my opinion this show is a sort of space filler between shows. The contestants sang old songs so in terms of garnering new votes, this show does nothing. I mean is it not obvious that the people from the contestants hometowns will vote for them? It sort of reminds me of the last US elections where the candidates appealed to and strengthened their bases rather than reaching out to swing voters and new voters.
Sandeep fans welcomed him with the sort of hysteria common to younger fans whereas Karunya was welcomed with a quiter respect indicative of older supporters.
Karunya had the mayor welcome him which is another honor this youngster notched up. The mayor seemed impressed with him and said afew words about him in telegu-english which I found really endearing. He said " There is a boy from hyderabad and he is singing hindi songs so well so (in telegu) the all you people must vote for him.I would really like to see him as the number one." Like karunya mentioned he did indeed look like a budding politician especially with his garland and the autocade!! (i personally feel he speaks well enoough to be one...alternate career path, anyone?! 😊 ) He went on to pay his repects to one of the carnatic musics greats, tyagayya. It was nice to see him repeatedly acknowledge his musical influences. I was really surprised by the scale of the events going on. There were firecrackers, masses of people, huge banners and real (almost political) campaigns. Karunya sounded genuinely overwhelmed by the going ons. He met his grandmother who sounded really proud as she said she couldnt believe Karunya would become such a successful and well known man. His family seems really close-knit. And then there was the out-of-place endorsement of pizza hut thrown into all this ...lol.
Next we move on to Bikaner. There are a lot of people lined up sending SMS' for Sandeep. One of them said that "Hum chahthe hain ki humare Bikaner ki garv badhe!" It was touching how much support these people showed him but I do feel thats exactly the wrong reason to send SMS votes. He should have at least mentioned something about Sandeeps talent...never mind that.... Again we see the campaigning this time with guys in megaphones in vans. Their chant went "Indian Idol kaisa ho? Sandeep Acharya jaise ho!!" Not very original but it got the message across. Again I taken aback by how many people turned out. Sandeep too seemed taken back and touched by the support he got.
The only thing in my mind was productivity in Bikaner must have just plummetted coz there were so many people just out on the streets chanting....hehehe....What about work, people?!!
Sandeep had what looked like a really fun camel ride and then the masses of people just lifted him off the camel and carried him through. I dont think his feet touched the ground. His shirt was torn in the process. I dont think he cared...he was too excited and was probably on an adrenaline high.
Next we see Karunya meeting his mom. He held her so tight, he suddenly seemed like the young boy he is. I think after a long time I realized he was just 19. He talked about being best friends with his sister (i dont know about that!!lol...i have a sister too). His dad talked about missing listening to his early morning riyaaz. These people are seriously like the Brady Bunch....so much love and pride in those four walls.
Sandeep also had an emotional reunion with his family. He teared up just describing it as he laid his head on him mom's shoulder. His dad teared up too. And then his mom fed him his home food (now I'm jealous...i think most of us know how it feels not to have eatens mom's food in a while). His family seemed very traditional. The cute part was he fed his mom back.
His grandfather sounded proud of him too. His dad admitted being wrong for discouraging him from music. 😊
Both these guys seemd very religious.Sandeep missed his mandir and Karunya had a havan at home.
Oh and now we have some other product plug-in. This time for nokia. They really know how to place these in show ads!
Karunya met the CM (!!) and Nagarjuna(!!!!!). I really like how nagarjuna said that if you listen to Karunya and like the way he sounds, make sure you send in your votes for him. Lets make him win!...very nice to see such a big star make time to promote a contestant.
Back in Bikaner, they showed two teams (one guys and one girls) who are from Sandeep's "mahula" and their job is simply to send in votes day and night!! No wonder he had the most votes in the last gala!!
Anyway this goes on and on. Karunya meets his guru, his school and some media. Sandeep meets a big businessman in the sweets business and tons of fans. I really dont want to get into too many details coz its honestly the same kind of talk repeatedly. I mean everyone basically appealing for votes. I was a little diappointed that there was so little singing.
Sandeep sang bijuria and jawani phir na aaye. It sounded like he was singing over the original in the jawani song. The crowd in front of him was really really big!
Karunya sang Kawa, kawa. And frankly it sounded better than the gala version. He looked like he was really loose, relaxed and having a good time. His crowd was definitely smaller than Sandeeps though.
And that was todays show....yeah I know kinda lame, but dont blame my writing. I just told it like I saw it! 😃
