What was so special about Sridevi's appeal?

😕 I know Sridevi was a top actress of her times, but I fail to see the magic in her acting and appeal. I watched parts of Lamhe today (a classic movie from 20 years ago) and it looks very tacky when you watch it now. I did not find her acting that great. If Madhuri Dixit had been in that role, it would have been so much better. Anyway, what's done is done. Sridevi had a lot of hits and great performances. But, the main question is, did you find her sexy and appealing? Her voice is a major turn-off for me. 😆 Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi were major competitors during the late 80's/early 90's. Personally for me, I always loved Madhuri more and she was much better in terms of her sex appeal, smile, acting, and everything else. Sridevi faded out simply because Madhuri had the magic which everyone loved at that time.
I don't really want to turn this into a Madhuri vs. Sridevi comparison topic. However, I would like to know. What was so special about Sridevi's appeal? Her acting, choice of roles, voice? What did you like about her?

I love both madhuri and sridevi, they're both awesome in their own way. sridevi had spunk and spark, she was human personification of energy and vibe. some of her films figure in my all time favs specially chaalbaaz and laadla.

madhuri was poetry in motion. she was feminine, elegant and had a screen presence stronger than all heroes put together. you could have amitabh and govinda dancing along with her in the same frame and yet you would only look at her. I loved some of her off beat films like mritryudand and anjaam. her little cameo in lajja was very powerful too.

personally I prefer madhuri over sridevi but only by a tiny margin. they both rock 😃

p.s - I haven't seen lamhe so I can't really comment on the actual topic. hah.

well I don't like overrated actress or actors. If I came to IF first and saw sridevi's movie than I would've never been a fan of hers. Thank God, I saw Sridevi's movies first...lol I'm a huge fan of dancers and I loved her dancing songs. She's really a good actress also. I thought she was too good in the snake movie, she moved her body like a snake...lol became a huge fan of hers after that movie

Sridevi was an amazing dancer who had a lot of energy..her comic timing was pretty good..and like CZ said she had a lot of spunk. The only thing that was very annoying about her was her squeaky high voice, but if you got past that, then it was a pleasure to watch her onscreen.
Madhuri toh is a totally different story! Madhuri is more from my time..I grew up watching her and I totally adore her. She was a brilliant dancer, a good actress..I can go on and on..😆
I never really considered Sridevi and Madhuri to be competitors to be honest. Madhuri ruled the late 80's and 90's. Sridevi ruled the 80's. I consider them to be like Rani and Kareena..Kareena's at the peak now. Rani's peak was 2000ish-2005.

again a nice topic for discussion erotic.... 😊

Coming to the topic... Why just Lamhe.... most of teh movies of those times if watched now we will find it tacky... the other day I was watching Maine pyar kiya... and i fast forwarded it... could not sit thru it... and it was my most fav movie once upon a time...
I think there are very few movies that can stand the test of time and be evergreen to watch....
Coming to Sridevi and Madhuri... they were never competitors... Sri's peak was in the mid to late 80's and Madhuri's was in the early to mid 90's....
Both were amazing actresses... since i grew up watching Madhuri... I prefer her...but definitely Sridevi had a massive fan following in those times... and unlike today those were the times when there was just a monopoly of one actress at a certain time with absolutely no competion... so definitely madhuri and Sridevi benifitted because of that too..

It's strange how I like neither of them when I was growing up..I was a big fan of Juhi Chawla and continued to remain so...

But I watched Madhuri in Devdas and Mrityudand and she blew me away...She was absolute poetry in Devdas. She played Chandramukhi to the perfection and can feel the pain she was going through. Mitryudand is another powerful movie of hers where the dance queen steps back and her acting was on display..This is clearly the reason why I love Prakash jha's storytelling...

love lamhe and sridevi's performance in it but the way she speaks hindi is really annoying.kinda took away the charm from some of her performances but her expressions are spot on.loved sri's telugu films always though.she's such a delight.

Oh, No You Didn't!
That has to be the first time I've come across someone who doesn't like Lamhe because of it's "tackiness" or because of Sridevi. How she pulled off a double role of characters who are the inverse of each other was amazing especially since one character did not creep into the other one, for me at least. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
I adore Madhuri like no one's business but I still think she's a weaker actress than Sridevi or Juhi. Don't get me wrong, she's got amazing screen presence but her acting talent has always been overshadowed by her dancing. Her song-and-dance routines aside, the only film I can think of that Madhuri was outstanding in was Lajja or Mrityudand - and I doubt most remember watching this. Sridevi rocked in roles Madhuri wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. Take for instance the year HAHK released. The year Madhuri's candyfloss role (which was in no small part a rehash of Sri's Chandni except Chandni was better by a large mile) was the rage, Sridevi featured in a diametrically opposite role as the wicked anti-heroine in Laadla which was eagerly lapped up. I think that is a testament to the fact that Sridevi was held to a much more diverse standard than other actors.
The best thing about Sridevi for me has always been that even when the movies were awful (e.g. Chaalbaaz for one), she managed to be good. She also played larger-than-life figures for a greater part of her career but the irony is that she is most remembered as Chandni (at least in Hindi cinema) - a simplistic figure - and she pulled it off with such grace and elan that the relatively normal figure became someone more surreal. She was much more versatile - playing a plethora of roles like the insane wife or the vivacious girl in Khudha Gawah (where I thought she overpowerd Amitabh) and acting well. IMO, Sridevi's appeal was a mixture of her acting talent, her looks, her versatility, her dancing and her screen presence. Annd, who can forget her inadvertently funny "dance" videos with Jeetendra (biggest non-dancer EVER!)? They have me in tears of laughter everytime someone decides to pop the DVD in.

SAME here! I didn't dislike them but I wasn't a huge fan or anything! I adored Juhi Chawla though! She's awesome!
However, I think Sridevi has this sorta spunk & elegance at the same time, it's hard to find with actresses
