Kunal lands modelling contract

A menswear brand has signed on Kunal Kapoor of Rang De Basanti fame to endorse its range of products in an exclusive two-year contract.

The deal, which starts from this season, will see Kunal featuring in Indian Terrain's new summer collection campaign, which is be out in the first week of April.

On why they chose Kunal, Charath Narasimhan, COO, expressed, "We believe that Kunal represents this brand philosophy and is also representative of this new Inspired Indian. Kunal and Indian Terrain are a reflection of each other. They are young, not bound by history and rules. They ooze chutzpah and charm…"

Over to the model, who explains why he signed on, "I liked the attitude of the brand — it was refreshing.

This is one brand that has no pretensions, and is proud to call itself Indian. They called me up a month ago and we met over coffee. They described what they were looking for. I liked the way they wanted to project the brand.

Like a lot of other Indian brands, they don't want to mask their Indianness, but instead project it as an Indian brand. It's not because of Rang De Basanti, but I have always been proud to be an Indian without being jingoistic about it. It's just that the time has come today to show that we are proud of who we are…"

As far as the look was concerned, (shot by Kolston Julian) Kunal says, "They decided to leave me the way I was."

The RDB effect

Did this happen because of the Rang De Basanti effect? "I don't know what that sort of effect that is, but I find the reaction of the audience amazing. Some people have watched the film 6 times.

I have been travelling with Rakeysh (Mehra) all over India to the theatres and I have seen people crying and reacting emotionally to the film. Indians settled abroad have been writing to us saying they want to come back to India.

When Rakeysh went to IIT, the students there told him that earlier they wanted to go abroad and earn in dollars, but after seeing RDB, they want to stay back in India and earn in rupees! Can you believe that?"

Kapoor hasn't signed any film after Rang De Basanti but he is going through various scripts and finalising some films. What is he waiting for? "I haven't fixed any limits — if I read a script and I like it, I will do the film. I don't want to restrict myself to any image."

Romancing Raima

On Raima Sen. "It's just natural for people to link up a woman and a man if they are hanging out together. I am very much single and enjoying that fact greatly today. Raima is a wonderful girl and great fun to be with and I am very fond of her. But that's all there is to it."
