New seasons
Makeovers, controversies and star-wars on the small-screen packed a punch this year. Chaya Unnikrishnan gives a lowdown
The small-screen was dominated by fresh servings of old shows. Bigg Boss 4, Fear Factor Khatron Ke Khiladi 3, KBC4 and Swayamvar 2 were some of the reality shows that were revisited, albeit, with different hosts and participants. Then there was Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, which has been an ongoing Zee property for 13 years, Sony's Indian Idol 4, Entertainment Ke Liye Kucch Bhi Karega 3 and MTV Roadies Season 8, to name a few. In what could be a first-of-its-kind, the year also saw a few fiction shows being revived. The most noteworthy was Hum Log, which was repackaged as Hum on Doordarshan. It might be recalled that Hum Log heralded the tradition of soap operas on television in mid '80s. It was best remembered for veteran actor Ashok Kumar summing up the story at the end of every episode in his inimitable style. This time it has Sushma Seth, who was part of the original soap, doing the honours. Imagine TV brought season 2 of Kitani Mohabbat Hai after a year's gap with a fresh storyline and new characters but retained the lead pair Kritrika Kamra and Karan Kundra from season 1. Following this, Zee is planning to bring Chhoti Bahu for a second season too.
