Are actresses a representation of Indian women?

So I couldn't fit the whole title there but what I was really asking was: Are actresses today an accurate representation of normal Indian women?

I've had many people tell me that half our actresses look white and look nothing like the Indian girls we see walking around in real life. Sure, people also say that Aishwarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor are beautiful. But how many regular Indian girls look like them? Priyanka and Bipasha are considered our "dusky" actresses even though I'm pretty sure a large amount of our population is as dark if not darker than them. When actresses like Vidya Balan come around who truly looks Indian, she's labeled as "old world charm". So, do you think Bollywood is biased towards actresses who look westernized and don't fit the mold of the average Indian women?

no, i don't think so... the world of bollywood is all about glitz and glamour... and with all the layers of make-up that goes into play, how can they be representative of the average indian women...! 😛😛
india is quite diverse though... and we have women who are fair, or women who look persian, or women who are darker in complexion... it varies... so really, there isn't exactly a set definition of an 'average indian woman', imo...!

Bollywood is a glamorous world and you should have some unique charm or features to fit in that profession. If we look at old movies from 60's we see many of our heroines were mostly dressed in a sari or salwar but as time passed by we got influenced by a lot of western culture and dresses started getting short... jeans, pant, minis, bikinis stated becoming a fashion in our films.

So, do you think Bollywood is biased towards actresses who look westernized and don't fit the mold of the average Indian women?
Honestly it had nothing to do with western or Indian ......they want people who can shed clothes in front of camera and can appear glamorous
Another point is that now India is so much influenced by western culture that if heroines dress in salwar, have oiled plaited hair everyone will call her a behenji 😆 (remember Vidya)
I do think bollywood prefers heroines who can do both western and Indian looks......in that also I think there is more weight to western because who wears Salwar and Sari that often now? Any movie you take the only occasion that our actors dress traditionally is when is there is festival or pooja...otherwise its usually a jeans or skirt.
Also movie makers want to do a lot of skin show because they think that's what audiance wants to see....so going western is the best option....Even though sari is a s**y outfit there is a limit to what can be shown 😆
Now after reading my rant I am not sure if I answered the question at all 😕 anyways I spend time so will post it 😆
so

😆 You answered it. But so, you think it has more to do with the attire and hairstyles etc. more than the actual features of the actresses? So if the "glamor" quitoient (i.e. the stylish dresses, makeup and hairstyles) was removed from them, they would just look like an average Indian woman (sorry to use that phrase again)?

Nice topic Chatpati...

Before I get to the actress, let me get to the movies and i am talking of the majority of the movies made...
Are movies today an accurate representation of todays times.. NO.. Do they deal with the issues and the problems people face NO.. Do they deal with aam aadmi.. NO.. Do they deal with the roti kapda aur makaan issues.... NO... Do they deal with every other day issues like honor killing and gender discrimination... NO. Do they deal with the screwed up sex ration in Haryana UP ... NO.....
Does the audience want to see such movies ..NO... and again iam talking abt the majority of the audience..
Exactly the same way is there an accurate representation of an Indian woman.. No...
Movies are all about escapism, the glitz, the glamour, the unreal, the make believe... That is what the janta wants.. everyday day in and day out they step out and they can see an average indian women right inside their homes and right on the streets... ..
Why do they again want to see the same Average Indian woman in the movies... ?? Why do they want to see the same issue in movies... ??
So it boils down to what the demand is for and that demand is met by the film makers...
And coming to the looks except maybe Ash who is very beautiful..... the other actrsses look pretty normal, nothing exceptional...
With the amount of resources these guys have and an entourage of people to make them look good and the tons of money they spend on themselves and the plastic surgeon... with those resources any of us can look fab too.. all we need then is a famous last name or a good PR or a beauty pageant crown...

India itself is a huge country with a population exceeding the billion mark. I doubt that a handful of actresses can ever represent a country as vast as India, not only in terms of size or population, but also different cultures, ethnic groups, etc.

I also find most actresses (same goes for the actors) very average looking, though they do have a certain charm of their own.
