KANK was a designer take on designer infidelity by designer people in designer land!
Nothing about that movie spelt realistic or right! Karan Johar, who is yet to grasp the nuances of showing relationships with depth and insightfulness in his films, obviously cannot be expected to grasp the seriousness of something like Infidelity in a relationship! God knows what he was thinking while making the film! Or maybe, he was trying to give some kind of a hidden message to Gauri Khan!
HDDCS had absolutely nothing to do with infidelity, in either theme or treatment! It was primarily another designer love story with a regional twist between three people and lots of flying curtains! Atleast, I failed to see any infidelity or anything serious in the film! But it was nevertheless a very entertaining movie, with amazing music, good performances and great production values!
Silsila did a fairly good job of showcasing this sensitive subject! What I like best about this film is that both Amit and Chandni (the errant lovers) are so unapologetic about their relationship yet deal with personal bouts of extreme guilt on behalf of their all-knowing spouses! (Credit should also be given to Paa, Maa and Sauten for their real-life inter-personal dynamics which somehow seemed to translate on-screen too!)
Another great film on infidelity is Ijaazat! Wonderful music and some knock-out performances by Nasser, Rekha and Anuradha Patel! The tensions between the Husband / Wife, the Husband / Mistress and the Wife / Mistress is shown with great dignity and restraint.
Another one is Mahesh Bhatt's Arth! An emotionally heartwrenching, complex story, where as an audience, one can relate completely with all the three protogonists (the victimized wife, the culprit husband and the in-between mistress) and be left wondering whom to feel most sorry for!
And ofcourse, Shekhar Kapoor's classic film, Masoom is probably the best film on the effects of infidelity on what was otherwise a perfect marriage / relationship! You just have to see Shabana's reaction on learning that her husband betrayed on her...the anguish, the denial, the complete lack of belief...beautifully portrayed! And so was Naseer's guilty yet helpless husband, caught between the infidelity of his past and the love he has for his wife! (And I so loved Jugal Hansraj in the film! Such a cutie!!!)
Apart from the ones, I mentioned, there are a couple more which deal with the subject of Infideltiy in the most modest way possible, keeping in mind, our society and general audience sentiments, yet with a lot of honesty and insightfullness!
Otherwise, most hindi movies veer between sickeningly sweet sentimentalism or puke inducing vulgarity when it comes to show a subject like Infidelity in a marraige or relationship! Either you will have a woman sleeping with her lover and then crying buckets wandering aimlessly in the biting cold wearing designer coats (Rani Mukherjee in KANK) or you will have a voluptuous Mallika Sherawat turning every young woman off sex after having endless romps in the bed with her equally cringe-inducing lover! (As in Murder)
Oh, btw! A good topic!😊
