Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna : flop
>>I cannot understand this movie at all
I feel strongly against infidelity and although I am not sure what KJo was trying to put out there but it rubbed up against ppl the wrong way
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam : hit
>>Loved this movie to bits, mostly because although I am a die hard romantic, I am also very practical and would give second chances to love. I like how this movie for once focused on love and marriage on equal terms..it was not biased but rather showed something so beautiful and came out respecting both relationsihps
Kabhi Kabhi : hit
>>Great movie + great songs! It was(is?) very common back then for the girl/guy to give up their love for family matters... this movie showed that although the girl had moved on the man even moving on was still not content with his wife as he loved his former so much. At the end it was nicely shown how he finally did get to moving on and best part was that the girl's husband wasn't the jealous type but rather very understanding!
Silsila : hit
>>I am not sure what to make of this movie.. Agreed that one time two people were madly in love but circumstances led them apart. When fate brings them together, they're both married.. but then carry off their relationship and keep it away from their partners. After a bunch of twists and turns they decide to run away together but then at the climax decide that isn't right and should return to their respective partners
--------------------------
I love bollywood because it looks down upon infidelity (for the most part) but I hate how tv dramas thrive off of it and try to glamourize it.
Alot of the times these movies work because there is an underlying message and gives hope to all the 2nd chancers. Not only that but it strays away from the typical boy meets girl shaadi movies (i love those as well lol).
Which movie do you think fairly portrays both sides well?

Is it an article or did you write it up?

Anyway, coming to your topic, extramarital affairs happen in real life, so I don't mind Bollywood or Hollywood or any other film industry depicting infidelity as long as they do not go out of their way to glorify it. But Bollywood filmmakers need to take a crash course regarding how to portray it properly without going overboard though. From the movies you mentioned, I have only seen the first two. With regards to KANK, I don't think the film was necessarily supporting infidelity. I personally thought it was a bold attempt by KJo and had an interesting concept, but the way KJo handled such a serious issue killed it for me. The execution and presentation of the idea was flawed in almost all respect. What is HDDCS doing here? As for real life, without knowing the full circumstance, one should not pass judgments. But that said, infidelity is infidelity, and there is no justification of it whatsoever.

Silsila was a flop, if I recall correctly. I didn't really like the last 20-30 minutes of the movie because despite being tense and believeable, the resolution was contrived. I think Yash Chopra was afraid of showing protagonists indulging in adultery and copped out (showing the prior romance and creating "dire circumstances" that led Jaya's character to marry AB's when she could have just had an abortion instead). I did like the non-judgmental stance on pre-marital pregnancy though.

IMO, the 80s had a bunch of good films about infidelity such as Arth and Masoom (both of them have Shabana Azmi). I liked Arth a lot because it was Pooja's story. How she picks up the pieces and then has enough sense and self-respect - unlike Jaya/Sanjeev's character in Silsila - to slam the door on her cheating ex-husband's face was brilliant. Masoom was amazing, too. Shabana's constant struggle between affection and indifference (really, suburban wives could teach a lot of people the poker face) was shown very well.
KANK was... interesting. Despite the acting by SRK & Rani (which I thought was below par), I could understand why they'd feel attracted to each other - Dev because of his ego issues and Maya because she is one of those who don't appreciate what they have until it's gone. What irked me was the two guilty parties riding off into the sunset together... but maybe that was the point and I'm missing it? I don't even know.
It's not really surprising some TV shows glamourize adultery. FFS, some TV shows glamourize domestic abuse so adultery invokes a lot less rage from me.

@phoenix: i write it up to get an opinion... hddcs wasn't necessary outright infidelity but she did for a long bit in the beginning of the marriage hold out for sameer and still hoped to be with him

@shadow: thanks for letting me knwo the status of silsila..i googled it and wrote what it had mentioned of it being a hit..i am not sure if it was purely due to the content or b/c of the offscreen drama... yes the movie at the end did seem like a cop out... it did feel like yash chopra couldn't decide and then flipped a coin at the end 🤔

I despise KANK, the story itself..I refused to accept. I am very pakka when it comes to responsibility and practicality and this movie just threw me off.😆 I hated what he tried to show.

HDDCS, I loved. Not only because of the steps taken by her character but also because they did not make Ajay's character seem like he was in any way forcing her to do what she did. All of the characters were shown beautifully, and their relationships as well. (:

the others, I've never watched.

nice write-ups!

I think we have enough freaking taboos in our industry and culture. Don't show pre-marital sex. Don't show infidelity. Don't show bikinis unless it's to titillate the audience. Enough already.

Infidely happens so yes, I think it should be portrayed in our films. Whatever way they want to portray it, I don't really care. Personally, I would never stay with a guy if he was unfaithful. But I rarely watch films for a moral message. If the film makes an interesting argument, or is able to show me a different point of view, then I'd love to watch it whether it's about sex, drugs or alcohol.

For the record, KANK was absolute crap. Not because of the message. Because of the treatment.

Coming to the topic.... KANK as it was the first time KJo was stepping out of his usual comfort zone and attempting a bold topic... and he surely handled it very well...emotionally and realistically. HDDCS... SLB handled the subject very well.. I wouldn't say it was infidelity completely.... more in between cross roads. I haven't seen the rest of the other movies soo can't really comment. Btw really fab topic🤗
