So this topic kind of emerged out of sweet coco's topic on whether Katrina should be nominated for her role in Rajneeti. Mods, I felt that this topic could be a topic on its own and that's why I created a new thread for it. However if you feel it can be combined with the other thread, then you may chose to close this one.

Anyways my question is are awards and nominations really important? Does getting nominated or winning the award really do much for anyone other than giving them recognition for their work?

My take:
Awards are just for pure entertainment. Being nominated and winning does not really prove anything. You only gain recognition for your work. It isn't necessary for someone to win an award to prove that they were amazing! I'm sure Katrina was appreciated for her work in Rajneeti during that time. And she def was recognized. She doesn't need an award to prove that she was good! Same goes to every other actor, actress, etc. I'm highly split when it comes to awards. I think its a nice way to recognize talent, but at the same time I feel that all the stars have been working so hard with their films (regardless if the movies were hits or flops). They ALL need to be recognized. Not just a particular set of 5 or 6. But now that our world has started to really accept all these award functions and stuff nothing will be changed. Someone not being nominated for a category doesn't mean that their work was not appreciated! Neither is being nominated showing encouragement to the stars. You shouldn't be relying on awards to boost up your confidence level anyways. If you get yourself into this industry you should know what you're going to face. Some people are going to love you while others simply are not! If you love acting then you should keep doing what you love without worrying about one award! Awards seldom hold any meaning if you are passionate, dedicated, and committed to your work. I mean aren't you in the industry because of your pure love and talent for acting, singing, or whatever it may be?! If a movie has done very well at the box office you should be proud of yourself and that itself should be boosting up your confidence level and encouraging you to work harder. NOT SOME STUPID AWARD! And if your film didn't do so well at the box office that shouldn't put you down. You should take that in good stride and challenge your critics and make a huge comeback! The awards are just there for fun and recognizing the talent in the industry, but that doesn't mean if you're not nominated you weren't good enough!

What are your views? Please remember that there will be a difference of opinions on this issue. If you disagree with someone's view, please be respectful to their view and make sure your view is constructive. This thread isn't created to bash other people's opinions. Thanks!

There are several approaches to take these awards. One is the Srk approach, be an unapologetic ass while taking these awards even when you don't deserve them, smile your way through getting awards, create tamasha, entertain people through jibes, dance, host and make a lot of bucks and get extra publicty though them.. Hritik roshan's approch is along the same line... but he doesn't entertain in awards.. but gives emo speeches while watching his family cry khushi ke aanson.. I feel that ranbir kapoor is follwing the foot steps of both Srk and Hritik now a days.
Then there is the Aamir khan approach.. the only award he atends is the oscars.. ignore all the awards.. don't give a damn.. but still get heaps of praises for being the only one who doesn't care about these awards..win ocasionaly also but never turn up to get them.. Abhay deol, Imran hashmi and I see a lot of people getting inspired by this approach.
Then there are the kinds who never win any awards but still attend them.. and perfrom also.. this one includes Salman khan and dharam ji.. i heard the first award dharam ji won was a life time achievement award.. and he gave one of the most hilarious and memorabe speeches ever.. he was half drunk though... but very entertaining..
So all the actors can take any approach.. as for junta.. the awards are getting boring with the editing and same people winning over and over.

If you can buy them, they are dime a dozen. If you can't then too bad, so sad....keep sulking in the corner. Who cares about bollywood awards anyway? They are all idiotic. I don't even understand the logic behind some of the nominations, forget the winners.

Nice topic! Am kind of in between. Awards in bollywood are sometimes good sometimes not. Meaning sometimes stars who deserve the award get it, and sometimes stars who don't deserve it get it. But most of the times, it's the ones that don't deserve it that gets the awards. What annoys me aslo, is that they look at the boxoffice rather than performance.

Pretty much they all follow a very simple pattern. 😆
First the Filmfare Pattern. In the past 5 years, the years SRK/Hrithik are nominated those years ABsr is not nominated.
The years AB sr is nominated the SRK/Hrithik duo is not nominated.
So the years Absr is nominated its just an easy decision for the fimfare guys.
But the complexity comes in the years SRK/Hrithk duo are nominated. Thats when Vineet Jain ( CEO of TOI Group) tosses a coin. Whoever of the two win the toss get the FF award that year. The other one is promised one next yr or he is given a 2 crore check.
Coming to the rest like the Stardust, Star screen, Star whatever awards,
They first send their reps to find out which star is available to do the song and dance routine or to just come and sit and look pretty/handsome and smile at the camera whenver the camera men come in front of them.
Then once they know which star is attending, they start alloting each one of them one award. If the actor is so bad 🤣 that they cannot even give them a best actor/actress award, then they create a new category like entertainer of the year or the star of the year...
Then coming to the snooze fest 🥱 IIFA ( India Internationa Family Awards)
Pretty much everyone is covered right from Paa to Beta to Bahurani. Only Shanuk the dog is left bechara. Might as well give him one. Outstanding Doggie of the yr. 😆
I still dont get it. Why do they go all the way to Macau, London or SriLanka to have the awrds. Might as well have it at Jalsa/Prateeksha. 😛

I am actually very impressed by your answer.. it is the true haal of our awards. The biggest joke was when Amitji and the whole bachchan clan wasn't able to attend their pet awards IIFA this year.. and ash's two ex were there, I am sure the whole bachchan family must be sitting at home grinding their teeth.. 😆 btw was amitji removed from the ambassadorship of IIFA or he wasn't.. agar next time he goes kya mu leke jayengee.. 😆

i use to like the awards when there was only filmfare n zee ones but nowdays every brand is launching their own awards so for me the awards are like whatever since they r never fair these days. barely ppl with talent get it or the famous actors get it all the time. i only watch it for the performances n only some r gud too. overall awards are boring in general ppl who doesn't even act they show up there and smile for the camera looking all pretty. nowdays awards are a publicity campaign for brands like nokia n channels. the anchors are stupid and does cheap jokes which doesn't make any sense. the audience just laughs at anything.

I've noticed that in most cases awards are ONLY given to those people that are able to make it to the award function.

For ex: If an actor is more deserving of the award based on his performance but does not show up to the fuction due to prior commitments or whatever reason, then that particualr award will go to some other actor who has attented the award function.

Now there are exceptions, but that seldom happens!
