Survey on Indian Television Industry-NYU Poly

Hi Folks,

I am a graduate student at NYU-Poly, doing research on the representation of women in Indian television, and am currently looking at the occupation of the female characters shown in the Hindi serials.

I would really appreciate it if people on this list could send me a few brief responses with the names of some of the key characters in this show and the occupation they hold (there can be more than one female character from a single serial) –even the serials which used to be aired in the 90s are welcome. The kinds of details I am looking for are as follows:

Name of the director: Rupali Guha? Or is it Pintoo Guha? Dunno one of them anyway

Name of the female character: Ichha and Tapasya are both protagonists

Actress playing the role: Tina Dutta and Rashami Desai

Her occupation: Housewifes/ Daughters

Any interesting details about her work: Not really its a complex tale😊

(such as is she good at her job, is she ambitious, is her work environment good) Both dont work although Ichha once ran a school at her basti.

Hi! Nice survey. There are actually two main female leads in this serial called Uttaran directed by. The youngest is a girl called Ichha, played by Tina Dutta. She is the typical housewife pativrata Indian lady...she is extremely self sacrificing and cries alot. She is meek and doesnt stand up for herself much. You will see this with quite a few serial heroines.

The other leads name is Tapasya, played by well known actress Rashami Desai. She is a very complex character who will maintain who we might say has a split personality given that she suppresses most of her real feelings ost of the time however she is what we might call the typical daughter of a very rich family. She is beautiful, sophisticated and educated with a love for shopping, used to living in the utmost wealth and luxury and she is also very strong minded, determined and many times arrogant. She can be sweet or she can get sour. But she is extremely persistent and fights till she gets what she wants. Overall a much more dominating and stronger personality than Ichha. You could almost say they are both contrasting protagonists and they share very few qualities.

Her occupation: secretary to hot boss Maan singh khurana

Any interesting details about her work: she is a love interest of her boss. she is just 12th pass but aims to become CEO of the company. she is pregnant by maan's younger brother but she still works hard all the time in office without taking care of her health as she is so ambitious.
