@ Saffy who will, I hope, one day learn to recognize indoctrination: I am a teacher and it is my responsibility to impart the ideas I believe are right and just. My husband is an atheist and has been a wonderfully caring and supportive father. Regardless of what some fundamentalist judge decrees, the idea that atheists are lacking in any of the normal human capabilities or cannot be responsible parents is hardly tenable in this day and age.
Hi Commentator - If accepting a religion is indoctrination, not choosing any is also one.
I believe wat you have written is exactly wat I am pointing out as well.A well educated intellectual judge in a civil court gives a ruling, which seems unfair to those who practice their ways sincerely and in good intention. Those of us who practice our religion with understanding and good intention, feel blanket accusations on it to be unfair as well
I also want to point out that most personal law 'indoctrinated' into many countries constitution stems from religion - whether it is mutual rights in matrimony, divorce, alimony, child custody, inheritance of property for women, sexual rights, you name it,except for gay and lesbian marriage - religion has served up these personal laws hundreds of years ago in far far more deeply savage and patriarchical soceities. There is a well documented case of divorce 1400 yrs ago, where a woman wanted to divorce her husband bcoz she was v beautiful and he was v ugly. The religion ruling permitted her to do that, without any harsh chastisement - to me,it shows the wisdom in regards to why even marriage is an institution of mutual benefit, for a harmonious society
Even a recommendation like the Kamasutra is meant for mutual benefit for the parties concerned,as their individual well being contributes to the society's as well
If just laws exist and enforcement does not,I do not condemn the law.
To see the evolved and ever dynamic contemporary side of it,is my way.
In regards to being a critique as an insider vs being blind to the system itself,I believe the latter would be detrimental in the process evolved for determining a solution to all the social issues around us.
In no way am I deploring an entire value chain, whether religious or atheistic, but merely emphasising that, their failure is in the ignorance and proper practice of it.
I appreciate the concern that urged you to open this thread.I have chosen my faith after ample considerations, and also teach it to kids @school.I naturally feel inclined to defend the good I know, just as you do.
I do not see the need to prolong this much, merely hope that the lessons are learnt both ways.
Thanks,
..Saffy
