there Ganga drowned her sons...she was never once asked why and when she was see said bye bye to a man who was deeply in love with her....so i think religion should be view a bit differently. if anything there are examples where they empower women...i think some times as women we tend to perpetuate the cycle...

They were the eight Vasus ........divine beings , cursed by Brahma to be born in the Mrityuloka....The Earth . They were given an Ushaap ..........that is a remedy to a curse after the anger simmers down ............that either their life wud be very short or they wud acquire great fame . When Ganga married Shantanu , her condition was ...........I shud not be questioned whatever I do . U simply gotta trust me . Shantanu agreed .
He kept quiet till 7 children were drowned [ see his lust for the beautiful woman ] and spoke up when she was going to drown the eighth one . Ganga sighed and then told him why she did it .Then she took the eighth son away , and trained him in excellent warfare and returned him to Shantanu when he finished his schooling . And she never came to Shantanu again .She told Shantany all this was pre ordained . The eighth child , true to the Ushaap , became very famous , Bheeshma .
Shantanu married twice and both the times his queens put conditions before him ......atrocious ones that he listened to . He had a lustful passion for beautiful women . Ganga was a river goddess and Satyavati or Matsyagandha was a fisherwoman . Shantanu has a weakness ..........he could not control his lust . This second wife's father asked Bheeshma to renounce his throne and be a bachelor so as to ensure His daughter's sons became the heirs . A very petty man . Bheeshma listened for the sake of his lovesick father .
This doesn't fit in with our modern day problem Caspie . And No , the members arent that bad that u will get hysterical reactions . 😆😆😆

C, yes it was a bit out of place for me to use that as an example, but in that is what most scriptures are...recollection of stories. I have read the Holy Bible and not the Gita....😆

i am a bit embarrassed, but glad it made you guys laugh....

religion, is used to justify our means sometimes and its all how we perceive it

its time for me to go to bed now. 😃

Kool: There is a reason for emphasizing my education and my qualification in women's studies. I am disturbed by the aggression against "pseudo" intellectuals. Varsha, with a basic degree and a software certificate from some modestly priced suburban computer institute, can hardly be described as - or represents herself as - an intellectual. Your anger appears to be directed at members supporting Varsha in her current difficulties, people who can perhaps make more serious claims to the title of intellectual. In any case, the insistence that women, intellectual or otherwise, should not think about themselves first or stand up for their reproductive rights in the face of family disapproval, and the implication that they become "pseudo"- intellectual if they do so, and must therefore be "punished" (presumably along with those who support them) by being "shown the door" is seriously alarming.
That is something you have erroneously assumed C . I have no way of knowing if the members who support Varsha are 'intellectual' or not . In fact , I have no way of knowing their education , period . If By chance via a pm I do know , I am really not so petty and shallow to use this argument to make digs at them .
I personally left my research half way twice due to personal problems so I don't really think that I am NOT in the intellectual category . Some people have told me that I am in that category . And If I am , why would I blast my own kind just for the heck of it ? No , I side with Macgyver here .......my posts were entirely due to the suppression of MAN that I saw as against the suppression of woman that some saw . I have seen such trapped , haunted men in such marraiges with strong headed wives who intimidate them with intellectual fundas . Not considering your spouse equal enough to be given the basic respect of even knowing that his child will be aborted via a REAL talk at home was very disturbing for me to watch . So what if Varsha is a woman , I found her wrong . I sided with the male .
From suppression of women if we are going to the era of male subjugation in educated circles We are again going on a wrong path is my belief . Coz there r many cases like this I saw in MY life .And then we turn and blame them of shying away from giving commitments and marrying us ! It has become a common joke in English serials that the man does not commit to a woman and the woman has to chase him to get a commitment . He gets jitters on the wedding day . Whenever I see it , I wud feel ...........wEll what can the poor dudes do , times have changed and now they have to put up with a lot of domination .
So u see , its really nothing like the way u construed and inferred at all . Anyways thats all from me . Peace .

@ Saffy who will, I hope, one day learn to recognize indoctrination: I am a teacher and it is my responsibility to impart the ideas I believe are right and just. My husband is an atheist and has been a wonderfully caring and supportive father. Regardless of what some fundamentalist judge decrees, the idea that atheists are lacking in any of the normal human capabilities or cannot be responsible parents is hardly tenable in this day and age.

Hi Commentator - If accepting a religion is indoctrination, not choosing any is also one.
I believe wat you have written is exactly wat I am pointing out as well.A well educated intellectual judge in a civil court gives a ruling, which seems unfair to those who practice their ways sincerely and in good intention. Those of us who practice our religion with understanding and good intention, feel blanket accusations on it to be unfair as well
I also want to point out that most personal law 'indoctrinated' into many countries constitution stems from religion - whether it is mutual rights in matrimony, divorce, alimony, child custody, inheritance of property for women, sexual rights, you name it,except for gay and lesbian marriage - religion has served up these personal laws hundreds of years ago in far far more deeply savage and patriarchical soceities. There is a well documented case of divorce 1400 yrs ago, where a woman wanted to divorce her husband bcoz she was v beautiful and he was v ugly. The religion ruling permitted her to do that, without any harsh chastisement - to me,it shows the wisdom in regards to why even marriage is an institution of mutual benefit, for a harmonious society
Even a recommendation like the Kamasutra is meant for mutual benefit for the parties concerned,as their individual well being contributes to the society's as well
If just laws exist and enforcement does not,I do not condemn the law.
To see the evolved and ever dynamic contemporary side of it,is my way.
In regards to being a critique as an insider vs being blind to the system itself,I believe the latter would be detrimental in the process evolved for determining a solution to all the social issues around us.
In no way am I deploring an entire value chain, whether religious or atheistic, but merely emphasising that, their failure is in the ignorance and proper practice of it.
I appreciate the concern that urged you to open this thread.I have chosen my faith after ample considerations, and also teach it to kids @school.I naturally feel inclined to defend the good I know, just as you do.
I do not see the need to prolong this much, merely hope that the lessons are learnt both ways.
Thanks,
..Saffy
