But your analysis of the SRGMP contestants was very good. I agree with all of it but just a few questions regarding the contestants knowledge of music
1) Who do you think deserved to win the Challenge 2005 (Musically)
2) How important is feeling for a song and which contestant brought about that feeling without getting into over expression?
3) Which contestant went off-key and off sur the most and which contestant was perfect in the sur dept. ?
Thanks again for a great great great post!
Greetings, Madhavi
1) In my humble opinion, I think either Hemachandra or Nihira deserved to win. It is hard because comparing male and female singers is like comparing oranges and apples. I think GS made a bad decision by only have one winner. But having one winner would mean that this show would run twice as long (it ran into 2006!!!) and that means more TRPs and more dinero!
2) Feeling of a song is very important, but it shouldn't be at the expense of sur. If feeling of the song exceeded the value of sur, then Kumar Sanu's judgement of choosing Rajeev because "woh dil se gaya" would happen too often.
Nihira was accused of singing her songs "mechanically" initially, hitting the notes right but not much feel into the song. As she got deeper into the challenge, she got better and better. It takes a great amount of skill to mix feeling and sur accuracy together. It's hard to say who was the best on that. I can say that the one who I felt was the most expressionless in singing throughout the entire challenge was Irfan.
3) If you are looking at Agni Pariksha singers, the one who tend to miss sur often was Rajeev. Swananda, for reason or another, faltered on sur on her last few appearances, which might have lead to her early elimination. I haven't heard Sharib go too far out of tune, except for the start of Kaho Na Kaho.
The best was Hemachandra, as I never heard him miss sur. Nihira was also the best, although I did hear her miss one note, but that was because of the range of the song she had to sing (A.R. Rehman's taan in 'kehna hi kya'). But her singing that part was fantastic though!
