Saif Ali Khan talks about his credibility as a mature actor, his comparison with the other Khans and upcoming film, Agent Vinod
Though a couple of his last movies, Qurban and Love Aaj Kal didn't manage to do well at the box office, actor Saif Ali Khan is unfazed. In the Capital to promote a tea brand and announce the launch of Taj Enlighten Film Society, Saif seemed quite confident of his popularity charts and said he will always remain in demand, whatever be the fate of his movies. "I think I have carved a niche for myself and a saleability factor that any actor requires. I have the ability to roll a project as a producer or a lead actor. But I would still want to work harder and achieve bigger goals that I had set for myself. All I can say is that work is in progress right now," he said.
Comparisons with superstars Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan are not new for the royal scion whose career started taking shape a few years later after he ventured into movies. Saif said that such comparisons and critical comments have never affected him and he is rather happy on the success of his counterparts in Bollywood. "They got work in iconic and more successful films at the beginning of their careers. Aamir's debut movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was a superhit, Salman's Maine Pyar Kiya was also a huge hit and Shah Rukh has done equally good for himself. But I'm happy with the position I'm in. I should not be compared to them as they all are years seniors to me," he observed. The actor is now concentrating on Agent Vinod, his upcoming movie and thinking of making his directorial debut soon.
"I want to make films that reflect our society. Films like Being Cyrus, Parineeta and Omkara interest me a lot. These films truly depict the plight of Indian society and the characters in these are one among us. Cinema has always been considered a mirror to the society so we should concentrate on making films that showcase it honestly," said the actor and further continued, "I don't like the films made in USA as they complicate the characters and don't represent the society at all. In fact, Italian cinema is far better in this regard."
About Agent Vinod, he said, "It is a very basic story. We are working hard on it and trying to take the action and drama to another level. I'm looking forward to work with Prakash Jha."
No matter that the actors in Bollywood prone to get attracted to Hollywood projects and want to be a part of that at least once, but Saif is not the one. "If you have plans of working in Hollywood then you have to make your base there to understand the crux of their way of filmmaking. I need to start from scratch. So, I am quite happy where I am and I would rather concentrate on the ways through which I can improve my acting here," he says.
Born to star parents, the actor sure seems to have inherited the skills of handling stardom. "I idolise my parents. One was a brilliant cricketer, the other a great actor. I have never had any problems in handling stardom and I love being a star," he said.
The conversation seems incomplete without a mention of his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor and Saif seems to have gotten used to answering such queries. "She's a great actor and I'm happy with the way her career is shaping up," he said.
