'Crook' (thankfully) stays away from turning into a serious affair, a la 'My Name Is Khan' which again dealt with racial abuse. Religion was the point of contention in the Shah Rukh Khan drama whereas it is difference in nationality which is the core of 'Crook'. Also, the film refrains from being frivolous by turning it's lead protagonist into an overnight hero. He arrives in Australia as a common man, stays on to be the one and exudes good enough vibes to stay on as one as well.

For the young character played by Emraan Hashmi, life isn't pretty much defined on a set path. Now quite sure about tomorrow, he arrives in Australia for a better life. As he comes in touch with a 'desi' student (Neha Sharma) and builds a relationship of convenience, he has his first brush with racism. However, he stays away from the mess and doesn't have any intention of getting involved into the proceedings. Things take an ugly turn though as a battle rages between Neha's brother (Arjan Bajwa), a self proclaimed protector of Indians in Australia and some local goons, hence leading to blood spilling over the roads. For Emraan, it's a matter of making a decision - Sit at the fence and let it all continue or take a stand and make his own little contribution to dilute the tension.

This is the reason why it is a pleasant surprise to see Emraan Hashmi, who so far has revelled in playing a man with grey/evil shades, pick up a different persona for 'Crook'. He may be a little naughty and also a liar when it comes to smaller issues. In fact he doesn't even become a moral crusader even as the city is burning with protests around racism. However, when it comes to stepping ahead on sheer humanitarian grounds for the ones close to him, he does take his first step forward.

What impresses most is the fact that there is no Australia bashing here. In fact the film asks Indians to first look into themselves, check their acts and hold on a little before drawing battle line with Australians. It's the subtle conveying of 'let there be peace' rather than any slogan shouting which makes 'Crook' totally different from what one was otherwise perceiving about the film.

With the core of 'Crook' being pretty impressive, what takes the film back are two factors - 1) The title and 2) An ordinary first half. Really, for a film like this, a different title would have helped the film. 'Crook' gives an impression of this being a quintessential Emraan Hashmi affair with the character not giving two hoots to anything.

However, that is far from true. Also, a quite some time goes into building the base for 'Crook'. There are a few light moments and couple of catchy songs here but still, one pines for the drama to begin. There are on and off moments that do fit into the scheme of the film's narrative but then the actual story kick starts only in the second half.

Thankfully, once the drama picks up there is no stopping with the penultimate 20-25 minutes taking the film to a high. There is a distinct Mahesh Bhatt touch to the narrative here as Emraan finally realises the gravity of the situation and doesn't hold himself back any more. No doubt, 'Crook' stands out as yet another consistent and good performance from one of the most reliable actors that Bollywood boasts of today.

Arjan is good as a menacing paradoxical character who doesn't mind killing his own folks when it comes to preserving the rights of a bigger group. After 'Fashion' and 'Guru', this is yet another confident performance from him. Neha makes a fine debut as she has a far better and lengthier role than what one would have imagined from a girl making her debut in a Bhatt film.

She looks good and shows a decent range within her role boundaries. 'Crook' could well be one of the most honest effort coming from the house of Bhatts. For a production house that has revelled in picking up newspaper headlines and presenting to audience some of the most topical issues of our times, Vishesh Films springs a pleasant surprise by actually sharing a point of view which is different from what one would have expected from 'Crook'. Though the film has at its heart there theme of racial discrimination and abuse, the question it asks the audience is - 'If we look within our own self, are we any less racial?'

lol I was completely off about what the story is, I thought Emraan Hashmi is playing a Vampire in it, but that is just a gag for one of the songs. Next time I won't skim through so fast when reading about a movie.

Movie Reviews

Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt have often admitted that newspaper headlines citing a burning issue have sown the seeds of a film in their minds. And CROOK, directed by the talented Mohit Suri, deals with one such issue: Racism in Australia. Well, depiction of racism on the Hindi screen isn't entirely new, since I - PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN explored the issue several monsoons ago. In fact, the issue has only got aggravated across the globe post 9/11. A film like CROOK holds a lot of significance also because the plight of Indian students in Australia continues to hit headlines to this day.

Write your own movie review of Crook: It'S Good To Be Bad
Known for high concept films, Bhatt brothers' new outing CROOK, unfortunately, tackles the issue half-heartedly. Sure, you expect more from the Bhatts since the makers of repute are known to call a spade a spade, but the problem with CROOK is that the message doesn't come across strongly. That's because it tries to strike a balance between a love story and the racism issue. In fact, it takes a really long time to catch the bull by the horns [read the racism issue] and when it does, it doesn't leave a stunning impact. In fact, it's all superficial. Also, the Bhatts are synonymous with lilting music in film after film, but unlike their earlier attempts, the music of CROOK lacks the quality to linger in your memory.

In a nutshell, CROOK comes across as a half-hearted effort.

CROOK tells the story of Jai [Emraan Hashmi], who has a knack of getting into trouble. His father was a gangster who wanted to reform, but was killed by the cops. When Jai grows up, Joseph [Gulshan Grover], a friend of his father, sends him to Australia - a land far away from his past.

Almost immediately after landing, Jai meets Suhani [Neha Sharma], an Indian Australian. Her elder brother Samarth [Arjan Bajwa] is convinced that Australians have a one-point agenda to bring Indians down. Jai finds accommodation with a group of youngsters [Mashhoor Amrohi].

Jai knows that if he can make Suhani fall in love with him, he could eventually attain permanent residency by marrying her. Jai also flirts with Nicole, the stripper from a strip club. However, her brother, Russel, is against Indians and attacks them for a reason. Jai had left India to lead a hassle free life, but finds himself in the heart of a racially disturbed city.

Frankly, you expect the writer to come to the point at the very outset. Instead, he tends to focus on the [lackluster] romance between the lead pair, songs and [forced] comedy, while the core issue [racism] takes a complete backseat towards the first hour. The writer ought to know that this one's an issue-based film and the romance-song-comedy routine cannot be the priority. However, the point that both Indians and Australians are racist and both sides need to introspect is indeed novel.

CROOK redeems itself in the second hour, but it has more to do with Mohit Suri's handling of the subject than the subject itself. However, one fails to understand why the Australian guy has a change of heart, when he zeroes on Neha towards the end. There should've been at least one sequence to clear things up. But in this case, no explanations are forthcoming.

There's no denying that Mohit Suri is capable of much more, but the ordinary script doesn't really provide him the wings to fly. Pritam's music is of the run of the mill variety, with 'Chhala' being the pick of the lot.

Emraan Hashmi is competent, giving his all to the role. He looks aggressive when required and expresses helplessness well, when he turns his back on Neha at the interval point. Neha acts very well. The confidence is visible in several sequences. Gulshan Grover is hardly there. Mashhoor Amrohi leaves a mark. Arjan Bajwa is fair. Smilee Suri appears in a cameo. The Australian actors are nice.

On the whole, CROOK has its moments, but they're few and far between. It lacks the power that one associates with an issue-based film.

Emraan's so many films are hit, he is also good actor, then why didn't he get that much popularity like others? Really confusing.

LOLL can you name those so many Hit films?😲

simple, he has a niche audience and doesn't have the appeal of a "SUPERSTAR" ! for example his "HIT" films gross less/ same as a Ranbir/ imran "flop" .. his appeal is restricted!

although i must say he came a longgggggggggggg way as an actor since his Footpath days!

Masand: 'Crook' is colossally disappointing

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Neha Sharma, Arjun Bajwa

Director: Mohit Suri

With "Crook", director Mohit Suri raises the issue of racism against Indians in Australia, but reduces that globally relevant concern to an amateurish vendetta story.

The film stars Emran Hashmi as a petty movie pirate who immigrates illegally to Melbourne, and falls for an earnest radio jockey (played by newcomer Neha Sharma). Her brother (played by Arjan Bajwa) is a nostril-flaring angry man who repeatedly mutters puerile dialogue about holding on to his culture, and who picks fights with the local goras.

Admirably the film doesn't take sides, and illustrates how the 'victims' of racism are guilty of practicing racism themselves. But "Crook" doesn't have the skill or the scale to address the issue on a serious level. The plot degenerates into a predictable revenge fantasy, in which the trigger for these racial clashes is an aborted romance. Clumsily scripted, the film focuses more on romance and comedy than the issue it claims to address.

The second half in particular is a mangled mess that climaxes in an unintentionally comical scenario involving an Australian stripper bound to an abortion table in an abandoned warehouse, preparing to be killed by a vengeance-seeking Indian.

Colossally disappointing even going by the modest standards of director Mohit Suri's previous films, "Crook" has neither the slickness of "Zeher" nor the sensitivity of "Woh Lamhe". It's just badly written, badly acted, and badly directed. I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Mohit Suri's "Crook". Surely you have better things to do than watch this film!
