How many times have you gone to watch a movie and you realize that the star's voice isn't exactly what you heard on an interview. Just to quote a few examples, in recent times Koena Mitra's voice was dubbed for Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, Rimmi Sen didn't sound her usual self in Deewane Hue Paagal while we still don't know the actual voice of Tanushree Dutta who was dubbed by Pallavi Joshi in Chocolate.

There are a lot of reasons why voices are dubbed, the most common being unable to modulate the right voice or the right accent for the character.

Our story begins with some of the most experienced of the lot - the Bhatt camp. Always known for importing great music from across the border and redoing them, they are not too far behind when it comes to doing other peoples voices either. We can go as back as 2001 when a young (not child like young but young in his adult years young) Aftab Shivdasani's voice was dubbed in Kasoor by director Vikram Bhatt. His voice was not manly enough to match the image he portrayed in the movie. Off course, he was not the only one. His co-star and debutant Lisa Ray was dubbed by actress Divya Dutta. And it doesn't end there. Divya Dutta, who also starred in the movie, had to be dubbed for obvious reasons by some other voice as two ladies could not have the same voice. Talk about Voice swapping.

Rani Mukherjee's voice was dubbed in Ghulam, Dino Morea in Raaz, Bipasha Basu in Jism, Ashmit Patel in his debut Inteha and Udita Goswami in Paap and then Zeher.

Off course the list is big. But certain reasons are not. For instance Aishwarya Rai refused to dub for the Hindi version of Bride and Prejudice (Balle Balle, Amritsar to L.A.) as she was paid only to act for the English version.

Rekha also has quite a lot to offer through her voice and here's something really freaky. She was the saving grace for the producers of Waaris. After the untimely death of Smita Patil, Rekha decided to dub for Smita's portions. Incidentally, Rekha also dubbed for late south Indian actress Soundarya (when she was still alive) in her Bollywood debut film Sooryavansham opposite Amitabh Bachchan. That was the last time the controversial duo of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha came together, though not face to face, but voice to voice.

And off course we have our foreign imports as well. Amisha Patel returned after studying in U.K. and her voice was dubbed in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. Model Katrina Kaif's voice was dubbed in David Dhawan's Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya. And finally Nigar Khan who was deported from India was dubbed in Double Cross - Ek Dhoka. Bet she couldn't convince the immigration officials with her accent.
