Nothing Can Keep Us ApartPart 33 - Pyaar Ya Izzat?
When Maan first left Geet alone, she was so angry with him that she was sure she never wanted to see him again. After she began to calm down a little, she began to realize that his outburst was odd somehow. In the past, when he would yell at her, the things he said to or accused her of, were related to the situation. This time it was like Maan had purposely avoided the real reason he was upset. The more Geet thought, the more she realized that instead of yelling back at him, she should have insisted Maan tell her what the matter was.
Geet had just decided to go find Maan, when she felt a large hand cover her mouth and another pin her arms to her side. She tried to scream and struggled to get away, but she couldn't. Her eyes widened as she saw a group of armed, masked men surrounding her, the same men who had been with her brother Brij when he attacked her. She continued to struggle as fear raced through her body. One of the men stepped forward and began talking to her.
"Did you really think you could come back after you disgraced your family? Did you think we would let you live after you humiliated your own brother? When you put Brij in jail we vowed vengeance in his name. You sealed your own fate by coming back, Geet."
Geet was feeling desperate, more desperate than she had that terrible night. Before, she had been given a chance to run by her father. This time she was bound and surrounded, with no apparent way to break free. In a frantic effort to do something, Geet tried to bite the hand that was over her mouth. This caused the man to release his grip long enough for Geet to cry out for Maan.
As her mouth was again covered, the leader gave a menacing laugh and taunted, "There's no use crying for help. You're all alone out here, and if you think that your lover will be able to save you this time, forget it. He's being dealt with, is probably already dead."
Tears began to stream down Geet's face at these words, but the man wasn't finished. "This entire situation is your own fault. If you had just learned your lesson from what happened with your friend Channi, everything would have been all right. Now, it's you who needs to be made an example of. After today, the girls of this village will again understand the meaning of izzat."
Having finished his ridiculous taunting, the leader stepped back and gave a small nod. Suddenly Geet was thrust down to the ground in front of him. Stunned by this unexpected action, Geet stayed on her hands and knees, feeling a little dizzy. She had no idea that a sword was being raised high, ready to end her life.
Maan rushed forward, and almost at the last minute was able to deflect the sword away from Geet with the one he held. As Maan fought with the leader, Geet was again grabbed by one of the men, and the rest rushed in to help their companion. Geet's joy at seeing Maan was overshadowed by her fear for his life, as he battled all but her captor singlehandedly. Eventually, as his companions began to fall, the man holding Geet let her go and joined the fight. As soon as Maan saw that Geet was free, he ordered her to call the police and go inside the house.
"I don't have a phone!" cried Geet, above the noise of the fight, terrified as she saw how outnumbered her husband was.
It was hard for Maan to concentrate on anything except survival. However, he remembered that his mobile phone was in his pants' pocket. Keeping the sword in one hand, Maan used the other to pull his phone out. With one massive movement, he pushed his attackers back, making them stumble or fall to the ground. Using this opportunity he turned, and threw the phone to Geet, calling to her to catch it. As Geet did so, she saw one of the men come up behind Maan and slash at his back. Maan yelled in pain, but turned back and slammed his fist hard into his attacker's jaw.
Geet couldn't bare to see Maan in pain, and kept calling his name frantically. She could think of nothing but going to his side. When Maan saw Geet moving towards them, he yelled at her furiously to leave. Geet didn't heed his words, which required Maan to threaten her about what would happen if he had to worry about her as well as himself. This got Geet's attention.
Geet ran inside the house and with trembling fingers, dialed the police station. It seemed like an eternity before her call was answered but eventually it was picked up. In a choked voice she told everything that had happened and begged them to come quickly to save her husband. Geet was assured that they would be there as soon as possible, but that did not make her feel any better. It would be at least 10 or 15 minutes before the police arrived. Geet was scared to think what might happen to Maan in that time. If he was killed.... Geet couldn't even comprehend a life without Maan in it.
"Babaji, please, please keep him safe. I.....I'll do anything but please let him be alright. Please protect my husband!"
Geet continued crying and praying, hoping that Maan would be alright. She knew that Maan would want her to stay away, but she couldn't stand not knowing how he was. Without much thought for the consequences, Geet cautiously made her way back outside. She was hoping to find that maybe the men had run away, but her hope was in vain.
Some of the men were on the ground, either unconscious or incapacitated in some way. However, Maan still fought against two of them and it seemed to Geet that he was getting tired. Her hands flew to her mouth in horror when she saw the slashes across his back and arm. Geet didn't think she could stand much more of this fight.
Maan had similar thoughts to Geet, knowing that he needed to end this soon. In one smooth motion he disarmed first one and then the other. Though now weaponless, both men tried to tackle Maan. When he moved out of the way, they ran into each other, which allowed Maan the opportunity to slam their heads together, effectively ending the fight.
As the last two attackers fell to the ground, Maan leaned over and placed his hands on his thighs. His chest heaved up and down as his body tried to recover from the exertion it had gone under. During the fight Maan's adrenalin had been so high that he was virtually unaware of pain. Now that he had stopped he could feel the sting in his back, the painful throbbing in his right arm and the dull ache of every muscle in his body.
Maan barely had time to think about Geet before she came running towards him, crying his name. As Maan stood up straight, Geet threw herself at him, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck and almost pushing him over. Maan's arms reflexively moved to encircle Geet's waist, even as his muscles screamed in protest.
"Geet! You were supposed to stay inside the house! What if something had happened to you?"
In response Geet pressed her crying face into his strong shoulder and held him more tightly. Maan wanted to keep yelling at Geet, but just couldn't seem able to in the face of her distressed state. Instead, he held her close to him and kissed her head in comfort and reassurance.
