Author's note: I put this at the beginning so that everyone would read it. 1st-If you asked to be on the pm list, I'm sorry but I didn't have time to update it. I promiss that you will be added by the next update. 2nd-This weekend I'm doing family vacation stuff, so I have no idea when the next update will be done. Don't worry I haven't disappeared, I'm just having fun away from here. 3rd-I know the update is short, but it was either a short update now, or wait for 3 or 4 days. You tell me which you prefer. Enjoy!

Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 26 - One more step.

When Maan and Geet returned home, Maan insisted Geet go to sleep immediately, which she did without protest. While Geet was getting read, Maan left for his customary night workout. It was a routine that they fell into the day after their marriage. Geet would get ready and go to sleep by the time Maan came back to their room. It may have seemed strange to others, but it kept Geet from complaining about sharing a room, and that was all Maan cared about.

Maan tried to concentrate only on the movement of his body, but he couldn't tonight. He kept remembering the look in Geet's face when she mentioned Rahul's name. He hadn't been able to persuade her to tell him the details of what happened, but it didn't matter. If Rahul were in front of him just at this moment, Maan would cheerfully use him as a punching bag. As it was, there was no way that Maan would tolerate Geet working with that dog, no matter her belief that she should be able to take care of herself.

Giving up all pretense of exercising, Maan tried to think of a solution to the situation. He didn't have the heart to take Geet off the project, when she had been so excited about it. However, he would rather loose the project entirely, than see his wife distressed like she was this evening. Finally, he decided to call Mr. Chopra. Grabbing his phone, he punched in the number and waited for the call to be answered.

"Mr. Chopra, I called your cell phone because if we have to work with Mr. Rahul on this project, then I will end our deal for this project."

"You mean your firm won't handle our project if Mr. Rahul is involved?"

"Yes, that's right. I don't want Mr. Rahul involved in this project."

"May I ask the reason for this stipulation?"

"Frankly, Mr. Chopra, I'm not comfortable with having my wife working with him. If you are the one we deal with, then fine, but if Rahul is involved then the deal is off. You can give me your answer by Monday."

With this one phone call, Maan was satisfied that Geet would no longer be in a position where she would have to deal with Rahul. Now that the situation was dealt with, Maan decided to get back to his workout. It wasn't too long before he decided to quit. Though he was no longer worried about Rahul, his concentration was still poor. He kept remembering his moments with Geet at the party. Without choosing to, he kept reliving their dance, and remembering how Geet looked as she played in the rain. That memory was particularly hard on his self control.

It took Maan quite awhile before he thought he would be able to go back to their room without doing something either he or Geet would regret. He went right to the bathroom without looking at Geet, as he was determined to avoid temptation as much as possible. When he was ready, he slipped silently under the bed covers and told himself to go to sleep quickly.

That was definitely his intention, and he was quite tired, but sleep didn't come. Maan tried to relax, but it was very difficult. For one thing, he knew that Rahul was not the only creep who might treat his wife with less respect than she deserved. How was he going to protect her from all of them? It also didn't help that he kept recalling that no matter how far apart he and Geet started out sleeping from each other, somehow Geet would end up snuggled next to him and he would have one or both of his arms wrapped tightly around her. It had been like that since the first day after their marriage.

Maan tried to ignore the fact that his beautiful wife lay fast asleep only a few inches away from him, but it was very difficult. He wanted to turn over and look at her, even though there was only a faint amount of light from the moon to see by. The temptation was so strong, that the only thing that kept him from giving in, was the thought of what Geet would say if she woke up.

Maan continued to fight his urges and try to go to sleep. After a while, he noticed that Geet was becoming restless. She would twist and turn, and with every movement, she came closer to the middle of the bed. Maan had found it difficult to try and sleep before, but now it was even harder. After grappling with himself, Maan finally gave in and slowly eased over next to Geet. Careful not to wake her, he gently pulled her into his arms. Geet's restlessness stopped, and she nestled closely into Maan's side, as if that was what she had been searching for.

As he held Geet close to him, Maan could sense his tension easing. All his stress and anxiety melted away with the feel of her body next to his. He didn't know what her reaction would be if she discovered them close like this, but he intended to plead ignorance if she did. While Maan began to drift off to sleep, he finally accepted the fact that he couldn't seem to keep away from the girl in his arms, and he didn't want to. No matter what lay ahead in their future, Maan knew that he wanted to fall asleep like this for the rest of his life.

i love your short update... and short update is way better than no update! i love fic... it's amazing specially the way you describe maan's feelings and his character just in general... can't wait to read more

Sorry Laxmi for not commenting on the last few parts. Thank you for the PM's. Loved the party scene and how you incorporated the rain and Rahul sequence in it. Loved it.

Aww.. Maan was so cute in this update. They both feel restless away from each other. So sweet. They like to snuggle up to each other while sleeping. So cute.

So when is Geet going to get an ultrasound where maan can see his baby for the first time. Is Vicky going to appear soon in the story?

though I would hate the weekend due to the absence of Geet and now even your FF, I guess you put in a lot of effort for the story, and for your story, the wait is worth it.

I really enjoyed the story...
