Character Sketch -
Pratigya: A simple, shy, cultured young girl who longs to be loved.. Her father died when her mother was pregnant with her and her mother died while giving birth to her, so she was given to her distant relatives to raise her. Ever since, she was forced to live the life of a maid.. she had never known the joy of being held lovingly by her mother or being pampered by her father - she hadn't ever even been told that she was loved, precious, special or even liked. All she had to look forward to each day was the night time. The only time where she could close her eyes and dream of a world where she was loved..
Krishna: A spoilt young man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. Being the son of the influential businessman, Thakur Sajjan Singh, he has never known poverty, deep pain or suffering. He is educated yet throws his weight around - he loves having the upper hand! Whatever he wants, he gets and he either doesn't know or care who suffered because of his obstinacy. He hails from a family who disrespect their wives and daughter-in-laws, and women in general.. He cannot stand the word 'no' unless he is the one using it!
'PRATIGYA! HERE, NOW!' She was in for it now.. she could tell - her aunt's voice was deafening! Trembling, Pratigya made her way down the hall, dreading what was going to happen next.. She stopped, slowly looked up at her aunt, then quickly resumed her gaze at the floor. 'WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?!' Pratigya's aunt screamed. Her aunt grabbed her face, jerked it up and then thrust a dirty dish in her face - Pratigya's insides knotted together.. 'I left this dish here TWO WHOLE MINUTES ago, WHY has it not been cleaned?!' Pratigya kept silent, which just infuriated her aunt even more! Pratigya felt a sear of pain strike her left cheek. Gasping, she pulled away from her aunt and her hand flew up to her stinging cheek. She had been slapped! Pratigya turned and tried to run off, but her aunt was too quick for her! She grabbed Pratigya's dupatta and pulled it, strangling her - she pulled Pratigya's long black hair until Pratigya's tears flooded her face.. 'Listen, you stupid girl, I will NOT put up with your insolent behaviour any longer - mend your ways - else you'll regret it..' her aunt's threatening words stabbed at Pratigya's heart, provoking more of Pratigya's precious tears to spill down her cheeks. Her aunt threw her to the cold, stone kitchen floor and slammed the door behind her. Pratigya sat up, leaning against the wall and drew her legs towards her, the darkness creeping towards her. She looked up at the moon, bright in the sky, tears spilling down her face and whispered 'Maa..'.
