Noted saxophonist Manohari Singh passes away at 79

Saw him performing on Asha Bhosale special episode.. wonderful artist.. RIP Manohari Singh ji

MUMBAI: Noted saxophonist Manohari Singh, who was a key member of music director R D Burman's team, passed away here today following a brief illness, industry sources said.

He was 79. Singh performed at a "Shankar Jaikishen nite" in suburban Borivali last week.

Singh had played the saxophone in many Burman compositions, including the hit 'Gaata rahe mera dil', from 'Guide'. He has also played for songs in the recent movies like 'Chalte Chalte' (2003) and 'Veer Zaara' (2004).

Born in Kolkata in a family of musicians, Singh watched his father and uncle play in music studios for films and in night-clubs.

After trying his hand at the English key flute, the clarinet and the mandolin, Singh finally chose the saxophone as his forte.

His first break as a saxophonist with Burman was in 1958 for the movie 'Sitaron Se Aage'. He had also released an album, 'Sax appeal' containing saxophone renditions of various Hindi movie music tracks.

That's indeed really sad, just few weeks back we saw him on Indian Idol and now he is no more. Glad Asha ji introduced him to us young kids who didn't have any clue who he was.
May God Bless his soul.

That is so sad. Ashaji had introduced him to the world. Otherwise we wouldnt have any idea that he was with R.D. Burman's grp, since the beginning till now.

RIP Manohari Singh ji.

Its really very sad news, may his departed soul rest in peace.😭
A few weeks ago Ashaji introduced him at Indian Idol stage and said, " Manohri aisa lagta hai na ki Pancam(R D Burman) yahi tumahre saath khara hua hai."
Life is too short, who knew that day that Mr. M Singh will leave us so soon. Its a great loss to Bollywood and Indian Music industry.😭
