Nowadays with the help of softwares, lot of fiddling is done with the voice of a singer. Hear a singer live and one will come to know what the true picture is. I have read many people accusing Javed Ali that he doesn't sound as good while giving live performances as he is during playback.
I have noticed similar problem with Naresh Iyer. Many of his performances in the 'Mission Ustaad' were really bad. But that guy won a National Award for Robaaroo.
Tell Farhan Akhtar to sing live once and we will come to know how good a singer he is.
But of course songs of Rock On and songs of Javed Ali are smash hits. This is what the modern day trend is i.e. experimenting with new voices and this is one of the reason why trained singers are taking a back-seat.

Here is what singer Shaan says, "Music directors are avoiding established singers to bring some novelty in the playback singing, while compromising on the quality. Auto tuning software ensures that even rough voice can sound good while finally recording and releasing the song."

Even Sonu Nigam was quite miffed with music company Sony when he heard the news that they wanted to tamper with his voice in the song 'Soniyo'. We all know how big a hit that song became with his original voice.

In the golden era of music we never had any softwares. And that era produced singers of the caliber of Rafi Saab, Lata ji, Asha ji, Manna Dey etc. Yeh log jo mic ke peeche gaate the, wohi hamare kaano ko sunta tha.

I am not against technology being used to the maximum, nither anyone should be as it is the technology that has given them this milage as well as the liberties they have e.g. seperate singers can record seperately, echo system etc., but yes I would not like to always listen to altered sounds. Any form of technology can be used for advancement or for destruction, it is on the people using it. The voice alteration software was developed for security purposes then it came to music industry to make some improbable sounds and to rectify glitches at the last minute if any, but now they have started to misuse it. But remember the singers who allege sometimes their voices has also been modified but we never come to know about it.

Yes, maybe right.....
But i think people shouldn't be biased while voting, like if they are from punjab or any other certain area and voting there representative, they should vote the one who is deserving, have quality in voice. He / She must be voted on the base of best performance not only liking, otherwise competition looks unhealthy

Technology and music can't be separated. Former has always helped music to progress and grow. A glaring example would be twin track effect used by R D Burman in baharo ke sapne which was later used to produce katra katra milti hai (Ijazat). It is same Asha same R DB but the effect is outof the world.

AR Rahman uses technology extensively to make songs. Once I had opportunity to meet his sound engineer and was stunned to know that ARR has th best recording station with most diverse loops and audio samples in Asia...!
How ARR makes a song:

1. Rahman records a songs over a period of 10-15 days. A singer sings one song perhaps innumberable time till Rahman gives a handsup. Once that signal has been got the singer realizes that his job is done . Now rahman sits over his singing and edits the bad parts and couples all the best parts and after another day of hardwork the singers work is ready. The singer never sang that song continously but his best parts are selected and sampled .

2. Rahman then records music or what you call as BGM. After that he mixes it with the vocal part. Then suddenly he may realize that both of them don't gel well in frequency. And then freqeuncy division modulation takes place. Its a huge process friends which very well packs the music and vocal part.

3. Let us take an example of Shreya Ghosal. Rahman needs Shreya Ghosal to sing in track 15 ie the Highest. But Shreya can sing only till 11. So wat can Rahman do. Let her sing in track 8 -9 in which she is comfortable and then simply phase modulates the vocal to appear as if she sang in track 15. This is a very costly process and risky too so Rahman has done it only 5-6 times.

He uses softwares but doesn't use to "produce" tunes. Instead he use them so effectively to "edit" tunes.

@Indradhanush and Kaushik ji...

I don't deny that technology has its advantages too. Sonu Nigam infact recorded a song few months back for a hindi movie while he was in US.

But what I feel is technology is over used now. I mean didn't we get to hear so many soulful melodies in the olden days without all the stuff that Rahman uses. I will any day would love to re-visit that era.
