Actually this track is either a "love it" or a "hate it" kind. But don't judge the book by its cover, its a track that will take a hell lot of time to digest.
Like-for a typical listener, it just comes and goes, again just comes and goes and you don't get that what on earth (or water-pun intended!) was sung.
But, its a likable track nonetheless.
Again, it took time for me to recognize sadhnaji in this. Not the usual voice that we are accustomed to, but aain, a "different incarnation".
Its not a sad track per se, but a slow and an extremely tough one at that and add A.R. rehman the maestro, and it becomes seductive. Again, experimentation. But with mixed results. Sadhna's "new" voice isn't exactly convincing at first, but after a while, gels well with the track. Her voice control and scale of singing is just brutally awesome given the range and tempo set by ARR.
But the overall feel and expressions could have a shade better. For one, I cannot comment on the audio quality but the clarity of voice was not really that clear. Volume had to be increased to judge her clarity and tonal quality. But still, it does fall short given her calibre of singing.
Second, the music. Yes, as some of you have mentioned out that ARR recognizes the composition of water as his best, but he has done many, much better compositions as compared to this. No matter how good or tough the raag it was based on, but for we typical people, it becomes just plain boring after listening to it once, twice or at the most thrice. But, no, don't count as forgettable. Some tone variation and a hint of change in tempo could have yielded dramaticallly better results.
But despite these flaws, you got to give it to sadhna's sargams. A bloody bold attempt and wow, what a voice she has produced. She takes a daring approach from start to finish and throughout the track you are surprised by singing and her immense talent that has been utilisd by ARR. Feel is another high plus point of her singing in this track. To get a feel of this, it makes sense to get a better quality audio version than the one posted here. it works wonders. Full of emotions. Mind you, this track can either be slow or even sad or even tragic or even..not really sure but irrespective of the genre, sadhnaji has justified it fully single handidly on her feel plus quality of voice.
I voted it an 8.5, but deserves a 9. yet will keep it to 8.5 based on aforementioned drawbacks.
And yes, alkaji's track was much much better in overall perspective.
