Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 7 - (Maha Episode 2) A devastating truth

Upon walking up to the hospital reception desk, Savitri requested Geet's room. The nurse asked who she was and told her that Mrs. Khurana could only receive visits from family members. Savitri smiled inwardly as the nurse referred to Geet as Mrs. Khurana. After telling her of the awful situation Geet was in, Maan had also explained that the hospital believed him to be Geet's husband. While there was little to be happy about a the moment, Savitri was pleased with this indication that Maan was much more interested in Geet than he let on.

Eyeing the nurse with a regal air, Savitri stated, "I happen to be Mr. Khurana's grandmother. I believe that makes me family. I would like to see my Potha Bahu now."

The nurse, realizing that Savitri was someone very important, got one of the staff to escort her to Geet's room.

Savitri smiled when she entered Geet's room and found her eating food provided by the hospital. Geet was such a dear girl and she deserved all the happiness available in life. It seemed to Savitri that her grandson was starting to make giving Geet happiness his personal mission. She intended to give both of them every encouragement, but right now Geet needed a grandmother's love and understanding.

"Geet, beta, how are you feeling?" Savitri asked in a soft voice as she came into the room and sat next to Geet's bed.

"Ma'am, aap yahan kaise?"

"Mr. Khurana called to tell me you were in the hospital, so I came to see how you are," was the response.

"But why? I mean I'm very happy you're here, but why would Maa... I mean Sir call you?" Geet felt embarrassed that she had almost used Maan's name in front of Savitri Ma'am. It was how she thought of him, but she knew that it wasn't appropriate to use his name now that she was his secretary.

"Well, my dear, he called me because he is my grandson and he was worried about you."

"Your grandson? You're his Dadi? Why didn't he tell me? Ma'am, why didn't you ever tell me? All these months I had no idea. I thought you were a client." Geet's cheeks burned with a heavy blush as she considered how foolishly she had behaved. Why, she had called Maan dusht danaav to his grandmother's face. More than once! Geet didn't know where to look.

"I know you had no idea. I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to feel you had to pretend. Believe me, I am well aware of my grandson's difficult nature. I found it refreshing to talk with someone who wouldn't try to flatter me just to impress Maan." Savitri didn't add that she had also been impressed by Geet's affect on Maan and had wanted to find out more about her without raising suspicions.

"Geet beta, Maan told me about your situation. I am so sorry you've had to go through such trouble. I hope you know how much I care for you." Geet nodded yes. "Good. It would make me very happy if you would consider me as family and call me Dadi."

"Oh, no Ma'am. I couldn't do that. I'm sure that Sir wouldn't like it." Geet couldn't imagine what Maan would think, but it probably would be nothing nice.

Savitri got an arrogant look on her face as she said, "It's none of his business what I ask you to call me and if he tries to take issue with it, I shall take great pleasure in showing him that I can still pull his ears!" This statement created such an unexpected picture in Geet's mind that she burst into a fit of giggles. Savitri joined her and they both had a much needed laugh, all at Maan's expense. Once the laughter died down Savitri enquired with a smile, "You will call me Dadi, yes Geet?"

"Ji, Dadiji," was Geet's repsonse as she smiled back.

"Good. Now, Beta, I want you to tell Dadi why you won't tell her impossible grandson the name of the man who betrayed you." Geet's smile died, and she looked away from Savitri as she moved her hands to rest protectively over her baby.

Savitri was saddened by the sudden change in Geet, but she continued questioning her. "Beta, is it that you feel ashamed? There's no need. You have done nothing wrong."

"I know, Dadiji. It's not that. I really do appreciated Sir's offer of help, but I just can't accept it. I have this overwhelming feeling that it is only I who will get justice for myself. I can't depend on anyone for this. Please don't ask me anymore," pleaded Geet as tears started forming in her eyes.

"Don't cry, Beta. I won't ask you anymore, I promise. However I want a promise from you in return. Promise that you will ask for anything that you need, and if you change your mind, don't hesitate to come to Maan or myself."

"Yes, I promise, Dadiji."

"Dadiji?" came the question from a deep voice that made one of the women smile with pleasure and the other to blush and stutter as she glanced up to see those gorgeous, mocking eyes looking back at her.

"Yes, I requested Geet to call me Dadi, and I must say that she does it with a lot more respect than someone else I know. So I don't want you to give her any grief about it, samjha?

"Dadima, please," was all the response that Maan gave to that small set down.

"There, you see? That's exactly what I mean. Absolutely no respect!"

Knowing that they both were only pretending to be annoyed with each other, Geet laughed, but could not cover up a yawn that escaped her lips. Savitri, seeing this decided that it would be best if she and Maan left, so that Geet could sleep for the night.

"Geet beta, tum so jao. We'll talk more tomorrow." Savitri cupped Geet's face in a loving gesture and pulled the hospital blanket up higher before ushering Maan out of the room.

Once they were out of Geet's hearing Maan questioned, "Did she tell you, Dadima?"

"I'm sorry. She wouldn't tell me either. She's adamant that no one will help her in this matter." It bothered Savitri to see her grandson looking so frustrated, but she was also glad to see this further sign of his feelings for Geet.

"Dadima, what can we do? If she won't tell us anything, how do we help her?" came Maan's almost desperate plea.

"We help her to get well. We help her in her desire to build a life for herself and her child. We give her our support no matter what may happen. It may be that in the future she will change her mind, and seek help from us, but if we pressure her she might refuse us everything altogether."

"Theek hai, Dadima. I'll stop questioning her for now."

****************

The whole Khurana office was talking about Geet behind MK's back. It had been two and a half days since Geet became ill and Maan took her to the hospital. Immediately the speculations started flying, some people suggesting that she had appendicitis, others saying that it was food poisoning, but as Maan was also gone from the office during much of that time, people just became more confused. A few brave souls questioned Pinky in the hope that she would be as talkative as usual, but they were disappointed. Pinky's only response was that if they wanted to know they should ask Geet. No one had tried yet, being too afraid to say anything in Maan's presence. Geet had returned to the office that afternoon, and had not been gone from MK's side since. Sasha was the most upset by the whole situation. She had been moping around the office when ever MK was not there, sure that he was spending time with Geet for some reason (in which thought she was correct). After Geet came back to work, she spent most of her time complaining to Tasha, and wondering what did Geet have that she didn't have?

"I don't know what she has, Sasha, but I know that I would like some of THAT!" That happened to be Dev Khurana, Maan's younger brother, who had just come into the building.

"Tasha, why do you waste your time drooling over him? He's married. A big fat waste of time married. Look, he even brought his wife with him today."

"I know he's married, but he's just sooooo cute. I can't stop myself." Sasha just rolled her eyes in disgust and went back to brooding about Maan and Geet.

"Dev, remind me again why you brought me here?" questioned Naintara in a very bored voice.

"I want you to see what the office is like. It's good for you to know what the family business is like. Besides, you haven't seen Maan once since we came back, and the only place that I am sure of his whereabouts is the office." Dev smiled his most winning smile at Naintara, and was awarded with a small smile in return.

As Dev and Naintara were walking towards the end of the corner, Geet was coming from the other side, Maan having just finally let her out of his office to deliver some paperwork. She was busy looking through the files to make sure she knew where they needed to be taken, so she was not looking up when she came to the corner. She bumped quite hard into something, loosing her balance and falling face down on the floor. Realizing that she had run into someone she started to apologize as she looked into the face of the person helping her up. What she saw gave her the shock of her life. There, so close that she could reach out and touch him, was Dev, looking at her with his eyes and mouth opened wide. For a moment neither reacted, too surprised to say anything. A few seconds passed and Geet felt her fury well up inside her, ready to burst out.

"You devil!" cried Geet as she slapped Dev hard across his face. "You traitor!" with another slap on the other side. "How dare you! I will see you in jail for what you've done to me!"

The whole office, including Maan came running to see what the commotion was. Maan hurried up to Geet, shocked to she the anger on her face. Glancing to the left he saw Dev, standing there, looking uncertain. Clueless as to what was going on Maan asked, "Geet? Dev? What's happened? What's the problem?"

Pointing at Dev, Geet answered in a shrill voice, "It's him. He's the one. He's the one who betrayed me!"

"Geet, what are you saying?" questioned Maan, too surprised to fully comprehend the meaning of her words.

Dev instinctively said to Maan, "Bhaiya, I don't know what she's talking about. I've never met this woman before."

"Don't lie! Don't try to pretend you don't know me! Don't...." and then Dev's first word registered. "Bhaiya?" she questioned looking at Maan.

"Yes, Dev is my brother," confirmed Maan. All of Geet's attention left Dev as she focussed on the terrible reality of what Maan had said.

"Your brother," she repeated as she slowly started to back away from Maan. "All this time I've been trying to find him. Going to the Canadian Embassy, searching online, everything I could think of, only to find out you both are brothers?" At this point Geet remembered the times that Maan tried to force her to sign the papers for the land, and a devastating thought entered her mind. "You wanted the land," she whispered in a horrified voice. "You must have known about this the whole time. I thought you were my friend, but you're just a thief and a lier."

Geet couldn't stand to be in Maan's presence another second. She forgot about Dev, forgot about her need for justice, forgot about her determination to start a new life, forgot everything in her need to flee. She raced to the nearest elevator and rushed in just as the doors were closing.

Maan tried to follow her but the hallways were too crowded for him to catch up. In a desperate effort to to stop her from leaving he sprinted to the stairwell and ran down the stairs as fast as he could. Upon inquiring at the front desk if Geet had left the building and being told yes, he hurried outside, calling her name and looking all around. When she was not found, he decided that she must have gotten a taxi to take her home. Calling his driver he gave instructions to be driven to Geet's home as quickly as possible. On the way, Geet's last words played over, and over again in his mind. "You must have known about this the whole time. I thought you were my friend, but you're just a thief and a lier."" Maan felt a desperate need to convince Geet that he was her friend, that he would never lie to her or cheat her.

After reaching Geet's home, Maan banged on the door and yelled Geet's name for quite a few minutes. There was no response. He considered breaking down the door, but as the neighbors were starting to get suspicious, Maan discarded that idea. Having been denied his objective of meeting Geet, Maan began to process all the things she had said earlier. How Dev was the one that betrayed her, how she had been met by the man's wife in Amritsar, how Dev had been trying to appease Naintara for some reason, which considering Dev's charm, was very strange. Maan also recalled how Dev wouldn't tell him what he had done to pay off his debts. At that point he knew without doubt that Dev was the one, that Geet had been telling the truth. As angry as Maan had ever been at Dev before, that was nothing compared to the rage he felt now.

Maan ordered his driver to take him home immediately. The ride home was intolerable. Maan could think of nothing but putting his hands around Dev's neck and squeezing. When they reached home Maan got out of the car and slammed the door so hard, if it had been a cheaper car, the glass would have shattered. Striding into the Khurana mansion, Maan enquired of the servant at the door if Dev was home. Finding that he was, Maan began yelling at the top of his lungs for Dev. Hearing him, Savitri came into the room and enquired what was the matter. Maan ignored her and again yelled for Dev. Dev and Naintara came into the room, having agreed among themselves that they would deny all Geet's accusations.

"Bhai," began Dev, only to be interrupted by a hard punch aimed straight at his face by Maan.

"You bas***d!" proclaimed Maan as he grabbed Dev and punch him again. Savitri was shocked by Maan's actions and quickly grabbed him away from Dev, as Naintara rushed to Dev's side and started helping him up. "He hasn't done anything," cried Naintara.

"Don't lie to me!"

"Maan stop this immediately. Naintara take Dev upstairs at once. Maan, Maan look at me. Stop this behavior and calmly tell me what has happend." Savitri continued trying to pull Maan further away from his brother.

"Calm! You want me to be calm? Calm when my brother, mere chote bhaiya Dev, is the man responsible for ruining Geet's life?" Maan was so upset that the only thing keeping him from pushing Savitri aside and going after Dev was the fact that she was his dadi, and he loved her.

"No, it can't be. It's not possible," claimed Savitri, unable to think that her grandson could be so low as the man who had cheated and deserted Geet without a thought.

"So you think Geet is lying?" questioned Maan angrily. "She told me so herself when they met each other at the office just now."

"I'm not saying that Geet is lying, but she has been stressed and ill. It's possible that she is confused. I just can't believe that Dev would do something so low, not without some sort of proof."

"Fine," bit out Maan as he started to exit the house. "I'll investigate the situation thoroughly, and when I've got the proof of Dev's despicable actions I will come back here and KILL HIM!"

Precap:

No precap. Instead you get an interview with the author, just like the Cv's give sometimes to keep people's interest, and assure them that things will move along.

Here is an exclusive interview with laxmi2010, author of Maaneet FF - Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Question: Why did you make Geet think that Maan was involved with Dev and Naintara? I don't want them to do this in the show.

Answer: I don't want it to happen in the show either, but I couldn't imagine Geet reacting any other way when she found out the truth accidentally. Hopefully the Cv's will come up with a better alternative.

Question: Will the misunderstanding get cleared up soon?

Answer: Yes, and no. The misunderstandings will be explained after a few more updates, but there are no guarantees about how long it will take in the story.

Question: I want Maaneet scenes together. Why have you spilt them apart?

Answer: The title of the story is Nothing Can Keep Us Apart. To show that they can not be kept apart, I have to show Maan and Geet parted, at least for a little while. It was also necessary for their character development. I promise that they will be together very soon.

Question: Will there be any romance in this story?

Answer: Of course. My intentions are to have nice doses of appropriate (meaning anyone can read, and the thread won't get locked) and at the same time, passionate romance between Maan and Geet.

Question: Can you tell about anything that has been inspiring you as you write this story?

Answer: Obviously, I am using the show as inspiration. I've also been listening to the track from the movie Delhi-6 on my ipod, along with some Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. For some reason, the songs from Delhi-6 really seem to fit the characters and situations in Geet, at least for me.

Question: Anything else you want to tell the fans?

Answer: The next few parts of the story might be slightly difficult to bear, but please keep reading. I promise that it will be worth it. I have lots of wonderful things planned for Maaneet.
