Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 5 - I thought she would have told you.

Sasha came to work extra early. She had decided to snoop around in Geet's office to see if there was anything she could find to make life miserable for Geet. Luckily Maan was not in to work yet, so there was nobody to question her as she slipped inside and began to look around. Sasha wasn't really sure what she might be able to find that would be useful, and actually Geet's office was surprisingly professional. After prowling around for a minute she went over to Geet's desk and started going through the files that were neatly stacked to one side. After a few minutes she smiled an evil smile and said to herself, "I can do something with this."

While Sasha was busy plotting, Geet was slowly making her way up the stairs to her office. She heard a ringing, and looked around to see where it was coming from. All at once she realized it was coming from her bag and reached in to take out her new phone.

"Hello," answered Geet hesitantly as she continued climbing.

"Where are you?" questioned the chirpy voice of Pinky.

"On the stairs," replied Geet. "Where are you?"

"At my desk," came the answer.

"Why are you calling me now?" queried Geet.

"Oh, I wanted to see if the phone would work in the building. So do you like it?"

"Yes, but I told you that already when you gave it to me last night."

"Well, I just wanted to be sure. It was my idea to get you a cell phone, but Adi helped me pick it out while we were at our lunch break yesterday. After work we can try out all the bells and whistles."

"That sounds like a great idea," said Geet as she snuck up behind Pinky and tapped her on the shoulder. Pinky jumped and the phone fell out of her hand. Pinky was just about to give a piece of her mind to Geet who couldn't stop herself from laughing, when Sasha marched up to the desk and started scolding Geet in a very loud voice designed to attract attention.

"Geet you have made a lot of mistakes while working here, but today you have reached the limit. These files were your responsibility. They needed to be finished by today. And are they? No. Do you have any idea what you've done? Rajkumar Ram Nihal Singh himself is coming today. THE ENTIRE REPUTATION OF THIS FIRM IS AT STAKE AND YOU'VE LET THE COMPANY DOWN WITH YOUR ACTIONS!"

Pinky had a look of shock on her face that mirrored the looks of everyone else as they watched the drama unfold. Geet in her usual innocence tried to calmly explain the situation.

"Woh Ma'am, Sir said..."

"Don't say a word about MK. Don't pretend that you care anything for him. If you did you wouldn't be slacking off on your work all the time. It was a mistake to hire you, which is what I've been saying from the beginning."

Geet started to tear up as she continued to get a tongue lashing from Sasha. At the same time Maan came walking quickly down the corridor to see what was all the commotion, an anxious Adi coming behind him. He immediately inquired of Sasha what was all the drama that was going on. Sasha continue to accuse Geet left and right while Maan listened with a look of frustration on his face. Before he had a chance to set Sasha straight a moan of pain ripped through the air. Looking passed Sasha, Maan could see Geet doubled over, clutching her stomach. She continued to moan in pain, a sound which pierced Maan's heart. Without even thinking he shoved Sasha to the side and raced over to Geet's side.

"Geet, kya hua? Kya hua, Geet? Geet!" Geet tried to speak but the pain was so intense that she couldn't. All she could do was think to herself, "My baby, my baby!"

Getting no response but more moaning from Geet, Maan gathered her in his arms and started racing towards the elevator, with Pinky running fast beside him. Sasha also started running behind them trying to convince Maan that Geet's pain was fake.

"MK, it's just an act. Don't fall for it. She's just trying to get your sympathy!"

"Sasha, shut up!" Maan gave Sasha an intense glare and then disappeared inside the waiting elevator, Pinky following him inside. Geet was still moaning, with her faced turned in toward Maan's shoulder as the elevator doors closed.

Maan stood staring at the doors that had just closed after Geet, who was rushed away by the medical personnel of the best private hospital in Delhi. A nurse was asking Maan questions that he answered robotically.

"What is the patients name?"

"Geet."

"Your name Sir?"

"Maan Singh Khurana."

While Maan stood like a statue and continued to answer, Pinky was pacing worriedly, wishing that she had her cell phone with her. Suddenly she realized that she was holding Geet's bag. Quickly rummaging around, she found Geet's new phone and pulled it out triumphantly. She quickly dialed her father's work number and started speaking rapidly when he answered.

"Papa, Geet's in the hospital! I don't know what's wrong with her. Please come right away," pleaded Pinky.

"Tell me which hospital and I'll be there immediately." Pinky breathed a sigh of relief that her father would soon be there with them. She felt very nervous when ever she looked at DD. He was prowling the hallway like an angry lion, periodically stopping to stare at the doors which Geet had disappeared behind, then he would start the whole process again.

Almost an hour had passed by the time Pinky's father joined them. Pinky ran into her father's arms and the tears that she had been holding back finally began falling. Just then one of the doctors attending Geet came out and began speaking with Maan.

"Mr. Khurana, I'm doctor Sonali Gupta."

"Doctor," responded Maan as he gave Doctor Gupta a brief hand shake, "Geet kaise hai?"

"She's fine now. I'm afraid your wife almost suffered a miscarriage, but she and the baby are stable at the moment."

"Oh, she's not... What? MISCARRIAGE?"

"Yes, but as I said she and the baby are both stable now. I think it will be best if she remains overnight for observation. We'll be moving her to a private room. Once she's settled, you'll be able to see your wife."

As Doctor Gupta walked away, Maan stood there, thinking to himself, "Geet is pregnant? Preganant!" It took a few moments for the news to sink in, but when it did he turned toward Pinky and started advancing towards her.

"You," said Maan in a deadly cold voice, pointing to Pinky. "You're friends with Geet. Where's that boyfriend of hers?"

Pinky just stared at him with her mouth opened, while her father answered, "Geet doesn't have a boyfriend. Her husband abandoned her the day after their marriage."

"How do you know that?" demanded Maan in the same cold voice he had directed toward Pinky.

"Oh, Geet's father and I are old friends. When called to tell me Geet was coming to Delhi, he told me all about how they got her married off to this NRI and then when they left for Canada he abandoned her at the airport. It's the reason that she left Hoshiarpur."

"Dad, why didn't you tell me any of this," asked Pinky.

"I thought she would have told you herself," responded her father.

While Pinky and her father continued talking about Geet, Maan just stood there, unable to process what he had just learned.
