Dance guru Terence Lewis shows us what happens when dance meets fashion as he takes us through five dance forms — from salsa to Bollywood funk, and everything else in between
HIP HOP Hip hop dressing is all about relaxed, laid-back comfort. Baggy, anti-fit three fourths and cargos teamed with loose T-shirts worn with waistcoats and accessorised with plenty of bling are characteristic of the look, where being comfortable is as important as being 'with it'. |
BOLLYWOOD FUNK
White suit by G-star at Boy London, price on request; Floral shirt by Just Cavali, price on request; White shoes by Boss Hugo Boss, price on request; Pink tinted aviators by Al's, Rs 650; silver belt , stylist's own
Colourful, flamboyant and loud. These three words best describe the look that has even inspired the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano. Single-handedly responsible for bringing white back into the Indian male's wardrobe, Bollywood will remain a timeless fashion statement.
MODERN DANCE
Checked trousers in brushed cotton by Gas, Rs 3,450; Black pin-tucked shirt by Tommy Hilfiger, price on request; White slim belt in calf leather by Zara, price on request; White tie by Zod, Rs 899; Black leather suspenders by Outfits, Rs 550
Characterised by strong, fluid lines, the Modern Dance form incorporates checked well-cut trousers and sharp shirts. Add-ons like the skinny tie and suspenders complete the dandy look.
SALSA
Black satin trousers by D&G at Escape, price on request; Striped black and white silk shirt by Zod, Rs 1,675; Red silk pochette by Zod, Rs 450; Black waist coat by Zara, price on request; Red and black belt by Zara, price on request ; Signature printed leather belt loop by Ed Hardy, Rs 3,450; textured pointed-toe shoes, Terence's own
Salsa is the Spanish word for sauce, connoting a spicy, piquant flavour. And that's just what a salsa dancer should be kitted out in—clothes that mirror the sexiness and fluidity of the dance form. Form-fitted pants and billowing sleeved-shirts worn unbuttoned at the chest lend a risqu appeal. Elements such as a slinky belt and textured pointed-toe lace-ups make super complements.
JAZZ
Black satin trousers by D&G at Escape, price on request; Faux croc gold shoes by Gucci, price on request; Signature print tie by Burberry, price on request; Velvet maroon cropped jacket and white trilby hat, Terence's own; Pink tinted aviators by Al's, Rs 650; Cane walking stick from Mohammed Ali Road.
