Ajay Devgn's all-white ensemble in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai is inspired from Amitabh Bachchan's look in Deewaar

Remember Amitabh Bachchan as the broody Vijay Verma in Deewaar? Those who can't have enough of Amitabh's strong and silent personality in the blockbuster are in for a treat albeit with a modern twist.

Though Ajay Devgn is all set to play a character inspired from the 1970s don Haji Mastan in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, fact is that Ajay's look in the film is strikingly similar to that of Amitabh Bachchan who played the angry young man in Deewaar.

A source said, "Ajay's look has been inspired from Amitabh's look in Deewaar. Almost 37 costumes and looks were rejected before the filmmakers finalised the Deewaar look for Ajay."

Director Milan Luthria said, "Yes, we scrapped many of Ajay's earlier costumes. We had initially decided to dress him like Amitji in Trishul so all the costumes were either polo necks or blazers and jackets.

But I happened to see Deewaar again, I loved Amitji's all-white look when he goes for his father's funeral in the film.

I realised that the look would work for Ajay as he looks good in white. Ajay wears white throughout the film. It gives him a different identity."

Ajay Devgn takes style tips from Amitabh Bachchan

Mumbai: Amitabh Bachchan's look in Deewar has inspired how Ajay Devgn has been styled to play the role of a gangster in Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai. Interestingly both the actors in Deewaar and the new Milan Luthria—directed movie essay the role of real life Mumbai underworld don Haji Mastan. Haji grew to become the kingpin of Mumbai's underbelly also produced a couple of Bollywood films.

A source close to the development says, "The film promises to be a super-entertaining rewind to the era of romance, smuggling, cabaret and the mafia. The film set in the 1970's sees lead actor Ajay Devgn, who plays a character much inspired by the infamous Haji Mastan, don a pure white ensemble throughout the film—inspiration of which came from Amitabh Bachchan's iconic look in Deewaar."

Milan confirms, "I have seen Deewaar and I loved Amitabh's all-white look when he went for his father's funeral in the film. I realised that the look would work for Ajay as he looks good in white. Ajay wears white throughout the film. It gives him a different identity."

After Hrs has also learnt that the team had to go through a gruelling 37 costume changes that reflected the classic style of the 1970's before settling on the 'all white' look for Ajay. The film traces the rise of Sultan (played by Ajay), and the conflict, when his protg Shoaib (Emraan Hashmi), challenges his supremacy and usurps power to rule the murky underbelly.
