Now-a-days results are published in grading system. In grading system if someone gets 80 and above he/she will get an A.So the students scoring 80 gets A while students scoring 99 also gets A.

Because of this system the students have to study less to get a good result and there is actually no difference in the result of a mediokar and a very talented student. And if a person gets 79 he will get a B and he will treated as a B grade student but the difference between him and a A grade student is just of 1 marks.
Well different countries grade in different ways. Here in our final exams, if we score say two or three percent less than the higher grade then normally they take into account performances in other exams/essays/assignments etc and can allocate a pass grace mark to achieve a higher, or they might interview students for a viva exam.

From a teacher's perspective:
a hard-working student will put in all the effort, no matter what the system is; a lazy student won't. Grades do not matter in the long run!The problem is not in the grading system but in the acceptance criteria of colleges and universities. Up until now, those who scored the highest got into the "elite" colleges (barring the ones that have their own entrance exams) and then those who graduated from these elite colleges got preference in jobs. Thus the vicious circle was formed. I must get high marks to get into a "good" college in order to secure a "good" job. I know of cases where students sacrificed their choice of subject to get into a particular college simply because of its "name". Learning can go to hell! What is required are aptitude tests, counselling/advising and shadowing in the last two years of school to help students discover what they will be good at, and what they should pursue instead of forcing them to join extra classes to prep for IIT JEE or simply to ace the board exams.

Err..from what i know, a good degree is a good degree regardless of what school they got it from...a person with a first class degree from a not so elite school would be in a higher posistion then a person with a third class degree from the elite school...degree, as well as the experience and the person's personality helps in securing a good job..its not all about A grades, being a book worm and a topper their entire life, it just shows the student is either a genius or has no life and spends the entire day studying and only studying, you need to gain experience and be social as well to build your confidence and develop yourself as a person... at the end of the day experience is given the upper hand and eventually the degree becomes nothing more than just a piece of paper.ps...From what you said that students sacrifice their choice of subject to get entrance into a better school then that just shows the student lacks the passion to study a particular subject rather has the passion to study in a particular school.Xoxo
