I do not think there is a rule that contestants who won POTD cannot be chosen for trial zone - If I remember correctly, in DID2 Terence did nominate Shakti once for kasauti round even if she won POTD that week.

anyways, to me , Neel deserved to be in trial zone - But I guess Vrushali and Mayuresh played safe -
