'Badmaashi' works!

May 12, 2010 - 08:23 IST

Finally, some good news to share. The footfalls have shown an escalation at cineplexes. First HOUSE FULL, now BADMAASH COMPANY have lured audiences back to theatres, thus ending the dry spell at the box-office. Now let's hope the forthcoming biggies [KITES, RAAJNEETI, RAAVAN] infuse oxygen in the lungs of an ailing industry.

Shahid Kapoor starrers have consistently opened well, but for some strange reason, the media never acknowledges it. KISMAT KONNECTION started very well, KAMINEY started with a bang, now BADMAASH COMPANY has proved that all he needs is the right project to hit a boundary.

A prominent director made an interesting observation on my show, a few days ago. Friday, he opined, belongs to the producer, for it's the producer who puts his hard-earned money on marketing and promotions to lure the audience to theatres. But Saturday, he quickly added, belongs to the director, who either makes or breaks a film, depending on how good or bad the film is.

If one goes by this logic/statement, both Yash Raj and debutante director Parmeet Sethi seem to have pulled it off. While the film had a healthy Friday, the business actually grew on Saturday and Sunday, which means that the word of mouth was indeed positive. Cinema is all about narrating stories and debutante director Parmeet Sethi's first endeavour seemed to have found flavour with the paying junta, if the Saturday and Sunday numbers are an indicator.

Also, Yash Raj's strategy of going all out seemed to have paid off. Unlike ROCKET SINGH - SALESMAN OF THE YEAR, which arrived without much noise whatsoever, BADMAASH COMPANY made a lot of noise prior to its release. The 'Badmaash' gang was spotted here, there, just about everywhere. Not that promotion is all-important, but it is important to be seen and heard in today's times.

A few cynics were sure that BADMAASH COMPANY would slump from Monday onwards, but the film held well on Monday and Tuesday as well. As things stand today, the film should collect approx. Rs. 20 cr. to Rs. 22 cr. nett in Week 1, which is a healthy figure. With no major opposition in the forthcoming week, Yash Raj should recover the investment from theatrical and non-theatrical avenues and also make a neat profit in the final tally.

The 'Badmaashi' has worked!

Badmaash Company has had a disappointing start in U.K. The opening weekend business of this film ranks amongst Yash Raj's lowest openers. Not just that, the screen average of Badmaash Company is lower than Shahid's last two releases Chance Pe Dance (screen average: 2,079) and even Paathshaala (screen average: 1,888). Reportedly, Badmaash Company has under-performed in America too.

Buzz up!
Last week's Housefull has witnessed a decline in business in Weekend 2 and the 10-day total from U.K., U.S.A. and Australia is approx. Rs. 9.44 crores.

Weekend: May 7 - 9, 2010.

* It's A Wonderful Afterlife (last weekend: No. 13, this weekend: No. 22): In its third weekend, the film has collected 37,347 on 53 screens, with the per screen average working out to 705. Total: 9,69,515 (approx. Rs. 6.48 crores).

recovering costs and making profits are other things....BC is still far away from being a hit, even housefull is just a semi-hit...whatever BC can make in these few days ;.. should do...coz kites is going to blow it away like a tick

Box Office: Badmash Company stocks low for Yash Raj; Housefull slides
Monday, May 10, 2010

Yash Raj Films' Badmash Company starring Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma took a subpar opening over the weekend with around 10-11 collections so far. The reports on the film are poor and so pick up is not happening. Chances overall look dim. Yash Raj banner and Aditya Chopra continue to lose steam with the Indian public. The banner once dominated the top box office grossers of each year in middle part of the last decade. 2004: Veer Zaara/Dhoom 1. 2005: Bunty & Babli. 2006: Dhoom 2. Now it'd be an accomplishment if Yash Raj films can give the top grossing film of a month.

Housefull too is on a slide. The film got a good opening over the opening weekend which lasted till mid-week. But the film has dropped by more than 60-65% in most places going into week 2. Which means it's following pattern of other Akshay Kumar starrers of the recent past, though due to the normal inflation; the figures will appear higher even though occupancies aren't. Nonetheless it can settle as top grosser so far ahead of Kites.

Kites, starring Hrithik Roshan releases on May 21. It's a crucial film for Roshan but unfortunately much delayed because the film was having trouble landing international distributors despite having been ready for launch since last year itself. Essentially the film is made for a Hollywood launch for Roshan and Hollywood buyers did not take to it as planned delaying the film. But Reliance is pumping major resources into promoting it as an international blockbuster utilizing upto their 200 theaters in US for example. A premiere at Times Square in New York was also planned before the Pakistani terror attempt being foiled there has made US security put the screws on these Bollywood premiere requests as well. Kites has been reported at $30 million (125 crore+) acquisition cost, the highest ever.

Top Box Office Hits in the history of May: Trishul, Jai Santoshi Maa, Laawaris, Zanjeer, Charas, Jaani Dushman, Biwi No. 1, Sharaabi, Mr. India, Bunty & Babli, Aap Ki Kasam, Rocky, Fanaa.

This site is the MOST unreliable site...u can ask anyone. Moreover, its been just a week. Give it a weeks time more to know the real verdict. And atleast put up updated articles. Those are 10th n 11th May articles and if you take a 11th May article, then it has been called a Hit.
