"If there is no mother, there would be no mankind."
Keeping this thought in mind, we honor our mothers every year on Mother's Day. Today is the day when children, small or big, thank their mothers for all that she's done for them. Apart from the gifts, a lot of them even have some confessions to make to their mothers.
A few Telly Stars have already revealed their confessions in an earlier feature. In our other Mother's Day offering, we salute some of the great mothers of television. Some of them have earned praise for the sheer nature of their character, some for their face-off act and others for their sincerity, longevity, and infidelity too.
This is a day for all mothers, so we're offering our respect to those mothers who either get overlooked or are long forgotten.
Laali 'Maa'
For centuries, our women have been looked upon as sex slaves. The poor Dalit girls/wives in particular was bartered to the rich landlords either to fulfill their sadistic desires or used as surrogate mothers to give birth to their heir.
Ratan Rajput, performs this role immaculately as Laali of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo. Thakur Loha Singh has gone a step ahead by accepting a Dalit woman as his daughter-in-law. So far, so good for Laali. However, reality will soon dawn upon Laali, leaving her in exile again. As per the verbal agreement, Laali will give Singh his heir and that's the end of the contract. She'll now be thrown out of the house.
Once a slave; always a slave. Three cheers for this Mother.
Baa 'Great Grand Maa'
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi may have gone off air. But one question still keeps lurking in our minds. If the show was on air today, how old would our Baa have been?
Some say 200 while some said 250. Some exaggerate the figure to 500. Well, it's difficult to gauge the exact age but what we know is the Sudha Shiv Puri thwarted any plans to die. Few months, before the show went off air, it was murmured that the creatives wanted to end Baa's character, but the grand old lady of television categorically told the producers and the channel, that she isn't going anywhere.
Serial jaye, par pran nahi! Perhaps, left with no option, the channel deemed it fit to pull off the show.
Kyunki.. may be history, but jab tak suraj chaand rahega, Baa tera naam rahega. Hats off to this eternal Maa.
Shrani 'Bin Byahi Maa'
India has evolved into a liberal country. Live-in relationships, pre-marital sex is not just confided to the urban towns, it's seeping through the rural belt too.
Pavitra Rishta is a tale of Deshmukh family, who reside in the lowly Mumbai suburb of Dombivili. The elder son, Manav, is married to Archana. However, causing havoc to their relationship is Shravani, the bossy daughter of Manav's boss. She was due to marry Manav's younger brother, Sachin, but tragedy struck when the latter passed away in accident. A few days later, Shravani stunned all by claiming that she's pregnant with Sachin's child and demanded to be married off to big brother Manav.
While she didn't elope with Manav, Shravani is staying in the Deshmukh house. There are questions over the parentage of this unborn child. However, hats off to the Deshmukh for accepting this bin byahi Maa.
Face-Off 'Maa'
Don't blame it on Ekta Kapoor, but blame director John Woo for making the film Face Off. For the first time ever, viewers got exposed to a scientific invention wherein two people could exchange each other's look. Our dear Ekta only took inspiration from Woo. However, unlike the film, Ekta was compelled to exploit the cosmetic theory.
First it was the short and fair Mandira Bedi, who under went the surgeon's knife. What came out was a tall, lanky and wheatish Achint Kaur. Now this doctor deserves a Nobel prize for science.
Similarly, a plum Smriti Iraani vanished from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Few months later, a skinny Gautami Kapoor jumped into the Virani household, claiming to be their bahu Tulsi. Six months later, Smriti patched up Ekta as the latter brought her back as Tulsi. Poor Gautami was shown as an imposter. Out went Gautami, but Kyunki,.. wasn't for long either.
Hats off to cosmetic surgeons and to our face-off Mothers.
Rakhi ki 'Maa'
Whatever the differences may be, it was shameful on Rakhi's part to not invite her family members for her fake engagement to Elesh Parjunwala.
For many years, hassled critics wished for Rakhi's mother to just disappear overnight. However, a lot of them had a change of heart after watching the equally hassled Mrs. Sawant on Bigg Boss. Through her week long duration in Bigg Boss house, a tearful Jaya Sawant narrated about her soured equation with her daughter. She blamed Rakhi's ex-flame Abhishek Avasthi for causing the divide, yet sought forgiveness from her daughter.
Few weeks later, Rakhi did forgive her mother. Perhaps, one must thank Bigg Boss for this mother-daughter reunion. All we'll say is, "Jesus, is Maa ko aashish do."
Geeta Maa
Till date, she's unmarried, and if gossip mongers are to be believed, Geeta Kapoor is a virgin too.
Well, let's not get there. For us, it's surprising that such a lady has been given the title of Geeta Maa on Dance India Dance. As a choreographer she's entitled to be called as Madame Geeta or woman grandmaster. Maa is a little farfetched. Perhaps, Kapoor too must be a little embarrassed.
Well, this is Dance India Dance and out here, the teachers are put on same pedestal as parents. However, neither Terence nor Remo are called Paa. Anyway, hats off to Geeta Maa.
