Then there was this Byomkesh Bakshi - which actually instilled interest in crime and investigation in my mind. It was very simple and only used logic. No forensic, nothing. The stories were set in pre-independence days and Byomkesh used to wear a simple Dhoti-Kurta 😆 and we had no complaints about his wardrobe those days. I loved one of the episodes where a cyclist used to commit murders by fixing a pin inside the cycle bell. He used to ride past the victim, and ring the bell when he was close enough to the victim and the pin used to go pierce the heart. They had great ideas those days.
Yeah I was BIG BIG fan of SATYANVESHI aka Byomkesh Bakshi. Rajat Kapoor just won us over with his first appearence. He was awesome. His not-so-sharp friend Ajit played by K.K. Raina was such a sweet character. (where are these actors yaar) Inspite of BB being a detective series I can see it over and over and over again. The level of acting, the mystery, the direction, it was just awesome. No forensic, no nothing pure intelligence. I remember the case you mentioned very well. One of my favorite cases has was about the Neelam Diamond robbery and if I am right it had Utpal Dutt playing an important character. Another one was about how a paralyzed man managed to do nasha of spider poison inspite of this family constantly keeping a watch on him.
And what can I say about circus??? One episode I remember was the one where Ashutosh Gowarikar had to shoot as a duplicate(stuntman) for a film hero and he was asked to do the trapeze without a net at the bottom. He accepts the challenge, but when he actually goes to the top and looks down and finds no net, he becomes extremely nervous. But he decides to do it at the cost of risking his life as he is a big fan of that actor. I remember how scared I was while watching that scene. I've seen it only once, but still remember this episode well. I loved Ashutosh right from those days...and that's why I loved Viren as well in CID.
Yeah Every episode had something to learn from, to take back something good. My favorite episode is when everyone from the circus is behind Shekharan aka SRK back because a baby elephant is not well.
And speaking of Ashutosh - anyone remembers his lifebuoy ad on DD? He offers to drop his GF home and she looks at him and closes her nose and says 'Phir Kabhie'. Next day he bathes with lifebuoy and she agrees to take a lift from him. Very sweet ad.😆
