Sandiip Sikcand, Balaji's creative head for shows like Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii, K Street Pali Hill, Kasamh Se and the soon-to-be-launched Kandy Floss, turned rescuer late. While returning home early on Tuesday morning, Sandiip's car ran over a stray dog, resulting in high drama.

After-work ritual
"I was on the way back home to Bandra from the Balaji office in Andheri on Tuesday, at around 3 am," says Sikcand. "Whatever time I finish work, I always end my day with a visit to Mount Mary. I spend a few quiet moments there and then go home."
However, Sikcand's daily visit to the church was stopped mid-way when a stray dog suddenly dashed in front of his car.

"The driver was at the wheel and we were almost at the end of Hill Road. The dog just appeared out of the blue. Before the driver could brake, we heard the animal barking loudly. It was too late — the car had run over its leg."
Instead of speeding off, Sikcand halted the car to check the dog's condition. "There was blood all over his leg, and it couldn't even lift itself up. It was in agony, and just kept barking and rolling on the road," he says.
Rushed to vet hospital
Animal lover Sikcand swung into action. "I was aware of the organisation called People for Animals. I immediately called them and asked what I should do. They told me to rush to the Bai Sakerbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals, in Parel."
Placing the dog in the car was another ordeal, as the animal was writhing in pain by then. "There were some newspapers in the car. We laid them out in the dickey, gently lifted the dog on to the newspapers, and rushed to the hospital. The vet there immediately tended to the dog, which was okay. I was told to let him be in the hospital for some days."
How PFA works
Adds Dharmesh Solanki, managing trustee, People For Animals, "When Sandiip called us, it was too late in the night. We requested him to bring the dog over to the hospital at Parel. He is being taken care of and is on the road to recovery.
Maneka Gandhi's People For Animals has a team of vets that renders first aid to animals, besides treating them. They also conduct sterilisation drives for stray dogs. "Our activities are funded by animal lovers," says Solanki.
As for the dog's condition, Solanki informs, "The dog experienced pain in another leg yesterday. X-rays revealed a slight injury, and treatment is on. But the animal will recover soon."
