| 1) Tell us something about salsa. What is the difference between L.A salsa and Cuban salsa?
SANDIP:Salsa is a Latin American Folk dance. It is a dance depending upon the mood, can be fast, slow, it can be romantic, sensuous. It is what you want it to be. L.A is a simpler version of Cuban Salsa. Now there are many other forms of Salsa like, New York, Puerto Rican, Bollywood Salsa, etc. Cuban is the mother of all salsa. In Cuban you break on two and L.A. you break on one.
2) Why did you choose dance?
SANDIP: Because I had nothing else to do (he laughs). Honestly dance makes me happy. I have done my M.B.A, hotel management, worked for a PR company, but the happiness was never there. I was not convinced and satisfied. Dance gives me sheer joy and therefore I chose dance.
3) What role are you playing in DID little masters?
SANDIP: Cant talk about it now' You will have to wait' keep watching DID..
4) Comment on Dance India Dance.
SANDIP: I think it's a genuine platform for the young talent. Now that I am a part of I know the inside story. We are taking talent from really small towns of India, giving them a platform to showcase their talent. Dance India Dance shows everything related to dance, the new dance forms, Indian and International. Some dance reality shows are not genuine and they play these internal games, politics and everything is a set up. But DID is an honest dance competition and I am glad to be a part of it.
5) Who is your favorite dancer in Bollywood and Hollywood?
SANDIP: I have recently choreographed for the movie Kites. Therefore I would say that my favorite dancer in Bollywood is Hrithik Roshan. He is very talented, focused and open to learning the new styles. I have also choreographed for Rob Marshall's movie NINE and I think that Penelope Cruz is extremely sensuous and expressive and that's what is important in films.
6) How long does it take to master any Latin American form?
SANDIP:Depends upon how dedicated you are, how aware are you of your own self? Keeping all this in mind I think it takes at least 10 years to master a Latin American form but I would repeat again that it depends upon your ability and your focus and dedication. Don't come to me saying that I have done Cha Cha Cha for 12 years now and I haven't yet mastered it. That is because you were not focused and serious.
7) If you just had one night to stay alive, whom would you have your last dance with and why?
SANDIP: Of course with my wife! She is the most beautiful women on earth for me' I have all my dances with her whether first or last. However, due to her recent injury at her kick boxing class, I am not able to dance with her. She has injured her quadriceps.
8) Dance- Passion or Profession. Comment.
SANDIP: Of course Passion! I am lucky that my passion is my profession now. I was telling my manager the other day that if someone is passionate enough to learn dance then we should make arrangements for them. This is how we can spread the joy of dance even to those who are not from the well-to-do families.
9) You are known for Salsa. Do you wish to try other dance styles?
SANDIP: It is very sad that I am only know for Salsa, whereas I am trained in many other Latin American forms and I do teach all these styles. However, in our country any couple dancing is known as Salsa. This is because people are not well informed about the Latin forms. I would love to learn all the Indian classical forms, especially Kathakali as I am very fond of the extravagant costumes and high costume drama. Indian classical forms are so beautiful, graceful and expressive.
10) How does it feel when you see any Latin American form for example Paso Doble, Cha Cha Cha, Waltz, etc. done wrongly on Indian reality shows? Since the contestants are not trained and they attempt a new form in a week but obviously you can see on the screen that there are technical errors. Do you get upset?
SANDIP: I dont get upset. I get mixed feelings. I am happy that people get to see the new dance forms and due to that awareness is created but when it is performed with so many technical errors then I get a little disappointed.
11) What advise would you like to give the young aspirants?
SANDIP: If you know what you want in life then just go and get it. There are many dancers who come to me and say that they had learnt jazz, contemporary, hip hop, etc. but know nothing properly. Experience all the forms, then choose which one is your favorite and focus on mastering that particular style. Just work hard, keep dancing, it is never too late. I still dance'.
