The Truth, the whole truth

And nothing but the truth. Sure, you have no means of verifying the veracity of my statements, but why would I go to extraordinary lengths to conjure this? If there is a post where one provides an introduction, I do not know, so I take the liberty to do that here.

While now in my dotage, I do not need to, nor will take lip lying down it's a mode in which I do not especially like to operate and it gives me little pleasure to participate in bouts of verbal fisticuffs. Hence, I reveal just a small part of where my interests lie (more only on as as-needed basis, if I even continue here) in the hopes of a truce. I cannot imagine 'who the hell is she' hasn't crossed your minds.

If you're nice, MK might tell you all of this ...

That is what fuelled my interest in biology on a large scale (if only I had shown such enthusiasm during my undergrad years) including neuroscience and its offshoots such as neurophilosophy (hence that other quip). I've always been a voracious reader of many things (including, like any woman worth her salt - fashion). I read not serially but in parallel and am currently wading through a couple of books on neuroscience that deal with an understanding of the components and basis of consciousness; and one on evolutionary biology.

As you see, I cannot write in sound-bites. I have absolutely not set out to expressly hurt feelings with what I say. I have some to offer and a whole lot more to learn.

Obviously you are well read and doing well in life. That's no mean achievement. You should be proud of yourself and I am sure your people are proud of you.

If I were you I would survey the field to see if there is anybody around who could potentially be on the same page with me. If I don't find anybody, I would be left with two options
a) Speak to the others in their language, even if it means watering down my words and thought processes to their plateau (I am not saying higher or lower, just a different plateau)
b) move on.

If you go with the first option, then be prepared as some members get chatty and some replies go off in tangents while some even seem completely disconnected. It's very likely that you won't always find yourself engaging others in a meaningful, purposeful debate.

Finally, if you don't mind my saying so: being loquacious is one thing. Being discourteous when others are sincerely inquiring as to what exactly you want to talk about given the multitude of sub-topics that seem to be generously peppered through out your posts is another.

Good luck!

Thanks Mister K.

I am on this one. The problem is not me not interested to discuss what SVale is all up for. The problem is that I do not UNDERSTAND almost all parts of it.

It'd be nice participating in something I understand. Worry is, I've not got a head or tail of the last two topics you posted Vale. And since I cannot understand, I cannot participate! 😕

Indeed, the options are not multifold. You may consider me to as yet be reconnoitering because the responses have oscillated between the reasonably meaningful to needlessly insolent. The latter appears to be the modus operandi across forums on IF which is unfortunate because, equally unfortunately, I can dish out pretty good ... I can take it as well if it's warranted ...
It's very likely that you won't always find yourself engaging others in a meaningful, purposeful debate.
And that's a prefectly acceptable state of affairs ...
Being discourteous when others are sincerely inquiring as to what exactly you want to talk about given the multitude of sub-topics that seem to be generously peppered through out your posts is another.
Mister K. please do me the courtesy of pointing out where I have flagrantly been rude - without cause? The first time I sneered was because I felt that the post (something about money and true happiness) had been shanghaied leaving the poor originator out in the cold. That is just plain not nice. So when one fellow came back and demanded an explanation & asserted that I did not know my behind from a hole in the ground, I gave it to him - the explanation and the chastising (while he had no way of knowing, I was playing the age card insofar as the tongue lashing was concerned).
My recollection is that in your case - admittedly with some ire because you were equally discourteous - I offered to regale you on any topic of your choice. My recollection also is that you demurred in rather haughty tones. I don't believe I misconstrued in considering your inquiries insincere.
I am still open to pursuing a subject of your choosing from among the sub-topics that season my posts. Not wanting to do so is your prerogative and I don't have a problem with that.
And since I cannot understand, I cannot participate!
I think that is true of most people (me included on issues in which I am not conversant) ... Last 2 topics ... hmmmm ... lemme see, I assume you are referring to the one about Tharoor and the one about calls of nature ...
OK ... I thought the Tharoor one to not be especially obtuse so you'll have to tell me what about that was impenetrable.
With regard to this last one, here's a synopsis:
I was musing about the fact that thanks to the artificial demands of 'culture' when some very basic human instincts - because of our biology - are suppressed, we end up with extremely aberrant behavior. The instinct to which I referred was human sexuality. The reason I highlighted this was because all of a sudden we appeared to be drowning in cases of: child molestation (specifically the Roman Catholic Church); 'unnatural sex' (in the case of this Swami Nithyananda fellow who I don't know from Adam); and flat out bizarre in the case of a certain strain of Islam.
I then connected that to where/how/why cultures are so forbidding of this natural need by quoting from a book that I had only just finished reading. As luck would have it, this particular essay was especially pertinent. The author - for obvious reasons - is an academic of the first order. He teaches at Stanford University (which is considered the Harvard of the US "West Coast"), has done original research in the area of neurology and biology, and 'peppers' his writings with subtle, zany humor (that tickles me no end).
So, tell me what interests you ... after all I cannot introduce a subject unless I get a feel for where peoples' interests lie ... I don't however, want to get bogged down in issues that relate exclusively to India ... besides, how is broadening one's horizons a bad thing?

I understand what you are saying. But once you assume command of your ship (or a thread that you originated, in this case), you should be prepared to steer it to safety even in the face of rough weather, rough seas, icebergs and pirate attacks. How you do it is up to you.

It's not important who said what. It's a virtual world so who cares, right?! The ones who pissed you off won't exactly be dining with you, that's for sure.

I don't know about you but if it's terribly important for me to have a good debate with others I would probably turn a blind eye to a couple of "miscreants" and trust that the mods will jump in, if need be. But otherwise, if you make a point the right way, I do know a bunch of people here on DM who could satisfy your appetite for a fulfilling discussion. Count me out of that group though, I have other interests. I would chip in with my views once in a while (depending on how strongly I feel bout the topic) but that's about it.

Lastly, I would like to point out that, and you will have to excuse me for saying this, the verbosity of your replies is probably putting people off. So, as an analogy, if I decide to go to the beach, I wouldn't be wearing my 3 piece vested suit. I would reserve it for special occasions.

Hello SValeCalGal thanks for sticking around.
Sometimes I do enjoy watching your fireworks display and the adrenelin that flows along with it. If not for you Mr K would have gone into hiatus.😆
I doubt you are unfamiliar to us but it does not matter.
Impressive background.

Oh Really? It is not exactly Rocket science you know. 😉
While I do not venture to doubt sincerity of your interest in interacting with decent forum members here I am stupefied by what you just asked up there...especially after having proclaimed one too many times your feelings about the members and discussions.
So if you want your writings to be read go get them printed.!

No matter how rich your vocabulary is, if you cant communicate your writings to the other members , then it's like the gold chest that's hidden in the house (or should I say abode) of Homer Simpson.

anyway , I like your writing style a lot :)

you should be prepared to steer it to safety even in the face of rough weather, rough seas, icebergs and pirate attacks.
MK - I am prepared to be 'commander' ... and brave the elements ... in this case opposing views, alternate views, inclined views, orthogonal views, upside-down views, oblique views ... I will however, under no circumstances, abide insolence ... sorry, don't need that at my age ... so, if you give me the impression that you are cruisin' for a bruisin' then a bruisin' you is gonna get ... I guess that counts as hacking the pirates ...
It's a virtual world so who cares, right?!
Well ... that's an interesting premise ... I believe a lot of uncivility exists precisely because of the anonymity that the Internet provides ... certainly, compared to other sites, most people here are paragons of virtue ... nevertheless, name calling is a no-no in my books (the fellow who had the temerity to call me a 'fool' was one who was decidedly asking for a hiding ).
I would probably turn a blind eye to a couple of "miscreants"
There's flavors of miscreants ... some make you roll your eyes ... and some make you puke ... take 'my_view' below as an example ... I think I was posing the question to the other member but here he/she is being very clever (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) ... I'm rolling my eyes ...
trust that the mods will jump in, if need be
NOOOOOOOO!!!! Puleeze!!!! Any number of us are absolutely nauseated by moderator shenanigans! The ones I have come across have serious problems understanding much of anything ...
the verbosity of your replies is probably putting people off
This is exceedingly astounding! That one truncate responses for fear of offending ... the length, breadth, depth is surely a matter of style and the subject under discussion ... is there a standard here that I am not conforming to ... or even have to conform to? You don't strike me as a fellow of few words (and that's a mighty good thing).
As for your analogy, MK, special ocassions are routinely held on beaches - weddings in Hawaii are the thing! The couple show up in their best ... many times in exhorbitantly expensive duds ...
****************************************
Sometimes I do enjoy watching your fireworks display and the adrenelin that flows along with it.
Only sometimes?!! And whose adrenalin are you referring to? Your's or mine? 😊
If not for you Mr K would have gone into hiatus
Why I'm glad that MK ain't yet in mothballs ... nasty things mothballs (especially for the moths) ...
I doubt you are unfamiliar to us but it does not matter.
You've piqued my curiosity ... tell me more ... have we 'met' before? Don't be bashful ...
**************************************************
one too many times your feelings about the members and discussions
One too many times? On this forum?! I remember saying that 'based on what little I had seen, I wasn't thunderstruck' ... as for expressing my 'feelings' about the members, dear, please go back and examine the nature of that which elicited the responses you allude to ...
On the other suggestion: would it interest you to know that one person actually printed my stuff (from another forum) and took some of the 200 odd pages on a flight to keep her in stitches (I thought it a real waste for her to destroy a forest) ... and another has asked that I create a diary ... we thought my musings would appear under the title 'The Serial Killers' - to pay 'homage' to the manque writers of the tripe that is served up ... so completely bereft of imagination ...
