@ Dabulls: I get what you are saying. But honestly even I didn't like the rumba at all.
See it's not about simply learning the steps and dancing to it. It's not even about getting the steps perfectly right. It's about the FEEL of the dance, and your passion, your love for dance shining out when you get on stage. That's what makes me fall in love with a particular dance performance!
This season we did have some amazing contestants like Parvez, Kruti, Amrita and Amar. Who when they danced, you could SEE their love and passion for dance on stage. But sadly none of them made it to the finals. That's whats missing, atleast to me in these performances.
They're too mundane. Too lifeless! Honestly all of the remaining contestants are not that great for me. I just don't see anything extraordinary about any of them. They're all just average dancers in the world where millions of awesome dancers exist. People say that Dharmesh is overhyped. Honestly I find Shakti overhyped as well. I really don't see anything that great in her. While she is awesome at contemporary she just looks too awkward in any of the other styles she attempts. It's about naturally fitting into the other styles of dance regardless of whether you do the moves right or not.
Like last year we had Vrushali who was only trained in classical dance. Still she attempted contemporary, tango, jazz, broadway, salsa, hip hop, tribal dance etc. And she was amazing!! It was a pleasure watching her because even though she might not have done all the steps perfectly, she added her own magic and personality to all the dances. That's what made her stand out from the others. That's why she was amazing! It's not about training etc., well it's true that you must have polishing and training in order to be a great dancer, you do need natural talent as well. And natural talent can make a dancer versatile. That and the passion to learn any form of dance can make you LIVE into any other style of dance. Which sadly I don't see in Shakti, Dharmesh, Punit or Binny.
SImilarily, contestants like Mayuresh, Jai, Alisha and Siddesh (and Vrushali as previously mentioned) were SO inspiring and amazing to watch last year because their love for dance shined on stage. Their willingness to accept and learn any form of dance was apparent. Which made their performances amazing to watch despite all of them not being trained in that particular style.
However, sadly none of these contestants currently present in the final are that impressive. Even the ones that were awesome this season didn't get this far which is really unfortunate.
And it sucks because India's audience is actually accepting and encouraging all these average dancers instead of bringing up the awesome ones! I see what you're saying about appreciating their talent, but it is this blind appreciation that's causing the good contestants to not get as far whereas overhyped and average contestants to climb up.
Criticism is important in order for improvement. Shakti is really lucky to have Terrence as a mentor who has succeeded in bringing out the best in her and helping her with expressions and all. Had she had any other mentor, it would've been obvious how average she really is.
Also, there are dancers in India as well who have had training from an early age. Anyone who has been trainined in classical dancing has to have had that training from an early age. India does have many opportunities to learn classical dancing as well. It is really unfortunate that those trained in classical are usually the ones to get eliminated early on. So classical training again there is discouraged!
So what I mean is, if we keep encouraging and appreciating average dances such as these, we're never going to get them to improve. To strive for more, give their best. People like Dharmesh, Shakti, Punit and Binny are appreciated no matter how average their performances are! How is that fair??
Even people who ARE improving and striving to be better get eliminated! For example Amar and Jack were both improving so much! Whereas all the people currently in the finals have pretty much stayed at the same level or gone down.
Again, I don't see why we should appreciate this and not give these contestants to work on being better. And DID is a platform to LEARN. It's not a platform to keep doing what you're best at already. It's to learn and show your love for dance to the world.
Sorry for the super long post, but I hope you see what I'm trying to say and why I'm so fed up of season 2 this year.
