S-E-L should deliver more classical tune

I don't get very surprised to see that Shankar-Ehsaan_Loy's music is dominated by bass drones, heavy rhythm & electronic effect of Keyoards. Loy is a Keyboarder & Ehsaan is a bass guitarist, it is natural that their music would be influenced by heavy instrumental flavour.
In fact if one listens to their compositions carefully it would be found that they have a special liking for miscellaneous guitar effects.
But I do get surprised by relative lack of Carnatic & Hindustani classical in their music. I agree that their music is entertaining and much better than few others but I expect more.
Because of the fact that Shankar Mahadevan has been a part of Shakti which revolutionised the fusion music. Besides, Shankar is known to have good command over both Hindustani & Carnatic classical. He is also a prolific player of Veena, all the more reason to expect more...!
I maintain that while composing a musician is influenced by three factors:

1. Market pressure: which includes taste of people
2. Composer's own capability: acc. to his training & exposure
3. Film situation's demands.

Two names leap to my memory from Golden era music who were known not to change tunes acc. to demand of film director : Sajjad Hussain & S D Burman. In fact S D Burman was reluctant to change the tune of a song of Aradhana which was based on a Rabiindra Sangeet and was not fitting the situation: Kishoreda salvaged the situation and song which finally came to us was Roop Tera Mastana....!! ( courtsey ms04)

IMHO S-E-L is one bunch of composer which can deliver much more classical tunes ( because of Shankar) than they are doing and then can present it in a more acceptable format ( due to Ehsaan & Loy).
Any taker........??

Excellent post again, keep up the good work

they might move towards more classical music, only if the group breaks up and Shankar is the composer(and looking at the new trend in bollywood, that might happen)

But I am happy with the music they compose, if something is not broken why fix it?

Atleast they are not repitative

At the risk of getting hammered Im saying that mega success of ARR have forced many composers to make music on his line.
Some of the overdrive guitar effects SEL use, were first used by ARR...but that is acceptable.
Hmmm I'll share an interesting story.
ID was asked by SLB to come to studio with some of his compositions when he was looking for a composer for HDDCS.
On listening to ID's music, SLB said: you sound very much like ARR I want ID's music only, then he changed his style and then we know the rest of the story....

Wow! Good post Sinhaji 👏 👏 👏
yes, I think they can do much much better. But as you have said the market expectation and situation maybe bogging them down. Plus they were iniially trying to make a place for themselves. But now that they have established , I think they may experiment.infact they should, we expect that from Shankar. But they are definitely better than many of today's mds.

I agree, but I dont think (EL) part of S-E-L would agree, if they do, Shankar becomes a lead. It might be more of a control issue, yes they have the tools and now they can afford to experiment, but the principles in the group should be flexible for one of them to take charge, and I dont see it happening, considering Shankar seems to be a very soft spoken, non-dominating person, I am just going on the demenour I see on TV and in interviews( but that is just one persons interpretation of what he sees on TV, so take it for what it is worth😉)

agree mp agree.
BTW Rajkapoor, Dev Anand, Subhash Ghai and some other film directors are known to sit in recording studio till they got a song of their choice.
It often lead to people getting fantastic songs but I often think from perspective of composers eg Ravindra Jain : Ive read that Raj Kappor saab rejected many of his tunes till he got one of his choice, isn't this possible thta Ravindra Jain might have made a better tune originally...!
err........only thinking aloud...........

That is the difference bet composer and a film maker. A film maker sees songs as a medium to tell his story less and sell his film more. But certainly not to showcase the composer's talent or taste. And a composer will anytime want to compose song to the best of his ability. A golden point will be where both meet. So many have achieved that ,hence we have so many unforgettable songs.
