Found this bit on this amazing artist. Dont know how old this is. Does anyone know about his latest achievements? Pls. contribute if you do.

Mohammad Vakil belongs to the exclusive club of 'young classical singers'. Recently, he was the winner of the musical show Sa Re Ga Ma and the older generation heaved a sigh of relief. Young people can sing classical music after all, they said. SO flawless was his voice that Magnasound signed him and released his first album Kasak.

The album helped Vakil display his talent and carves a niche for himself as a serious singer. He hopes to further consolidate his position with his recent album Keh Do Keh Do.

Vakil comes from a musical family. His uncles were, Ustad Ahmed Hussain and Ustad Mohammed Hussain were renowned classical musicians. They have composed the music for Keh Do Keh Do too. For him, it was dream come true since they are famous ghazal singers and have to their credit nearly 50 ghazal albums. Vakil learnt music from them and to have his gurus composing music for his own album was an overwhelming experience.

Working on the album was an exhilarating experience. However, Vakil had to ensure that the lyrics were good and that his singing was truly good. He says that the title song penned by the late Hasrat Jaipuri captured the true spirit of love. Apart from the title song, Jaipuri also penned Sambhal ke chal and Tere shaher chala hoon, just five days before his death. One of the leading actors in television, Amar Upadhyay, features in the video of the album. The album took four months to complete and will appeal to all classes of people.

Vakil feels that his situation is somewhat similar to Hariharan's who was branded as a serious ghazal singer before A.R. Rahman gave him a break. Vakil hopes that he too will find a composer who will help him prove his versatility.

Vakil, in spite of his chocolate boy looks, reminds one of the late renowned singer Mohammed Rafi. In fact, Rafi is Vakil's idol and as a boy, Vakil was in awe of him. So does Vakil have any dreams of singing in films. Yes, he does. He would love to sing for Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit, Ismail Darbar, A.R. Rahman… the list goes on.

As a classical singer, does he look down upon playback singing? Vakil feels that some classical musicians may feel that way but he would love to sing in films. He also feels that films will be the ideal platform to showcase his versatility. His single-minded devotion to music and his goal-oriented nature are what make Vakil stand apart. Here's wishing him a successful career

Abhi,
did you notice how the seekha hua singers seem to be so humble
Nihira, Hema, Md. Vakil, Bela etc. I think it comes from that teaching. My hats off to them.

These people are blessed to have this gift and they know it. It comes from that realization and also their awareness of how much more there is to learn.
I really do want to know of Mohd. Vakil's current activities. He is too good to be hidden away.

Sad state of affairs. I am sure he must be performing all over the world. If someone can tell of his programs, please let me know. I know he sang a bit in Veer Zaara.

I absolutely loved mohd vakil. But there are two problems associated with this..
First, Old saregama format never did anything extra ordinary to promote singers. kunal ganjawala, sanjeevani, bela, shreya , they all got a platform to display the talent but never any publicity. And it took a long time for them to make their mark in the industry. Kunal participated in 1997 first but he got the first hit in 2002, and it took an ARR to launch him big time. They had to struggle on their own. Now, its a different story, Zee and sony are hell bent on making bathroom singers like vinit and abhijeet sawant a bigger star. While so many other much more talented singers in saregama(pa) could never go further.

Second, Mohd vakil will need a really courageous music director like ID or ARR to change his genre completely, as vakil is capable of singing melodies too. Otherwise there is a little chance for any ghazal singer to survive in bollywood, and in filmi ghazals as long as jagjit singh is there, there is no scope for anyone else.

Vakil was the winner of that famous mega finals where his rival was Parthiv Gohil.Bela won at the same finals.Pt Jasraj, late Anil Biswas,Khayyam,Late Raj Kumari,OP Nayyar,Jagjit Sing were among the galaxy of judges. The program was spread over 3 episodes.
Gone are those dsays and gone are most of those singers-unsung and unremembered.

True MS04ji. That is why when people say Vinit will become a star or Debo will become a star, I have my doubts. Singers like Sadhna Sargam, Devaki Pandit or Sonali bajpai are not able to get many songs where will a Himani or Ujjaini fit in? There are so many like them.

For that matter, where is Bela? She had one of the best voices. Last I heard she was singing some remix albums.

thanks for sharing this article Raghav ji...
I used to love Mohd Vakil's voice. Like ms04 ji says, hopefully a MD will give him the big break he deserves...
Also, didn't Shekhar of Vishal-Shekhar fame sing in SRGM too (or maybe I'm getting confused with some other MD duo)...
