With You ...
There is nothing but the rain
No foot steps on the ground
I'm listening but there is no sound
Isn't anyone trying to find me...
Won't somebody come take me home
Trying to figure out this life...
Won't you take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new...
Sitting far in the corner, on the cold marble floor, she clutched to her knees as if trying to hold her self. Her body shuddered and continuously rocked back and forth on its own to provide some heat. The room was fiercely cold as strong winds kept gushing in from the opened windows…she still remained in the same position. Just like she couldn't stop him from barging into her life and eventually came in terms with it, accepting it as fate, she also let that breeze barge in carelessly. Does it even matter? When the lights didn't seem to brighten the darkness of her room, then how will stopping this wind from rushing in would cease the coldness… She seemed cold and paler than before… she felt her soul surrounded by darkness each time she gets reminded of him. He was the sole reason for everything going wrong with her. Everything. All he gave her were painful memories. Soon, her eyes let out hot tears but she barely felt anything as they quickly slid down her face. She was still cold, inside and out.

He gazed out of the terrace, trying to find something to distract him and get away from the guilt chasing him. The noise of the bustling traffic didn't seem to help either…instead he heard her faint cries from far. He closed his eyes in an attempt to get away but only to face her pain stricken face and timid figure… completely tired and worn out, unable to counter anything. He clutched onto the railing and pressed hard as if trying to relieve his anger. Was it really his fault if she was hurt? She asked for it. He wasn't to be blamed….why should he be sorry for any of that happened a few days ago and repeated again just a few hours before. Only if she didn't added fuel to the lava ready to erupt inside him… He wouldn't have done anything ….only if he controlled his anger….only if she tried to understand him instead….only if…
"Ahh!", Krishna winced as his head spinned from all the thoughts…
He wanted to run away far from the place….he wanted peace. Just as he was about to storm abruptly out of the house, he heard a loud noise in the background. Something had fallen apart … Recluctantly, Krishna made his way towards the room where the noise seemed to have come from. The flower vase had somehow broken with chunks of it scattered over the floor. His eyes ran down to notice half of it lay on Pratigya's feet. She was sitting right beside the corner. It didn't look like she even knew what had happened; her tear dried face was devoid of any emotion. She rocked back and forth continuously and was shaking involuntarily. Krishna heaved a long sigh and made his way towards her.
************
"Here.", Krishna handed her the first-aid box, "do some bandage on your foot…it's still bleeding".
She closed her eyes….what the hell would he know. How would he even know… all he sees is this physical pain and that's how shallow he is. What else can one expect…
He would never realize the emotional trauma he has caused her till now.
"If you're thinking that I'll keep on standing here with this box in my hand and wait for his highness to take it, then you're wrong!", his sarcasm filled reply got her to open her eyes again and face the dreadful glare he gave her. "Do the bandage if you wish or let it bleed all you want. I don't care", he threw the box beside her and left the room in a quick stride.
"I hate you, Krishna!", she muttered to herself and silently took the first aid box.

Krishna sat on the arm chair and closely observed her sleeping. She would toss and turn numerous times and grasp for breath every once in a while—all of it indicating the many levels her body and soul were disturbed at. He made a disgusted face and looked out of the window at the full white moon. He admitted to himself that he hated seeing her in a miserable condition. It pierced through him…
Just a couple of days ago they had gotten married. However, from day one of their marriage, things didn't go the way he had imagined. She openly claimed to not even like him and that was the first time he touched to hit her….almost. But today he had even crossed that limit and had gone further, nearly strangling her. Not in his wildest dreams he thought that he would go on to show such an abusive behaviour and that too with a delicate being like her. Why did he reflect his force upon her? Why such a cowardly act? Just because she is a girl and he is a guy? How can he be so violent….
He got up and slowly walked towards her. After pulling on the blanket over her, he gently stroked her hair. His eyes fell upon the red imprint his fingers had left on her milky skin.. Without being aware, he slightly touched the mark on her neck. Pratigya hissed lightly and moved by the tingling pain it caused. He was briefly held with a feeling of regret …
"I'm sorry, Pratigya…", the words escaped his mouth naively as he bent over and kissed her forehead. She was his wife. It was his duty to protect her but instead, he was the one causing her pain. How could he….

The night passed away at its own usual pace but for him it was one of the longest nights he had spent, staying awake and thinking of his acts all over again. He never knew he could be so ruthless to his own wife that he claimed to love so much….sure her words did hit him hard but how does it justify his brutal actions…
In a few minutes, the sun was up and bright rays entered their room, lightening each corner. He rubbed his eyes and yawned. Although he felt tired, a faint smile was playing on his lips. After spending so much time thinking on his own, he had finally arrived to a conclusion and it was time he discuss it with his wife. And he exactly knew how to do it …. no more spur-of-the-moment actions or rushed decisions; this once he wanted everything to go smoothly.

"Stay here. I have brought the breakfast with me" Krishna told her as he saw her getting ready to go downstairs for the breakfast and the usual greeting session to his family. She stopped midway to see him struggling with the food plates in his hands. Pratigya was taken aback, baffled to say the least. She stared at him for a bit as he set the plates on the table …she tried to decipher him; 'He must want some favour from me', was the most probable justification she came up with this unpredictable change in him.
"Come already! I'm starving!", Krishna's voice disrupted her thoughts. She shook her head and robotically followed him to the table.
They ate in audible silence but both of their minds were booming loud with questions. Here she was wondering what this new situation had in store for her…was it a new way for him to take revenge on her for not having the same feelings for him? Would he hurt her again?
On the other end, Krishna was searching for ways to start the conversation … How should I explain this? I hope I don't ruin it and control my reactions…would she understand my point of view?
He cleared his throat to get her attention… "ahem"…
Pratigya purposely ignored it as she collected the plates to head out for the kitchen. "I want to talk to you…where are you going?", Krishna called her back. When she ignored him once more, he hastily got up and held her back by her arm.
"Sit", he ordered. She glared at him in annoyance and signaled him to leave her hand. He smirked childishly and grabbed the plates from her and made her sit on the bed side, while maintaining his strong hold on her.
Krishna stared in space for a few seconds thinking how hard it was for him to say the three words in full consciousness, "Look…I-I…ughh…okay I'm sorry, Pratigya. Whatever happened yesterday and before that…it shouldn't have taken place. I think I over reacted. But your words were spiteful…", he paused hearing her laugh at his last words.
She held her stomach and stopped, "If a mere reality check was so hurtful to you, then I don't know what would you say about the physical and mental stress you've been giving me! Tsk Tsk. What a hypocrite you are….you can't see yourself in pain but enjoy when others suffer. Great! This just keeps getting better" she chuckled. Her sarcastic comments have eluded him. He could sense the fit of anger coming on but suddenly closed his eyes tightly to release it away. Meanwhile, Pratigya picked up the plates and finally slipped out of the room to escape from him.
*********
"Heyy", he called her standing outside the kitchen. She gave him an instant look and again busied herself in the work. In just a few strides, Krishna was standing right behind her.
"I wasn't done talking, Pratigya. Who said you could go …" he gritted his teeth as he spoke. But before she could muster up a good comeback as her reply, she felt his hand tightening around her wrist. Everything happened so fast that she didn't even realize she was being dragged by her hand until they both were standing outside.
**********
He drove madly through the streets, far beyond the speed limits. Pratigya was irritated and somewhat frozen with fear. She was scared that he may not do something that would hurt them both. "Where are we going?" she hesitantly asked. Krishna accelerated the car a bit more, making her body jerk towards the window.
The car eventually came to a halt infront of a deadly end. He abruptly got out and opened the door for her. "Since you have so much attitude to not give me a chance to explain, I had no other option but apply my force onto you to bring you here. Now, we can quietly talk without interruptions." he exclaimed.
Pratigya got out of the car and looked around to see the car was parked near a hill…she moved ahead to get a closer look— the hill was dreadfully deep. The bottom ground was almost invisible. She backed away as a sudden fear of height crawled upon her.
She felt something pull her back. It was Krishna. She looked a bit confuzzled. "Stay back…" he said lightly as he protectively held her arm.
************
They were leaning back on the deck of his car. A cold silence surrounded them. The air was filled with their confused and distorted feelings. Krishna exhaled loudly and moved a bit towards her.
"Can we talk?" he asked calmly. She gave a small nod of agreement.
"I have this habit of not hearing a "no" from anyone. I got everything I've wanted from childhood. I'm not the youngest in my family but I am treated with more love than any of the other siblings. Maybe I'm sort of ...spoiled" he shifted his gaze on the ground, surprised at his own words.
"When you rejected my feelings…I was not only crushed but this 'ego' of mine was also hurt badly. Getting angry was the only way I saw to let it all out. I didn't realize I was hurting you so badly in that process…" he glanced at her neck with guilt. Everything he said came out on its own, directly spurring from his heart.
He slowly approached her hand and held it for a moment, "I apologize for my rude behaviour. I am sorry" he said letting go of her hand.
Pratigya stared him without blinking…was she surprised? Ofcourse. None of this was ever expected… was this really the Krishna who mercilessly hurt her just a night ago?
"Do you actually mean all this? Are you really sorry?" she asked. His eyes only reflected honesty when she looked towards him. The same eyes where she had seen variations of anger until now were conveying quite an opposite emotion this time….she knew he wasn't pretending but she wanted him to assure her himself.
As if reading Pratigya's mind, Krishna gave her a small smile.
"I know you don't like me but I can't help being selfish here. I love you and I can't change it…look, its hard for me to live like this. I don't want to remain upset with you forever. It hurts me too, believe it or not. If you have come into terms with this marriage, then why can't you also accept the fact that I'm your husband? I am absolutely not demanding that you to follow my commands… but can we please cooperate with each other?" he searched for some sign of understanding on her confused face.
"Can we begin this again but with friendship this time? Atleast that will be better than anger and hatred towards each other…" Krishna held out his hand.
"Are you going to support me in this? It can't go your way or my way…but maybe we can make our lives go on a path where we both belong…" he waited for her answer patiently. He had said all he wanted to and now the decision was in her hands.
A perplexed Pratigya mutely gazed at his hand. Was this all for real?
After going through a trail of misunderstandings, they did get married at the end even if it was a forced one from his side. She agreed only because her family's respect and honour were at risk. Pratigya had quietly accepted whatever hurdles have come in her way…she had even compromised for this marriage. But she was shaken up by the bitter reality when she realized what she has got herself into. His family, house, lifestyle all were a world apart from her and his sudden aggressive behaviour just broke her apart the first day itself. The few days with him seemed like an eternity… was she still ready to give him a chance?
She brought her shaking hand hesitantly towards him, amusing herself more than him. There was no reason to not believe him or it was just that all the doubts she had just diminished into thin air. He wasn't asking her to love him back—something she couldn't imagine for now. It wasn't much he asked for…just her support.
Their eyes met as he held her hand ever so softly and led her to the car.
No promises were made but they were aware of the sincerity both of them had just committed with. Krishna gave her a big smile as he drove while a small one lingered on Pratigya's lips as she looked out of the window. The journey back home was relaxing and filled with new hopes for their lives. It was just the beginning….many more days like this were yet to come where they would realize the significance of each other in their lives and cherish the relationship with good memories.
