Dear Sirs, Madams, Mother, Sisters, Brothers, Grandfathers and Mentors of Dance India Dance
A] My request as an ordinary viewer
I am a very ordinary viewer, and frankly a novice when it comes to dance. The only dance I know of is the one done at parties (with sloshed friends or colleagues jumping to 'Summer of 69' or following the 'Macarena' or 'Kajrare' or 'Govinda' steps)
or at weddings (to songs like 'Didi Tera Devar" or 'Le Jayenge Dulhania' or the latest flavor of the season)
or with boyfriends (doing an idiotic and over the top take on 'Everytime you do that thing you do' or ' Unchained Melody' or 'Jahan Teri yeh nazar hai').
Therefore an ordinary, two left feet person like me, is bound to understand and appreciate dance what what it appears..........that is:
a) Pleasing to the eye
b) Looks fun or manageable
c) Filled with histronics, but does not border on a trapeze or a circus (Coz I like circuses only with genuine clowns and the animals, ........no pun intended!!)
d) Pure simple dance, without getting into over the top social messages on religion or traditional art forms that seem to be cashing in on one-upmanship and emotion, rather than any genuine effort or commitment to the social message, religion or traditional art form.
Is it that difficult to do.😳
I acknowledge that ordinary people like me are a minority in these times, but surely we matter too😳
b) Is the show about dance or about relationships?
I tune in to watch 'Dance' and not stories of surrogate mothers, brothers, would be romantic interests and "we are one family only"
Else lets close this competition and go join "Rishon ka safar" or perhaps "Apnon ki mehfil"
Please tone down the melodrama and talk about the dance instead.
I rather watch Jay with his forced cute antics, than hear paens of Ma, Bhai, Behen, Dada, Mama, Chacha, Guru, etc etc
c) Where is the sportsmanship Mentors
Yesterday 8 Boys or Men were belting out their guts to get a place on American Idol final 12. One of the contestants Aaron Kelly (16 years old) sang a song that had a deeply mature meaning. To which one of the hosts (Kara) commented that as Aaaron is a just a teen and young, he couldnt have felt the emotion attached to the song. Now......to this the other, and unarguably popular judge of American Idol, Simon, retorted .....on national US television...."Kara what you said it utter rubbish".
Kara not only took this critique by a fellow judge it in her stride, but in the last song she and Simon shared an emotional moment with Simon comforting her.
I am not advocating that international shows have the best of judges......What I am highlighting is that they have a great deal of grace, dignity and composure, whilst state their mind and views forthrightly.
Now, you guys are increasingly coming accross as grumpy kingdergarden tots who were denied a candy (Geeta, please note especially)
And it is no longer fun to watch.
So please, dear Sirs, Madams, Mother, Sisters, Brothers, Grandfathers and Mentors of Dance India Dance.
Please let me and ordinary viewers like me, enjoy this show for what it is "Dance India Dance"

I have always been a fan of your posts, Kasturi..[Recall the posts made by you on Perfect Bride forum]😃
I loved what you have written. I totally agree to each and every sentence you have written. Sportsmanship finds its place only in books and not in these shows, where everything that is said is always taken as an 'attack on ego'😕
I for one really enjoyed the dance that Parvez did in his tribute to Amitabh Bacchan, soft, simple and sweet. No unnecessary razmatazz and props😃 Occasionally, its fun to see such "powerful" prop-laded acts but when done in excess, it becomes toxic.
The 'Ma', 'Beta' stuff totally cloys and I hate that drama that comes with this show.Truly speaking, I can never understand how everyone calls Geeta as Ma..Including Jay and Soumya. A mentor-student relationship is unique and needs to be kept that way, IMO

Loved your post, Kasturi... I can understand your point... The Maa-Beta stuff was cute with Siddhesh last season, and they shared awesome mother-son chemistry.. But this season, I like it only with Binny and Geeta and all others dont fit into that act well... At times I try to think that they are calling her "Maa'm" and not Maa... 😉

@SAS - Actually I call my friends' mothers Maa... I share a unique bond with some of my friends' mothers and I love them as my own mother... They call me up regularly and see how I am doing and they all say that I am a daughter who wasnt born to them... My best friend always says her mom loves me more than her!! LOL.. It's something I dont know how to explain, and could be something just for me... But I agree with you that Ma-Beta/Beti relationship doesnt need to be there between a mentor and student... And Geeta isnt old enough to be their mother, na? Why dont they call her Di, like Teena did...

Sorry if my post came across as judgemental, Akku. Clearly, I was not able to explain. Iwill edit my post😃 I sometimes think that these students end up calling her Ma, not because they really feel like it, but because everyone else is.😕 Like even Mithun, Jay, Saumya call her that. A student-mentor relationship is unique and mostly professional. So its better to keep it that way, IMO. I dont know if I make sense..but I hope you got my point😳

Not at all, SAS, I understood what you were saying... 🤗 I told ya na, I agree with your post that mentor-student relationship shouldnt be made into such Maa-child ones... No need to edit your post! I was only responding to your part where anyone can call some others Maa than their own mother... 😃 I am kinda weird that way, I know, and my folks dont like me calling my friends' mothers Maa, but I dont care... LOL... I dont like it when Dada calls her that!! He is old enough to be her father or Dada, na? Both Remo and Terence dont call her that though... Jay and Saumya dont call her all the time, only when they say something in that aspect and they address her like that, like when asking comments about her team's performance...

Dear Jess, Sunandshine and akanna,
Thanks for the comments :))).
I wasnt sure how if came across as preachy, but I really am finding it difficult to appreciate the show because of all of the above.
I feel it is terribly unfair to other contestants that some contestants get more footage or praises (for matters that totally bereft from dance, eg good nature and heart!!), from mentors, grandmaster and the hosts.
Are the other contestants that useless? Then let us pack-up and decide the winner. now itself.
So that the gullible audience can save money and not spend it on texting messages or calling phone lines!!
As for the audience........including ermmmn....... the one on IF.....it is good to defend your favorites, but if one puts oneself in the contestants shoes, then its terrible...... that there some like Dharmesh (I refuse to call him Sir - not mine in any case), Bhavna, Kishore and Saajan who seem to have it all (no matter what they "Dont do").
One of the most watchable dancers that India has had is Mr Rishi Kapoor. Not that he was a great technical dancer. But he brought so much fun and personality and joy to it, that it was difficult not to like him.
Dharmesh, Kishore and Saajan bring nothing to the table in that respect. They are great dancers in their fields ....but peerless!!...I dont think so.... Unless of course one thinks that a crude pelvic thrust, a bobbing hairdo and a perpetually trying to walk on your head and shoulders stance .....all of this with dead pan expressions and emotionless eyes........is an great expression of dance and emotion!!
As for the Maa and bhai-behen interludes, then personally speaking, I have had great mentors too, though professionally. And I never left the need to call them Mom or Papa.
Those are endearments, which you reserve hopefully for only the two people who gave you birth or pehaps your in-laws or the genuinely close someone who indeed has been a father or mother figure to you .........throughout your life - not just for a show!!
As for "we are one family", I was amused that when the WC round was being telecast, some people in GKG said we are not 7 contestants but 1......I felt that was amusing hahaha. Then why participate??? Lets pack up and just send any 1 person from GKG to participate.
Truth be told, we take part in competitions to prove a point😳....to ourselves more than anyone else😳....that we can do something, achieve something. ....To trivialise this drive within us or our efforts and sugar coat it or emotionalise it, just to show great camaraderie is frankly not appreciated....at least by me.
I am not being cynical and crabby. Maybe all of GKG contestants are the virtues of sacrifice and jolly good people!
But then, more often than not, good virtues are "felt" not "repeatedly told"
sundandshine,
How are you :)))) Yes I do remember you. I follow your posts here too. Keep going friend :)))
And yes, Pervez was the one contestant I had liked:)) Not necessarily because he was a technically perfect dancer. But because he was good, could groove, was trying to improvise and importantly a pleasure to watch.
And beacuse he did it in a casual effortless manner than the panting, straining for emotions, eye-popping, convoluted terror struck expressions and smiling till the jaw cracks emotions displayed by quite a few others.

Doing a leg split about ten times and wearing minimal clothes in ones performance is certainly something great 😆 😳

Priyanka and Ajinkya
Thanks for responding. :))))))
Ajinkya,
I have no clue which contestant you are referring to as showing off skimpy clothes, because apart from Mr Grandmaster, Mentors and Jay everyone is showing off their skin and legs hahahahaha
But I guess you mean the Girl contestants over here (irrespective of whose team they are in??). Presuming each of the girls does one split per performance (we know they have not but still presuming they are doing it), that by itself does not make them frivolous or great.
And by no means cheap or trash just because they are wearing a short costume, or a revealing outfit.....as most of the girls seem to carry it with grace and dignity.
