Rahul Mahajan, 35, chose Dimpy Ganguly, 21, as his bride and theirs became the first wedding in India to be telecast live.
His predecessor on Swayamvar on NDTV Imagine, Rakhi Sawant, had shied away from marriage and settled for engagement, but Mahajan was quite keen from the beginning. "One day, I can tell my children or grandchildren how I married Dimpy," he said at a press conference Sunday afternoon.
The previous night, they had exchanged heart-shaped diamond rings, garlands and vows on the lavish set at Hotel Leela while millions watched from their homes. The wedding was attended by popular television actors, the families of all three finalists (Harpreet Chabra and Nikunj Malik besides Ganguly), Mahajan's mother Rekha, his fellow participants on Bigg Boss, and the channel team.
Nikhil Madhok, vice-president, marketing and communications, NDTV Imagine, says the third season is likely to have a cricketer looking for his life partner . "Weddings enjoy enormous interest in India. Even the TRPs of soap operas go up, when there is a marriage sequence. We have now implanted this success formula in a reality show," he says.
