Were you aware of your nomination for the Nandi Award in the best singer category?
No, it came as a very pleasant surprise. The song for which I won the award was the title track of a serial, Kalyani, telecasted on television.
How do you feel after winning the award?
It is one of the biggest achievements in life. I was surprised because there are so many serials in Gemini and ETV that have a high viewership, unlike Doordarshan. Not many people watch Doordarshan, in which the award winning song was telecast.
Since how long have you been singing professionally?
I have been learning music since I was 13. I learnt it from my mother who is also a very good singer. But unlike me, she never took it up professionally.

There are certain principles that I live by. I have sung for a number of albums and television serials. I have always believed that if you are good, work will beckon you and hence I never approached filmmakers or music composers for a break to sing in the film industry. And I still believe so. I am happy with what I have.
Would you pass on the same principles to your kids, Hemachandra and Himabindu, who are also pursuing the same career?
No. I sang for the love of it. And if my children want to make a career in singing, I would be the first one to ask them to approach relevant people in the industry and prove their talent. Today, the competition is very tough and one cannot wait for the opportunity to knock the door.
How supportive was your family?
There were times when I used to return home at 12 or one in the morning, and yet my husband would never make a hue and cry about it. My in-laws too have always supported my decision to sing.
