In all music reality shows we hear Judges saying and talking loud about versatility of a singer.
I feel this is just a gimmick to make an issue to bring a singer down. There are always double standards by Judges. When a contestent is doing well in his genre they simply criticise him by saying you cannot sing a song which is not in ur genre and when a contestent does not sing well they will say you choose a wrong song as it was not in you genre.
I dont think a singer can do well in all the genres but at least he can pull off a song in any genre in sur if he is a good singer.
I will give the example of the singer Javed Ali who has blockbluster hits like Guzarish and Jashne Bahara. He does very well in studio recording and has a very sweet voice but when it comes to live performance he falters. This doesnt mean that he is a bad singer.

At a professional level, recording in studios, one can always resort to enhancements, repairs and fills and all kinds of magic to make a product to sell CDs or bring hit music.

But on a reality show, where they are singing live(Gajji also does a lot of lip sync in so called reality for past few years), I think a 'good' singer should be able to demonstrate his/her capabilities in singing as much variety and as much range as possible. Since these days there are so many singers and competition, one has to be really good in many or atleast excellent in one category.
Well, good singing and bad singing are relative terms...so I cannot say anything about it.....
But I guess the reality show winners fame is really short lived even if they win a contest are not good enough....ex:Sandeep? the guy who won over Karunya, Fame Gurukul winners etc...they cannot be seen or heard anywhere inspite of such strong communicating media. Consistency will win and probably people like Gajji who will make shows out of reality show winners so that they both benefit ;-)
Honestly I think it is an overdose.....esp wrt singing on TV....

A good singer must be able to sing in sur songs in a studio and in front of an audience... venue doesn't decide a good singer but his or her abilities... i don't think a singer is required to be versatile (good if he or she is) but sometimes some singers have very genre specific voice... like Kailash Kher, he has a very folk feel to his voice and though he is a good signer, his voice may not feel good for all kinds of songs...but his ability as a good singer remains...

The reality show producers make the singers look very great during the show but finally most of them end up doing stage shows or singing in marraiges like Sandeep Acharya and Emon Chatterjee and many more.
By raising the question of versatility in the show the producers makes viewers and us to discuss and we here on forums arugue and fight whether Raja can sing that song or Harshit can sing that song or Anwesha cannot peform on fast songs and Aishwarya cannot sing a classical song and so on.

Exactly thats my point that a good singer must be able to sing in sur may be his voice doesnt suit the song he should pull off any song in studio and in front of the audience.

Raghuraj, all this stress on nonsensical things by the judges is just a way to hide and do things their way... Sur had always been and should always be the most important thing in a song... when taking singing lessons, the teacher doesn't tell us beta focus on the atmosphere, sing with josh....he strictly points the flaws in the sur and tells to improve upon.... In MKMM the judges points such mistakes so as to cut marks... golmaal hai bhai sab golmaal hai...

I have seen many Judges and guests say after a performance that you have sung better then the original and I will surely be lucky to record with you but after the show they forget what they said. It is just the script for the show.
I always watch reality shows minus Judge comments,Guests comments and dramas. I beleive on my ears to judge who sung well and who did what mistake in the song and it is very easy to do once you hear both the original and the performance.

^ Exaclty....Me too...just rely on your ears... it knows what is melody and what is not..Judges nowadays are there to misjudge and not judge..they create scenes, try to put a deserving contestants down...its like a mere puppet in the hands of the producer... shame..

its a known secret, that all such shows are scripted.
I am worried at the way everything is going scripted and more so being justified in the name of 'entertainment'!! I so want the old saregama back...sur round(no instrument support), other language round, taal change round etc....and the judges those days!!!

One more thing I will like to add that the show producers have been successful in bringing a regional and communal divide among the music lovers.
There are fans who become fanatics at times to support a singer from their region or community even if he/she is not so good singer.
