It is true that Abhi could have taken a rain check on the promise, but that would negate the point that Nukul and Simi are going to be married very soon.
yes, thats exactly the thing - Simi will not speak up and if Abhi doesn't act then nobody can save their relation and Simi would have to marry to Nakul and in addition, it was Simi who calls him up crying and asks him to take her away from this home.
This chance was the "golden" chance bcos even if Abhi & Simi think that RS would not agree to a older girl, younger guy relationship, the true-to-his-words person that RS is, he would not have any other way but to accept their relation.
