I'll add my thoughts to the number of analyses that have already
appeared here, along with my observations on the singers. I'll try to focus
on the singing, with respect to sur, voice quality, execution and emoting.

Hemu sang Dil diya hai and ARR's Vande Mataram

He was clearly off tonite. He seemed very tense on the first song (he was
the first singer up), and it showed in the performance. He didn't make any
major mistakes on sur, but his voice quality was definitely affected by the
tension and he was able to project a lot less power and resonance in his
voice than he is capable of. Also, the verse that he forgot to sing
definitely affected the feel of the song.

My ratings for Hemu Dil diya hai
Sur: 7.5
Voice Quality: 5.5
Execution: 4 (he forget an entire verse)
Emoting: 5

Degree of difficulty of song: 3 (out of 5)

Although his Vande Mataram was good, it was clearly not upto his
potential, and the sur was less than pakka on a few occasions., especially
on the low notes eg those at the beginning of the song He also seemed
to strain a bit on the high notes. I hope he won't get into that habit: it
won't do his voice any good long-term.However, his voice quality was
definitely a bit better in this song - he projected a lot more powerm
especially on the higher notes. Still, I think he needs to relax more while
singing. It will improve the resonance in his voice. Interestingly, he
seemed to falter on the simpler parts of the song, but executed his
harkats extremely well. Arijit on FG performed this song better, IMO.
Although I prefer Hema's bass voice personally.

My marks for Hemu Vande Mataram
Sur: 8.5
Voice Quality: 7
Execution: 8.5
Emoting: 8

Degree of difficulty of song: 4.5 (out of 5)

Debojit is a very interesting singer. I would put him down as one of the
steady climbers on this show as far as execution goes. He is also one
singer who appears to be stretching himself - trying different kinds of
relatively difficult songs, which on one hand tend to highlight his
weaknesses, but also allow him to demonstrate his finesse. Another
factor that is showing in his singing is his ease on stage. Tension kumar
seems to be more at ease now when the bright lights shine and the music
plays. His voice has great resonance, and he able to maintain power over
the entire scale. I think he is the contestant who has worked the most on
himself during the course of this contest. His two songs were Ae mere
pyaare watan and Suno ghaur se duniya walon. His first performance was
excellent. There were a few minor occasions of flat pitch as far as sur
goes, but I could catch no major mistakes. Voice qualtiy - he is able to
project both softness and power in his voice, which I find very pleasing.
The integrity of his voice is excellent - his earlier troubles in bridging
between low and high notes is not evident today.
Occasionally, he loses power, especially towards the end of a verse - he
seems a bit Kumar-Sanu-ish 😕 , but this was very less evident in this
song. His execution was very good, but his emoting was excellent. I think
this is definitely his strong point.

My marks for Debu Ae Mere Pyaare Watan

Sur - 9
Voice Quality - 7
Execution - 9
Emoting - 9

Degree of difficulty of song 4 (out of 5)

Debo started his second song off well, but on the second verse, he made
a mistake - it wasn't that he went off sur per se, but he started singing
the refrain 'suno gaur se...' instead of the second verse. He quickly
switched back, but it gave the appearance that he had gone off key. After
the mistake, his voice quality became a little restrained, and I don't think
he was able to give the best to expression either. This is such a free-
flowing, fast song that you have to be unrestrained to do it full justice.
For me, this takes a lot away from Debo's singing, as I feel his emoting
and voice quality are his special strengths

My marks for Debo's Suno Gaur Se...

Sur - 8
Voice Quality - 6
Execution - 5
Emoting - 6

Degree of difficulty of song - 4.8

Vinit has a very interesting voice - He has a smooth Rafi-esque timbre to
his voice. However, it is very raw and untrained. Vinit sang two very
popular songs - the Madan Mohan classic from Haqeeqat - Kar chale hum
fida.. and Zindagi Maut na banjaaye - both (no surprise) Rafi songs.

Vinit has some definite problems in projecting his voice, especially
initially, as was evident when he started his first song. He also has major
problems bridging between low and high keys. Not only does his sur slip
badly on these occassions, as others have pointed out, but also, I think
there is a hint of double-voice. This is what I saw in the first two verses of
his Kar chale... He sings mostly in middle voice and head voice. But in Kar
chale, at the beginning, he sang in middle voice and when the notes went
higher (at fida..) he switched over to head voice. What he should have
done is sing the whole thing in middle or head voice. Interestingly, he did
do that when he repeated the line. I think this is a sign of needing a lot
more practice. BTW, I can't think of a time when he has used his chest
voice. As a result, there is not much power in most of his singing, and I
suspect he may not fare all that well on the low notes or on difficult songs
that cover a wide range of pitches. He did emote fairly well - this is one
of the areas he has definitely improved - but again is somewhat
short on finesse. It makes it worse that he picks Rafi songs - you can't
help but compare him to Rafi, who could make you cry... and not for the
wrong reasons ;) )

Marks for Vinit's Kar Chale hum fida

Sur - 7.5
Voice Quality - 5
Execution - 7 (no major mistakes, but no great improvisations either)
Emoting - 5.5 (I'm being generous, when PC said you put the soul into
this song, my dad who was watching with me cracked : he has put a hole
into this song! 😆)

Degree of difficulty of song 4

Next, Vinit sang Zindagi Maut na banjaye - again a great song. However,
Vinit slipped on sur no less than 6 times on this song. I am not talking
about a little flatness here and there. These were noticeable. Again, there
was not a lot of great improvisation, although he did execute the short
alaaps in the song without noticeable mistakes. This time, his voice quality
was better. Maybe, he's a bit more warmed up having sung the first song.
His voice maintained integrity quite well throughout the pitch changes,
and he was able to project a bit better on the higher notes, but
unfortunately, he hasn't developed finesse, so it sounds like shouting.

Marks for Vinit's ZMNB
Sur - 6.5
Voice Quality - 5.5
Execution - 6.5
Emoting - 6

Degree of difficulty of song 3.5

In case anyone thinks I'm being harsh, I think Vinit has tremendous
potential. But he needs to take singing lessons to fulfil it.

In fact all the three contestants need to train a lot more to become
'greats'. I just worry that these 17 yr olds are going to hear so much
insane adulation that they're going to think they have nothing more to
learn. I think that would do more damage to a Hema or Vinit or Debo than
losing this contest.

As far as the best performance of the night, it has to go to Nihira's Ae
mere watan ke logon. It brought tears to my eyes. She has opened up a
lot over the course of this show, and her emoting is now on par with her
perfect sur and execution. Seeing her, one feels the future of the music
industry is safe. Although it remains to be seen if there will be composers
in Bollywood who can write songs worthy of such talent.

Good analysis. The one thing I would like to mention here is though I am a Deboo Fan but I always enjoy Hema's singing & his sincerity. But in this particular episode he is really looking tired & looks very much depressed. I really felt bad for him. I think due to that walk out drama & his mother's insult he is not feeling comfortable. He looks very innocent guy. I know Hema is already out of the show (though we get to see the show after one whole week than it telecasted in India) but my best wishes with him. He will definitely become a successful singer. God bless you.....

Thanks, compu. I think this whole drama thing - not to mention the etiquette lessons, the stage shows, the mentor fights and the regional baiting- all of this nonsense drama has really taken away from the quality of the show. It's made that place not fun for everybody. Singers can't perform their best in such an atmosphere. Meantime these teenage kids aren't even able to just have fun. It's gonna impair their creative abilities. I'm quite sure.

qwerty-ji - what does keeping on sur have to do with personal preferences??

If you think that suno guar se is an *easy* song, I have to wonder what you
know about singing... In the refrain of that song, you have to keep your
breath for 21/2 bars to be able to sing it! Please try it in your (preferably
sound-proof) shower and report back to me!!

If Vinit sings well for a 17 year old, Hema sings better - and so does Debo.
You don't have to make age an excuse for Hema's singing. That night may
have belonged to Debo by a slim margin, but point is Hema & Debo are
easily on par with each other. Vinit is not.

Regards.
