Will Mona Singh Leave 'Jassi...' In May?
[Interview by Subhash K. Jha]
Monday, March 28, 2005

Ok this is an old article dated in 2005, but chk it out guys, it says tat mona's contract expires in 2005 itself...
Jassi of the frumpy clothes, oversized glasses and braces has finally transformed into a svelte, well-groomed woman sporting a trendy hairstyle and wardrobe and ready to take on the world.

For more than a year Jassi, the working-class icon in the popular soap "Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin", was the intelligent but plain looking girl who was made fun of and manipulated by her boss at the fashion house where she worked.

But now Jassi has undergone a dramatic transformation. On the much-awaited makeover, Mona, who portrays Jassi, said it was required to move the story forward.

Jassi''s personal and professional life had reached a "dead end" and she needed to feel good about herself, said Mona, just back from a long makeover innings for Jassi in Mauritius.

Jassi''s new image, created by leading stylists Queenie Dhody and Seema Khan, was in keeping with the growth of her character, Mona said. She expressed confidence that viewers would accept Jassi''s new look.

Mona''s contract with Sony expires in May. Asked what she intended to do after that, Mona said she would continue to act and would never quit television. She told IANS in an interview that she had some offers from Bollywood but was not excited about them.

Excerpts from the interview:
What would you say about the dramatic transformation?

Not so dramatic, really, she laughs pleasantly. I've been sleeping peacefully with my braces and glasses for more than a year. And I don't think I am tired of them. The makeover isn't ultra-glamorous or anything. It isn't as if I'll now go around sporting a chic attitude. Right now the fringed hairstyle is out. I've just had a terrific haircut. So it's goodbye to Sadhana (the actress who patented the fringe hairstyle).

But why the need for the makeover?

If you notice, Jassi had reached a dead-end in life. Her love life was in a mess. Her feelings for her boss Armaan had been crushed. My character had more-or-less overdosed on self-annihilation and needed to feel whole and healed. That's why the rejuvenating trip to Mauritius with Neena Gupta. That's why the new look. Jassi's friend Purab (Samir Soni) is going to play a big hand in her makeover.

Why this radical shift in the soap's policy that inner beauty is all-important?

It's true we're now looking at both inner and outer beauty. But I don't think that will affect the popularity of the show. My fans are as excited about my change as I am. I think the TRPs are going to go up even more.

Why the need to make a spectacle of herself?

Because that's how I look in real life, the actress insists. She also insists that the model in the Asian Paints ad is not her...and bursts into peals of laughter.

Seriously I'm very excited about my new look. Leading stylists like Queenie Dhody and Seema Khan are working on my appearance. The character hasn't changed at all. But it was very important for Jassi to gather self-confidence,not to let people take her for granted and to look like the female entrepreneur that she is. For that she needed to look more presentable.

So is this radical shift in the soap's attitude to physical beauty?

No. We never meant to say that physical beauty wasn't important. One has to have respect for oneself. And looking presentable is part of that. But it isn't as if Jassi is going to be one of those glamorous unattainable chicks. Then she'll end up like the characters Mallika and Pari on the show.

"Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin" has been on for nearly a year and a half. Mona's contract expires in May 2005.😆

Itz 2006 now, 2005 may is gone mona😆, waz goin on 😳😳😳

May be itz just another thing, for all u know jassi might go on for another yr or so 😉 n then we will have the 2006 article as a proof👏

What next?

I haven't thought about it. I haven't had the time. I guess I'll take a long break in May. It's been a really hectic time for me - no time for anything except work. But I asked for it. This is the time for me to build on my career. Shez told the same thing exactly after one yr to mumbai mirror, hee heee 😆

No plans for another soap?

I want to do a soap as different and pioneering as Jassi. I'm getting a lot of film offers. But they haven't been worth considering seriously. I'll consider a new soap and may be film offers after my contract with Sony expires in May. I'll start planning soon. But one thing is for sure. I'll never quit TV. The home medium has turned me into a household name. In cinema you're forgotten after three hours. Ok same dialogue, c'mon mona waz this, dont give the same xcuse everytime 😃 ure disappointing all ur fans by sayin u will be off air, we at IF are havin a tough time cryin abt jassi goin off air 😭, n we missing all the discussions here 😭😭😭

But will viewers accept her as another character?

I don't want them to forget me as Jassi even when I stop doing the role. I've done so many different things within this one role. I couldn't have hoped for a better chance to prove my talent.

So, Mona plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz tell us the truth, is Jassi really going off air...I hope we dont hear the same stuff in 2007 😉

(yeah..so she was actually ready then for the twists and turns...and dont tell me that she didnt know that they story was gonna be dragged)

Not so dramatic, really, she laughs pleasantly. I've been sleeping peacefully with my braces and glasses for more than a year(well, so she was peaceful...it was not a turture...but now she says thst it was a torture.....whay hypocrisy...👏👏😡.....). And I don't think I am tired of them.(whoa......what hyposrisy) The makeover isn't ultra-glamorous or anything. It isn't as if I'll now go around sporting a chic attitude. Because that's how I look in real life, the actress insists. She also insists that the model in the Asian Paints ad is not her...and bursts into peals of laughter.(hehehehehe.i burst into peels of laughter now.....what great noble thoughts👏👏.....all was a farce...everything was a dhokha...how i wish these stars are upfront and talk what they they really feel..)

(oh yeah.....that's not true.....the movie starst are BIGGER nd more famous and more popular THAN THE telly stars....no one forgets them.....and i have not forgotton raj of ddlj even today.......please, why does she have to say somethign last year and say somethign totally different this yeat...)

But will viewers accept her as another character?

I don't want them to forget me as Jassi even when I stop doing the role.(but you want to be called moan only...as mona is not jassi and jassi is not moan..didnt you say that to the mumbai mirror reporter......hypocrisy...) I've done so many different things within this one role. I couldn't have hoped for a better chance to prove my talent.

well the show was origianlly supposed to end in may remember just like blf but then they got the extension and so the story went fora toss and her contract got extended.

"I don't want them to forget me as Jassi even when I stop doing the role"

thats what she says al along that she wants to be remmebered as jassi in jjkn ,she has always been grateful for being jassi and its just that as an actress creatively she may be bored and tired ,thats what she meant

K-serials heroines may have the same issues but they wouldnt have come out and even if they have been working for so many years without complaining that doesnt make them right and justified.Mona from all her interviews is sure very passionate abt jassi and JJKN and it always shows her love for JJKN and whats wrong with wanting theshow to end with grace.Ultimately it has to end one day.

she is very fond of jjkn tht when the plot was going haywire she objected to it and put her foot down, not unlike others who nod their heads and do whatever is asked from them. That shows that they arent very passionate with the work they are doing and it doesnr matter to them

anyway i would still side mona on this and i agree that the hsow should end with grace (whenever that is )

ya tina, yaar she says once that she wants to be called jassi...and then she says that dont call me that....what to believe😕

and what's her problem with the plot now??its nice.........and she had a problem only with the naini track...not with the pms.....if jjkn was her love, she wouldnt have agreed for the pms....jassi stooped down....she was a national icon....if mona is so attached, she must object to everything.......khush said that maybe she would have even objected then but maybe the makers didnt agree....ok, if that was the case, why didnt she answer to wakas' Q about the pms......she just went....ughhhhhh...wellllllll...

and mona's such comments is a down market for the show.....its yet on air and these just piss the viewers off...everyone knows how much sheena and me defended the show...now isnt it natural that we get annoyed when mona talks like this....she knew that if the story goes on, it will be dragged.....and if mona was so passionate, she shouldnt have agreed to sleep with a married man, come what may.......if that was the case, i would have glorified moan......

and what's more annoying is that (ok, someone posted a video where mona went to michigan for a show..and she says this there) she says that she is not at all tired with the braces....she likes it that way.....and now when the show is on its last leg, she says that even then i considered it to be a torture and wanted to get rid of all the paraphernalia.........
what's the most disappointing is that she says something last year and something totally different now.....

everyone wants jjkn to end with grace but what is the need to say that in every interview...and mind it, she said that "ITS DISHEARTENING THAT JJKN IS NOT ENDING"...dammit, if she's so tired, let her quit...many watch the show for apoorva...and we'll(me, many of my classmates, my ex-class mates monali, hena, , sheena, etc etc) continue to watch it....and mona could not carry off the naini track so beautifully as she carries off the janda tracks........and jassi is a dream role.......the role of jassi has so much variety and scope...unlike the K soaps.....and even parmeet and RK kept their displeasure to themselves and did not talk ill abotut he show...they silently quit....

Yea I totally agree with buffie here, 2 months bk she gave an interview saying "It was a Torture to be Jassi" and then few days after that, she says I thoroughly enjoyed the fame I attained being jassi and yesterday she says, she wants to quit and she herself agrees that she will not find another soap like jassi which would get her so much stardom. But if u look at her last yr interviews itz totally FOR jassi, such statements would really upset the viewers, coz there are so many who want to be like her, who want to become successful, though it is FICTION, but ppl have dreamt abt being like JASSI, if she spks such loose statements all her FANS will not only get disappointed, but will start disliking her.

Anywayz...I found this article n was shocked to read her comments, hence posted it 😃
