The reason why Kareena Kapoor's films flop

December 1, 2009 |10:11 | Celebrities | Gossips By : Team X

A year ago this question would never have made it to any Bollywood producer's thought process, but the time has come to think about it - just how bankable is Kareena Kapoor?

Like Akshay Kumar, Kareena has doled out flop after flop from mid 2007 all the way to the end of 2009. Sample these films - Tashan, Golmaal Returns, Kambakkht Ishq, Mai aur Mrs Khanna, Kurbaan - they all bombed at the box office.

Some might say Golmaal and KIshq made decent money, but what about the ROI? Making the money back doesn't mean the film is a hit, it simply means it flopped.

What's more, the films where she 'guest appeared' in, 'Halla Bol', 'Luck by Chance' and 'Billu' all nosedived as well. To add to it, no one even watched 'Roadside Romeo', the animated film that she provided her voice for.

So what is going wrong? Are these bad films? To some extent, yes. 'Golmaal 2' and 'KIshq' were atrocious, one would have to be a lunatic to assume those would be hits with today's sophisticated junta. 'Mai aur Mrs Khanna' was terrible as well, with its flimsy script and half-baked premise. But what about the 'Saifeena' moniker?

Bollywood promotes the Saif-Kareena jodi like its the best thing since sliced bread. Remember the vomitous 'Tashan'? That film was made to only cash in on the new buzz of the 'hot' Saif-Kareena jodi. 'Roadside Romeo' had the duo for the same reason. The same goes for the recent dud 'Kurbaan'.

And what happened? It turns out only a few people are interested in watching 'Saifeena' on screen, the rest need a decent entertainment product for the hundreds of Rupees they pay for at multiplexes. 'Tashan' was unwatchable, and 'Romeo' was underwhelming.

'Kurbaan' was not so bad, but it was shoddy and had too many plotholes to make for a serious drama pitched in as a film with a lot of attention to detail. Even the excellent soundtrack of 'Kurbaan' couldn't pull in audiences. Is marketing to blame here? Hell no! 'Saifeena' films are given humongous promotions.

'Tashan' posters were everywhere, and you can't possibly forget the bare-back poster from 'Kurbaan' which made its way to every nook and corner of the country. The MNS even helped with the film's promotion by creating a big fuss over the alleged 'nudity' in it. Remember the bikini scene in 'Tashan'? Did it help sell tickets? Not by a long shot.

End result? These films were just not good enough. 'Jab we met' was extremely entertaining, will '3 Idiots' follow suit? Or will it bomb due to the Kareena curse? In any case we can expect 'Saifeena' on Twitter anytime soon; Priyanka Chopra began Tweeting to promote 'Kaminey'; Shahid, Genelia and director Ken Ghosh recently became Tweet-happy (hint: Chance pe Dance)

In my view, the audiences prefer fresh faces! Kareena is growing older and there are a whole lot of young new girls raring to kick-start their careers in the industry and they cater to the youth.

I dont quite agree wiht this article. And that's because it seems biased. Biased in the sense that even the FACTS are incorrect.
LIke the fact that it says GR was a flop.
On the contrary Golmaal Returns was a SUPER HIT.
What does this even mean?
"Making the money back doesn't mean the film is a hit, it simply means it flopped."
I thought flops and hits WERE dependent on making hte money back, lmao
Also, why are they puting movies like LBC and Halla Bol on kareena's head? lol
And she just provided her voice for Roadside ROmeo, haha. See what i mean by biased article?
When talking about promotions
"'Tashan' posters were everywhere"
Are you seroius? tashan's promotions SUCKED! Infact I was watching a saif interview where the reporter mentioned to him that a member from the production house of Yash Raj told them, "We dont need to promote Tashan. You reporters are doign it for us by talking about saif and kareena"
WHat kidna promotion is htat? lol
Some of my friends didnt even know what tashan was a week before its release, coz htey woudl only play two promos, and thsoe too 30 second versions. No one knew what tashan was about, not even us fans, lol
All in all, I can come up with a better article to summarize bebo's career graph and her movies and their successes 😛

I notice that in India they give a lot of definitions to flop - according to me a flop is a movie which doesn't recover its initial budget...But for some indian viewers, a flop is an unworthy movie to watch...
Yeah y're right Desu - Golmaal return is a hit as far as I know.

Your definition is hte one that i'm aware of as well. Which is why I was emphasizing the luck factor as well. 😊

Yes, the article does seem biased, but overall, it is not that wrong. People do not want to see the Saifeena jodi, they want to see a good movie. Even in Kurbaan, the main focus was their jodi and their chemistry. The constant hype around their relationship does them no good, except keeping them in the news.
I hope she makes better choices in future.
I agree with sonam_s though, that people are more interested in seeing fresher jodis. They are much more exciting.

I woudl disagree to the extend that its not like ppl DONT wanna see saifeena. But at the same time, why should they come to a movie JUST for saifeena? Saif and kareena arent srk and kajol that you flaunt the two together and ppl will run coming in.
And the intimacy that dharma flaunted in the promos just backfired miserably. And not just that, it frustrated both saif and kareena as well. All anyone wanted to ask was about the intimate scenes. ANd both of them woudl keep saying, they're not a big deal, kurbaan is so much more.
Recently Johar gave an interview sayign that he will stand by Rensil even in the future because the product was good but HE LEARNED FROM A FEW MISTAKES.
Lets hope he doesnt repeat them in teh future, but it came at the cost of a pretty good movie
