So well put ramas! Society is going to be a big obstacle in their case - i think more than the parents. Parents, because they love their children - do finally accept what they think is going to lead to their children's happiness. Society also accepts - if say their relationship weathers the test of time. However, till that point - society can be unbearable.
I was surprised, angry, and disheartened - when they showed that after Rajiv's baraat was returned - and not one person the next day (aside from her father + Abhi) had a single positive thing to say to her. Whether they were the neighbors, the general public, the educated teachers - everyone had something negative to say. I would have expected Simi to get a standing ovation from students - but nothing like that. So imagine what would happen if Abhi and Simi decided they loved each other and decided to marry - society around them would go into overdrive given the fact that Abhi's age could v.well be that of one of her students - since she's a lecturer at a college. Simi specially would have to hear some v.painful things from people around her!!
