If the little birdies from Bollywood are right, we would soon be seeing our very own Irrfan Khan playing Jawaharlal Nehru. The Filmfare Award winner Slumdog Millionaire star has been approached to play the part of India's first Prime Minister in a venture by Universal Pictures and Working Title Films, titled Indian Summer.
The film will also star Hollywood hotties Cate Blanchett and Hugh Grant. Oscar winner Blanchett would reportedly play the role of Nehru's lady love, Lady Edwina Mountbatten, while Grant would play the last British Viceroy in India, Lord Louis Mountbatten.
As per reports, Indian Summer has the Government of India all worked up over the depiction of Nehru and Lady Mountbatten's affair. Government officials have been reported to have studied the script thoroughly and have asked for the removal of some intimate scenes between Nehru and Edwina. What's more, the makers of the film have been asked to state that it is a work of fiction. Officials from the Government would supervise the shooting, and the makers have been asked to get approval before its release. Any changes in the script would also require pre-approval.
Hollywood has been appreciated for wanting to show India's history on the big screen, but many are skeptical that the makers might just 're-imagine India's history just for mercantile greed' and not give an authentic presentation of the historical events.
Atonement director and BAFTA winner Joe Wright is directing the film, while it will be written by Oscar nominee William Nicholson, of the Gladiator fame. The film is based on the book Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End of an Empire by Alex von Tunzelmann. It intends to portray the last leg of the British rule in India, representing the important events of the country's independence. Mountbatten's handing over the charge of India to Nehru in the summer of 1947 is believed to be a major event depicted in the film.
Filming for Indian Summer is expected to begin in early 2010, and it will be shot chiefly in Delhi, Punjab and Jammu-Kashmir, among other parts of India. The makers are aiming at a release in 2011. We are so looking forward to it!
